The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany and conveys the country's multifacetedness to the world. Founded in 1951, the Goethe-Institut provides access to German language, culture and society, and promotes international cultural cooperation and exchange. It sets internationally recognized standards in the teaching and learning of German as a foreign language, offers language courses, compiles teaching materials, trains teachers, contributes to scientific research, and participates in political language initiatives. In the US, it strives to awaken interest in students to learn the German language. In support for teaching of German within the American educational system, the Goethe-Institut works in close collaboration with many professional organizations, especially the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), and advocates for greater general knowledge about German culture, geography and language.
