    3 deer species originally from the Asia region are less knowen in New Zealand and situated in the North Island of New Zealand. Jim Gibson has access to his own private land areas to hunt that offer hunters a much differant deer hunt than that of the South Island. Typically 3x3-4x4 in antlers formation the ideal time to hunt them is from May due to the Sambar & Rusa not going into hard antler until then. These deer can be all hunted wild and free ranging in low fence/ no fence areas. Jim personally guides a limited amount of hunters every year for these deer that offer a real challenge. The Sambar deer being the largest of the deer species that are slightly smaller than a bull Elk these deer tend to live in thick native vegetaion which requires glassing and patience. Rusa which are also very dense in body weight will often weigh more than a Red Stag, the meat is considered highly prized with those that have tried. Sika are very similar to Red Stag but often half the size they are similar in nature to that of a Whitetail. These deer can be hunted as a combination of individually according to the hunters preferance. Hunting the North Island can be part of your South Island adventure also or seperatly.

  • A package for 5 days including 1 hunter & 1 non hunter (non hunter may also take trophies if interested) with a differance hunting with a trophy Bull Elk,  Fallow Buck but also some huge old trophies like the Arapawa Ram and Alpine goat. Hunt takes in both open rolling hills to native forest over looking the ocean.   • Tahr hunting is what New Zealand Safaris has built our reputation on. Our tahr hunts are conducted on wild, free range, private wilderness area land, where we are foot hunting, not using helicopters.  All of these private wilderness areas are leased long-term and are exclusive to New Zealand Safaris ranging from 15000-45000 acres of mountain. Our properties get you right in the heart of where the first tahr herds were liberated and thrive today. On these properties you'll find the highest tahr population numbers in the central South Island.

    These properties have excellent mountain roads which allows us to cater to all levels of hunters. From glaciers to river valleys non-hunters have an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and watch the game.

    Our properties are all within 40 minutes of our hunting lodge, or we can camp out in the back country cabins on the properties.

  • A White Stag (or white hind for the female) is a white-colored red deer, explained by a condition known as leucism that causes its hair and skin to lose its natural colour. The white has played a prominent role in many cultures' mythology.  The white has played a prominent role in many cultures' mythology. Hunters of old pursued the miraculous stag, not because they expected to kill it, but because it led them in the joy of the chase to new and fresh adventures, and so to capture happiness. Jim Gibson owner of New Zealand Safaris has been managing one of his properties to now have one of the most talked about white deer populations in the world. The Stags on this property like many tend to have dark antlers with white tips making an amazing contrasts in color. Our first White Stag ever harvested was aged at an amazing 12 years old by one of our Texas clients, which is testiment to managing our game and one of our principles of only taking old mature animals.

    • This package includes 2 days fly fishing on some of the most iconic streams in in the south Island for big rainbow & Browns, 2 days big game hunting for a trophy Red Stag up to 360 inches of antler (maybe upgraded on the day and hunt extended) based out of or full time lodge. These dates fit perfectly with with the best time to fly fish and hunt Red Stag during our late summer months. This package can be taken between February 2023- August 2024. Wild Red Stags range from 5x5-7-7 on average, in typical 70% open hill country with shots out to 350 yards at times. In the native timber Stag average 8x8-10x10 with dark antlers with shots between 50-250 yards.

    For those mountain hunters a pure wild hunt, on foot these are extensive mountain properties. New Zealand Safaris prides itself on the quality of these areas privately owned hunting areas unmatched in the industry and right on our door step....

    This is what New Zealand Safaris has built our reputation on for mountain hunts.  Hunts are conducted on wild, free range, private wilderness area land, where we are foot hunting with access using 4x4/side by side from the lodge or comfortable cabins if required.  All of these private wilderness areas are leased long-term and are exclusive to New Zealand Safaris with no helicopters used in these areas at all, hunting pressure is very low taking limited numbers off each property with exceptional old trophy animals that vary from 15000-45000 acreas of mountain areas. As working sheep and cattle ranches live stock are brought down to the lower country in the winter months leaving the wild aniamls to themselves, with the tracks that cut through these areas we are able to glass valleys for trophy potential. All these properties are low fence/ no fence in the hunting area and between 15mins -1.5 hrs from the lodge drive.

    Jim Gibson is offering a hunt very few have ever seen, nor hunted. A unique hunt for those that like different. These White Stags with dark antlers are as impressive as any deer you will see, with New Zealand Safaris....

    • Hunt something different with a great opportunity to go after a pure White Stag. A gene we have in some of our females (hinds) throws out the gene of a White Red Stag (not albino) and produces a very impressive looking deer. These Stags mature around 6 years old and hunting them in our native timber area they get very dark antlers with white tips like most of our stags. Each year we have 3-4 White Stags that we can hunt with many of our clients commenting on how they would love to come back on a second trip for one. With limited numbers this is an experience very few will be able to say they have hanging on their wall.
