Lithoz Brings Ceramics Additive Manufacturing Expertise to the America Makes Partnership
TROY, NY - September 8, 2021 – Lithoz America has joined America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute. Lithoz is deeply rooted in ceramics engineering and will bring their unique expertise to help America Makes members adopt ceramics additive manufacturing.
Before 3D printing, ceramic parts were challenging to manufacture, especially for complex geometries, low volume production, or designs that changed frequently. Additive manufacturing lowers barriers to innovation and shortens supply chains by allowing product development and serial production to be done in-house. “Companies familiar with polymer and metal AM will find that 3D printing makes ceramics manufacturing much easier than they would imagine” said Shawn Allan, Vice President at Lithoz America. “We can help America Makes members gain the competitive advantages that come with having in-house ceramics expertise.”
Advanced ceramic materials offer better performance in extreme environments than plastics or metals -- a ceramic nozzle delivering abrasive media will provide a much longer service life than a metal nozzle, for example. Ceramics offer excellent dimensional stability, wear resistance, and electrical insulation, as well as the ability to withstand extremes of heat, pressure, and harsh chemicals. Since ceramics are often employed when other materials fail, Lithoz 3D printers are purpose-built to match or exceed the material properties of conventionally manufactured ceramic parts, and provide the precision, surface quality, and final part density needed for end-use in industrial and scientific applications.
Lithoz CeraFab 3D printers are Digital Light Processing (DLP) systems that yield high resolution parts with economical material usage. Lithoz offers a wide variety of standard technical ceramics including alumina, zirconia, silicon nitride, and silica-based materials, for applications including structural parts, insulators, static mixers, catalyst supports, and casting-cores. Lithoz’ open material platform allows users to develop their own resin/powder material systems, and the new CeraFab Multi 2M30 printer provides researchers the capability to develop ceramic/ceramic, ceramic/metal, and ceramic/polymer multi-material systems, as well as functionally graded ceramic materials.
