Fairbanks, Alaska, is called the Golden Heart City of Alaska, located in the East Central Interior of Alaska 360 miles north of Anchorage and 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The city lies on the 800 mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline constructed in the 1970s. The city is the seat of the University of Alaska, founded in 1917. Fairbanks is home to many unique sporting events such as the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race, and the 800 mile Yukon River Marathon to name a few. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District operates 35 schools for over 12,000 students in Fairbanks, North Pole, Two Rivers, and Salcha, including two military installations, Ft. Wainwright Army Post and Eielson Air Force Base. Schools range in size from a small, rural elementary school of fewer than 100 students to comprehensive high schools with 1,100 students, and various charter, magnet, and specialized schools.
