A Day At The Theater

Join your performing arts friends at the Herberger Theater Center, as IAVM presents ‘A Day at the Theater’. The day will include the following:

  • VenueConnect 2022 Welcome

  • ASTC Presents: The History of Phoenix. These Theatres are Hot!

  • Performing Arts Bootcamp

    • Discovering the Vision: A Deep Dive into Audio Description. Setting the scene for a performance happens with all of our senses; the comforting smell of a classic theater; the taste of our favorite pre-show beverage; the sounds of a bustling lobby; the feel of the wooden armrest on our hands; and for many of us, the view of an elaborate set and the ambiance as the lights dim and the show is about to start. However, for patrons with limited or no vision, we can create a different kind of magic. In this session, you will learn the dos and don’ts of audio description. How it works, what equipment you need, resources that are available to you, and the basics of describing a performance. It’s much harder than it looks!

    • Preventative Medicine and First Aid for Soft Goods. Dive into the surprisingly complicated world of soft goods. In this session, we will discuss different types of materials and provide answers to questions like: what are laundry best practices, what is the best way to fold, and what about that flame retardant requirement? Finally, we will look at the various responses available to answer the question, "I ripped my soft good, how do I get through the show?"

    • Performing Arts Center Ethics/Daily Dilemmas. In the IAVM version of “What Would You Do”? participants will team up to  face real (and some not-so-real) scenarios that present a multitude of ethical and legal challenges. After coming up with their own plans, participants will then hear from venue colleagues what actually transpired in each situation. You’ll learn strategies that could help diffuse a charged situation whether it’s with a patron or a member of a touring crew. We cannot promise that John Quinones will host this session however we can promise some interesting tales…

    • Lighting 101. Learn to operate a follow-spot, focus an instrument, and see how the magic happens to light the stage! This session may involve working from heights.

    • Be an Entertainer: Magic and Movement! Experience the stage like entertainers do, and tread the boards for a new perspective! In this session you will learn a magic trick and/or movement sequence to share with a live audience. Your performance will serve as the basis for other boot camps (audio description, lighting design, etc). Whether you want to remember your early days of performing in dance recitals, talent shows, or school plays, or simply want to get out of your comfort zone by playing the part of a performer…this session guarantees fun and entertainment!
