  • LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill., Dec. 2, 2016 – At the 2017 AeroDef Manufacturing Conference and Exhibition, GF Machining Solutions’ applications experts will be on hand in the company’s booth 421 to discuss advanced technologies, products and turnkey systems designed specifically for complex aerospace and defense work.     One such solution designed specifically for tough aerospace part production is the advanced CUT 200 Dedicated wire EDM. Through its built-in A/B tilt/rotary table, fast axis speeds and quick wire threading, this precision-focused machine can quickly and easily cut turbine discs – fir tree patterns – from alloy workpiece materials. It also incorporates on-machine, in-process inspection to ensure consistent, high accuracy parts production.

    Another solution is GF Machining Solutions’ first mill-turn machine, the new Mikron MILL P 800 U ST. This compact machine combines milling and 4-axis simultaneous turning within a single machine platform to help manufacturers achieve optimal productivity, accuracy and cost effectiveness. In addition tocutting aluminum parts more than 50 percent faster than conventional processing, the machine also eliminates transfer-related part runout issues and errors for overall better finished part quality.

    GF Machining Solutions’ CUT 200 Dedicated wire electrical discharge machine (EDM) is designed for complex aerospace work. The machine delivers some of the industry’s highest levels of speed, performance, quality and productivity – giving manufacturers more control of production costs.

    To further enhance productivity and guarantee traceability for finished parts, GF Machining Solutions’ software now features eTracking software that monitors cuts and shows results in real-time. The software completes necessary pre-machining checklists, monitors machine data and compares it to reference values. It also monitors consumable parts and control items, monitors machine status and traces data during machining – and transmits all this data to a user-friendly, real-time dashboard. The eTracking function also alerts and confirms preventive maintenance to increase machine up time and efficiency and prevent any unexpected issues.

    The CUT 200 Dedicated features a built-in A/B tilt/rotary table to easily cut complex aerospace alloy components such as turbine disks using B-axis rotation and +/- 20-degree A-axis tilt. It also incorporates on-machine, in-process inspection that encompasses a measuring probe and supporting software.

    To significantly reduce non-cut times, the CUT 200 Dedicated boasts extremely fast axis speeds and quick wire threading. The latest generation of GF Machining Solutions’ spark generators allows the machine to cut up to speeds of 38”2/hour (400 mm2/min) and up to 30-degree tapers in the Z-axis height, while also producing superior part surface finishes and eliminating recast layers and micro-cracks.   • GF Machining Solutions Introduces Mikron MILL P 800 U ST for Milling and Turning

    GF Machining Solutions has introduced the Mikron MILL P 800 U ST (Simultaneous Turning) to expand its technology portfolio to include milling and turning in a single machine. Highly efficient, the compact machine provides 31.5" (800 mm) of X-axis travel, an 800-rpm C-axis rotation speed and a maximum table load of 1,763 lbs (800 kg).

    GF Machining Solutions developed the MILL P 800 U ST with its gantry-type concept as a direct response to the needs of shops serving the automotive, aerospace, energy and general machining industries. The machine’s small 137" x 118" footprint makes it easy to integrate into existing operations, replacing two machines in the process.

    The combination of milling and turning technology in a single machine helps manufacturers achieve optimal productivity, accuracy and cost effectiveness.  The MILL P 800 U ST achieves perfect workpiece roundness, impeccable surface quality and a high material removal rate to achieve incredible value. Being able to fully machine components on a single machine also eliminates transfer-related part run out and errors and increases finished part quality.

    The MILL P 800 U ST is capable of four-axis simultaneous turning, a capability often required by customers who need to have the cutting tool positioned at a 90-degree angle to the workpiece surface to avoid tool shape errors. The machine incorporates a 20,000-rpm HSK T63 spindle that is the industry’s fastest for a milling and turning machine of this size. Additionally, water-cooled torque motors on the A-axis and C-axis ensure accuracy and stability, while speed is enhanced through the axes’ 0.3-second clamp time in any position.

    With the new machine’s gantry concept, the workpiece on the 31.5" x 31.5" table is fully accessible without rotating the table. This eliminates errors related to table rotation and avoids the need for hand polishing. The tool changer for the machine is also located so as to avoid moving the table during tool changes.

    GF Machining Solutions’ Machine and Spindle Protection (MSP) adds security to the machining process by protecting the machine and spindle against crashing during setup and machining. As the only system on the market to offer protection in all directions, MSP eliminates the spindle damage, misaligned machine geometry, downtime and costs related to unexpected spindle crashes.
