  • Ajax TOCCO Retrofits Customer’s Existing 35kW Induction Heater With Remote Mounted Low Profile Non-Contact Weld Preheat Inductor and Transformer

    Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic recently supplied a forestry products manufacturer a compact remote transformer and low profile heating inductor to be used for preheating prior to GMAW.  These items were sold as a field install kit that are compatible with and utilize the customer’s existing induction heating cables and accessories.  The heating inductor floats above the weldment without making contact.  Versatility and utilization of the 35kW induction heater heater were immediately increased. 

    The customer had a need to be able to heat a rotating weldment with limited space between welds. Existing weld preheat inductors that roll on top of the weldment would not fit between the weldments forcing the customer to rely combustion heating technology (torches).

    Not satisfied with the safety issues and inconsistency associated with combustion heating, the customer reached out to Ajax TOCCO for a solution to their challenges.  Ajax TOCCO was able to quickly analyze their process and custom build a compact, non-contact weld preheat inductor that provided pin point heating accuracy, rapid heat rates, and repeatable traceable results.  The inductor only measures 1 inch x 6 inches and had a 12 inch reach. The size of the inductor is orders of magnitude smaller than existing weld preheat inductors currently offered for moving/rotating parts.  The compact inductor can be located anywhere the weld torch can be positioned.

    The heating inductor is used in conjunction with Ajax TOCCO’s exclusive Slimline hand held transformer. This transformer attaches to the end of existing liquid cooled induction extension cables.  The purpose of the transformer is to magnify the electrical resistance of the low profile weld preheat inductor in order to maintain exact optimal safe operating parameters for the 35kW induction heater.

    High frequency induction heating cables can be configured for round, flat or irregular surfaces. No tools are required for installation and use. All electrical connections are made with quick disconnects and circular military style connectors.     Ajax TOCCO Installs Twin Floating Inductor Weld Preheat System at High Capacity Heavy Duty Fork Truck Manufacturer

    Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic completed the installation of a twin bead weld preheat system for SMAW process at a manufacture of high capacity heavy duty fork/lift trucks. This is the 2nd installation at this facility for Ajax TOCCO. The first was single bead preheat system.

    The new twin bead floating inductor weld preheat system simultaneously heats two corners of a 30ft long 5 ton weldment at a rate of 28 inches per minute to 250F.  The sections of the weldment that are being joined are 1” thick.

    Preheat time has been reduced from 2 hours down to 10 seconds.  Over 700,000 BTU’s worth of natural gas fired infrared heaters have been replaced with a single 35kW TOCCOtron AC induction heating power source.

    Total fabrication time has been reduced by over 60% allowing the manufacturer to produce one weldment per shift vs one weldment every 2.5 shifts.

    Each of the two inductors are positioned approximately 24 inches in front of two 1000 amp sub arc weld torches.  The inductors and torches move in tandem. The weldment is simultaneously heated and welded as gantry traverses the length of the fillet.

    Real time active temperature feedback and control are provided by an Ajax TOCCO supplied non contact infrared sensor.  The output of the induction heater is constantly varied by the PID controller to maintain a constant user defined preheat temperature.
