HRL Laboratories, LLC, the former Hughes Research Labs, is developing new materials for additive manufacturing processes. Recent breakthroughs include pre-ceramic resin systems for stereolithography of high temperature ceramics and novel solidification control mechanisms for selective laser melting of 7000 series aluminum and other previously unprintable alloys. HRL’s pre-ceramic resins can be used in standard stereolithography printers to 3D print ceramic parts with strength of 300MPa (45ksi) and temperature capability exceeding 1300°C (2400F). In contrast to conventional particle filled organic resins, HRL’s resin system is a silicon based inorganic resin that can be directly converted to a ceramic. HRL’s metal additive technology harnesses solidification metallurgy to produce fine grained, crack free builds of alloys that have been difficult or impossible to 3D print. For example, 7000 series aluminum alloy has been laser melted resulting in a strength >450MPa (65ksi) and elongation >15%.
