The freeformers shows the potential of the industrial additive manufacturing of functional plastic parts. With this open system, one-off parts and small-volume batches can be efficiently produced from qualified standard granulate. The material is melted in a plasticizing cylinder and then applied as tiny droplets on a moving three-axis part carrier. As the freeformer is equipped with two stationary discharge units, it can process two components at the same time. This means, that parts can be produced in different colors, with special tactile qualities or as a hard/soft combination. As an alternative, the second discharge unit can be used to build up structures from a special support material. This makes it possible to achieve unusual or very complex part geometries. Moreover, high-volume parts can be enhanced and customer wishes can be incorporated directly in the value chain by combining additive manufacturing, injection molding and Industry 4.0 technologies.
