  • Shop Floor Automations, the #1 authorized reseller of Predator Software, is thrilled to share the changes that Predator MDC (Machine Data Collection) has experienced recently. With the Version 11.0 update, there is a plethora of new features, as well as many fixed features, for this machine monitoring software.

    The benefits that shop floor employees, from executives to plant managers, can expect to gain from implementing Predator MDC are plentiful. Among those benefits, real-time data from machines is collected and automatically processed into reports and charts, which will help turn data into actionable items, such as enhancing operations and coordinating smarter production decisions.

    Another big benefit of MDC v11 is to eliminate costly hardware that would have been needed for the machine tool to capture this real-time data using the Predator CNC Window Service. The services allows for direct Ethernet connection from Fanuc FOCAS, Okuma Thinc, Siemens 840D, MTConnect, and many other network protocols.

    There are many new Charts for users to choose from, with new features to help make collected data easier to read. There are new chart colors, plus machine utilization charts, scrap part charts, and downtime charts, will be especially helpful on the shop floor. There is a new shop floor layout, as well as a new, browser-based Executive dashboard to explore.

    With MDC’s updates, users will now have access to DNC Touch, a touch-screen friendly events interface, and Touch HMI. Users can also enjoy using MDC via Android phones. MDC will now support Windows 10, Windows Server 2012, and Microsoft SQL 2014, and users will have Secure HID style data collection.

    There are also new protocols in the Predator CNC Service, which is used to collect data directly from network based CNCs.  Some of them include Siemens, Oracle, Cincinnati CM100, Secure OPC, Secure Gerber, Okuma Thinc, and MTConnect.

    For improved features, My Favorites has better restore options, improved drag and drop functionality, and new Chart icons. There is HTML-based online help, as well as a more easily usable Chart Options Menu.

    Predator MDC seeks to be the most accessible machine monitoring software, as there is language support for not only English, but also Turkish, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese, German, French, and Chinese. There are also fixes to Measurement Dimension Wizards, Trend Analysis Charts, Inspection Data Charts, Downtime Charts, and many more tools within MDC.

  • Shop Floor Automations, an authorized reseller of Scytec’s DataXchange, is very excited about the changes that the shop floor software is undergoing. 

    DataXchange has undergone many updates - new and enhanced features have been included with Version 2017.05.30, Version 2017.04.18, Version 2017.02.21, and Version 2016.12.07. New features added to the software have been a Data Entry App for Android and iOs, new functionality to the SRC, new Notes sections, new FOCAS variables, new Charts, and much more! 

    Particularly important to mention are the new features from Version 2016.10.03, which includes an MTConnect Data Viewer, which is a testament to DataXchange’s continuing advocacy of the MTConnect protocol. Making the software more compatible with MTConnect will help more shops to realize how crucial the protocol is for the ever-changing manufacturing industry.

    Along with the latest new features, Scytec support staff will now be able to remotely restart DataXchange services. This can help immensely when remote access to the server is not an option.

    The Real-Time Viewer has been updated, adding the ability to copy RTV screens to groups or users, as well as new reports and charts like Operation Time, plus the OEE Equipment Summary and Grid. For additional security, Scytec has also added a UI option to change whether the service runs over http or https. In an effort to prevent future mistakes, you can no longer delete a plant with equipment that has been assigned to it.

    As far as existing features, many have been updated or improved. A line has been added in the Target Utilization per period chart that represents the average for each of the machines. Performance when using some of the forms has been improved, which includes the Equipment form.

    This software update includes a number of bug fixes, as well. Labels on the Metric Definitions page have been fixed to properly reflect the calculations being used. Also, sorting by equipment filter for particular charts and reports has been improved.

    Enjoy easier removal of machines from the RTV, plus your saved utilization charts should now return data. Managing user report group memberships should be smoother, and the Auto Login should work in iOS.

  • Spreadsheets are still pretty prevalent on shop floors, and it’s understandable. It’s a long-standing part of manufacturing operations, as well as in many offices in the manufacturing industry.

    However, sticking to this enduring method could be costing your productivity. Here are five reasons why your shop floor should make the change from spreadsheets to a real-time, graphical job scheduler:

    Reason One: No ROI for time spent on spreadsheets. You are spending time manually noting information on a spreadsheet plus doing related administrative work, such as filing and searching for work order data info. If you have an operation with more than a couple of machines and more than a handful of employees, this is time wasted. You could instead have software with real-time insight from your production schedule that shows capacity usage and keeps jobs running on time.

    Reason Two: Data entry errors require revisiting. Have you ever needed, or has an employee ever needed overtime approved to fix errors with spreadsheets? This is more time, resources and money spent fixing human errors. Instead, there is software that will help with data entry – for example, no duplication errors from entering work times. You will also have day-to-day planning data based on real-time capacity versus guesswork based on previous spreadsheets.

    Reason Three: Control-F isn’t the answer. If you are looking for specific info in a spreadsheet, it is likely you need to remember data from a certain tab, or you go tab to tab and press good ol' “Control-F” to find the info you think you are looking for by keyword. You especially can’t use Control-F if you print all the spreadsheets and file them away, while never saving the digital copies (perhaps due to lack of storage space on an old computer). Instead, particular software programs can help access work orders and look at job statuses immediately without spending more time sifting through information.

    Reason Four: You dread growth because it means more paperwork. A spreadsheet is not going to be able to adjust by itself when you get new jobs in, or when a job is canceled. A spreadsheet also isn’t going to tell you when there are issues with a machine causing a bottleneck. It’s especially a bad situation if you get a last-minute rush order in from a big client and you feel like you have to turn it down because you don’t want to spend the time figuring out how to re-organize jobs. Job tracking, planning and scheduling combined into one simple interface will help your production run more efficiently and to meet, or surpass, promised due dates.

    Reason Five: Machinists are not office clerks. There is a sizable skills gap in manufacturing that will be filled slowly over the next few years, and asking a qualified machinist to spend time helping with redundant paperwork that automated software could be doing for you is not in your best interest. They want to be able to get their hands dirty, create and contribute to a $2 Trillion Dollar, Made in America industry. Asking them to struggle with spreadsheets is an unfair thing to ask when their rare talents can be used elsewhere. User-friendly software only requires a few button pushes for operators to provide immediate feedback on current job statuses.

    The bottom line here is that job scheduling software is crucial for knowing if deliveries will be on time. It takes current jobs, along with machine capacity, and provides the ability to see where your jobs are plus when they are going to be completed. Unexpected downtime on machines will be accounted for and re-scheduling that is based on new machine capacity can occur.

    With a reliable, real-time scheduling system in place, you’ll be better equipped to update valued customers on delivery dates and identify late jobs before they happen so you have time to prepare or fix it. Displays of pre-order and estimated costs, as well as actual costs incurred during manufacturing, are shown as they occur, which is of added value.

  • WiFi USB Connect
    Add WiFi to any machine via USB port. Transmit data from old machines wirelessly to a connected shared folder....

  • The Wi-Fi USB Connect is a device that is plugged into the USB port of a machine. It adds Wi-Fi to the machine via this port, allowing it to connect wirelessly to a shared folder.  

    How exactly does it work? Data is stored on a remote PC in the shop, or locally via memory in the device (up to 128MB of storage in the Wi-Fi USB Connect).

    What steps are needed to set up this device? While a driver is not required, there is just a short web configuration needed initially.

    What will it work on? Nearly any shop floor machine tools with a USB port are compatible with this device. Namely, CNC machines with a USB port, as well as floppy drive emulators, are compatible.

    How will this device further help liberate machine operators? Machinists will be able to see files at their machines on this device as soon as they are individually added to the shared folder. Walking to a programmer’s office is no longer necessary.   • The Multi Connect is a turnkey device, able to continuously monitor the machine’s operating state and other necessary data, while making this information readily available over a network connection using the industry standard MTConnect protocol. The Multi Connect is compatible with a wide range of machine monitoring software packages, including Scytec’s DataXchange, Predator’s MDC (Machine Data Collection), and more!

    What originally required two different devices combined for the desired result, the Multi Connect replaces in one product! This “configure & go” hardware connects to a variety of equipment via built-in digital I/O, which can be overlaid on existing signals for monitoring cycle start, cycle stop, alarm, and status indictors, such as stack lights. These inputs support 10 to 30 VDC signals and may be configured to detect on/off/pulse type signals. The user can then map the data signals to the MTConnect standard data items.

    Network access is provided by a wired Ethernet (100Base-TX) connection in addition to built-in WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n). Additionally, for applications requiring DNC connectivity through serial (RS-232/422/485), single- and dual- port models are available.

    Small and compact, it is designed for direct machine mounting (DIN-rail mountable), packaged in compact and rugged metal chassis. The unit accepts 12 to 48 VDC input power, while all models are equipped with redundant power inputs to ensure uninterrupted operation for industrial applications.

    Some features of the Multi Connect include MicroSD for configuration backup and wireless client function for flexible integration. Along with all the features mentioned, a reliability warranty also comes with this product and covers the hardware for 5 years.
