  • Doral, FL, January 10, 2025:  The American Welding Society (AWS), founded in 1919 as a nonprofit organization to advance the science, technology, and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying, announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Carey Chen as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective Monday, January 20, 2025. Mr. Chen succeeds Robert Roth, who has served as Interim Executive Director and CEO.

    Mr. Chen brings extensive leadership experience to AWS, having previously held CEO roles at Fathom Digital Manufacturing Solutions (NYSE:FATH), Cadrex Manufacturing Solutions, and Incodema Holdings LLC, and as Executive Chairman and President of Cincinnati Incorporated. Earlier in his career, he held key executive positions, including Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of Hypertherm, Inc., Vice President Finance of Wiremold | Legrand (Paris:LR.PA), and Vice President & CFO of Bayliner Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of the Brunswick Corporation (NYSE:BC).

    A longstanding supporter of AWS, Mr. Chen has been an active volunteer with AWS and the AWS Foundation since 2007. He served as Treasurer from 2015 to 2022, during which he chaired the Finance & Business Development and Investment Committees and was a member of both the AWS Board of Directors and the AWS Foundation Board of Trustees. Most recently, he chaired the Audit Committee. His contributions to AWS have earned him prestigious recognitions, including being named an AWS Counselor in 2022 and receiving the National Meritorious Award in 2024.

    Commenting on his new role, Mr. Chen said, "After nearly two decades of volunteer leadership at AWS, I am honored to take on this new responsibility as CEO. I look forward to working closely with our talented staff, dedicated board of directors, volunteers, and members to advance AWS’s mission and vision, driving innovation and growth for the welding community.”

    ​In addition to his role at AWS, Mr. Chen currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Roberts Hawaii, Inc., an independent Board Director for CHART Rehabilitation, and an Independent Board Advisor for KarYard, Inc.  Mr. Chen received a BS in Applied Mathematics from University of California, Los Angeles.  He earned an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and currently serves on the Gies College of Business Dean’s Business Council. He also holds several US Patents.

Originally developed in 1928 as the “Code for Fusion Welding and Gas Cutting in Structural Steel” to standardize welding in building construction applications, D1.1/D1.1M has since become the globally recognized benchmark for structural welding requirements. Almost a century later, it remains the welding industry’s definitive resource for engineers, fabricators, and inspectors.

    The D1.1/D1.1M code outlines requirements for welded structures made from carbon and low-alloy constructional steels, providing essential guidelines that influence the design, fabrication, qualification and inspection of steel structures worldwide.     The American Welding Society (AWS) has been named a 2025 South Florida Top Workplace by the South Florida Sun Sentinel.   • The American Welding Society (AWS), in collaboration with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), has released American National Standard (ANS) AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5:2025, Bridge Welding Code, the latest edition for welding fabrication requirements applicable to steel highway bridges and bridge components, to be used in conjunction with the applicable AASHTO design specifications.

    AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5 is the premier reference used by professionals responsible for the strength, safety, and reliability of steel bridge structures across the United States. Whether welding is performed in a fabrication facility or in the field, AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5 provides the procedures, testing requirements, and acceptance criteria necessary to meet rigorous performance expectations.

    “The release of D1.5:2025 reinforces AWS’s commitment to safe, effective bridge welding practices,” said Jennifer Molin, Director of Standards Committee Operations at AWS. “This edition reflects ongoing developments in bridge fabrication and repair, ensuring the code continues to meet the needs of today’s bridge welding professionals.”

    Key updates in the AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5:2025 edition include:
    • Addition of flare-bevel groove welds for design
    • Provisions for unlisted base metals, fillet weld qualifications, postweld heat treatment, SMAW restrictions
    • Provisions for undercut tolerances
    • Clarification of fracture critical welding personnel qualification
    • Editorial changes to improve clarity, consistency, and ease of use

    AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5 is designed to support engineers, inspectors, and welding personnel with a shared framework for critical decision-making on infrastructure projects. The 2025 edition updates the advanced ultrasonic inspection requirements to align with AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2025, Structural Welding Code-Steel.
