  • If you plan to integrate a rotary axis drive system into a high-performance machine or process, accurate motion is undoubtedly among your primary concerns. This is particularly true in machine tools, for example, where rotary axes help tools manipulate workpieces from various angles to create sophisticated parts. However, depending on the size requirements and loads involved, it can be difficult to build a precision rotary axis drive system from standard parts — particularly when it comes to zero backlash. That’s why it’s important to work with a motion control partner that leverages both proven expertise and a full range of modular axis products to make it a one-stop shop for all your requirements.

    Typical Challenges When Building Rotary Drives
    Here are some typical rotary axis drive elements that often challenge machine builders when specifying components for their systems:

    • Accuracy and stiffness. Elaborate parts and assemblies demand accurate motion. For example, servo speed reducers must exhibit high stiffness to ensure precise control of control servo motor speed and torque while also minimizing or eliminating backlash.
    • Diameter. Large-diameter rotary axes are especially susceptible to deflections which, even if minor, can affect the quality of the end product.
    • Load management. In CNC machines, for example, the weights of workpieces and the tools that process them can vary from job to job. Rotary axes must account for all the potential load requirements including radial, axial and tilting.

  • Backlash in rack and pinion drives used in machine tools reduces positioning accuracy and can even cause damage to nearby components. An effective way to prevent this is by using a rack and pinion system with two gear reducers whose output pinions are preloaded against the rack. Our previous blog post describes two Redex preloading technologies that enable zero-backlash rack and pinion drive systems — DualDRIVE and TwinDRIVE. In addition to delivering exceptional rigidity and precise motion, they are also easy to set up. This blog post will explain how.

    Servo Reducers: The Heart of Preloaded Rack and Pinion Drive Systems
    Redex SRP, DRP, KRP and side-mounted KRPX Series rack and pinion reducers are at the heart of the DualDRIVE or TwinDRIVE preload concepts, and they are well-suited for use in CNC applications.

    • DualDRIVE is a one-motor drive technology that mechanically preloads the entire system to eliminate backlash. It uses two SRP or two KRP reducers, or one DRP with two units in a single housing.
    • TwinDRIVE consists of two electrically coupled SRP, KRP reducers. DRP also becomes a TwinDRIVE when an electrical preload is applied.

    A Simple Way To Apply the Preload Torque
    Setting the preload is simple, as shown below in the example DualDRIVE system. The gearbox kits come with a locking mechanism that slides into the coupling and holds it stationary. The coupling fastening screws opposite the motor are left loose. The preload torque is applied with a torque wrench on the input shaft opposite the motor, and it goes through a set of spiral bevel gears, a planetary reducer and then to the rack as shown. Both the output pinions contact the rack as the preload is applied, so the preload returns through the other gearbox. At this point, the screws of the coupling are tightened, and the preload is set. The preload torque value is calculated based on the application requirements, and it is controlled by the torque wrench on the input shaft.

    Similarly, a TwinDRIVE system is just as easy to set up. Unlike DualDRIVE, the preload is created by fixing a permanent preload gap torque via one pinion electrically braking against the other — driving — pinion. In this manner, the drive controls the backlash.

    The Anglgear™ line consists of 14 different models, available from stock in both an Inch and Metric series and sold worldwide. We take pride in the fact that all Anglgear drives are made in the USA, at our headquarters in New Jersey. Here, we manufacture, assemble and inspect every unit that goes out the door. This ensures consistent quality in all of our gearboxes.

    Our standard units are available from stock in 1:1 and 2:1 ratios, with 2 shafts or 3, 2 flanged or 3 flanged units, and are lubricated for life before being shipped.

    Each housing is precision-machined on our CNC machining center and coated with a chemical film plating to protect the material. In addition, we offer special materials and coatings for protection in corrosive environments. All housings receive NADCAP certification, and have flanged ends and side bosses for compact installation in a wide range of applications.

    Over the past 10 years, we have seen that a huge part of our growth in this line is due to the fact that we will modify our units to meet our customers’ design specifications. It doesn’t matter if it’s a one-piece special order or a quantity order; our engineers will work with our customers to give them the best solution for their application and needs.

    Examples of our modifications include various shaft lengths and configurations, including shafts with flats, splines, holes, etc. We also offer 3-way units with counter-rotating output shafts, as well as custom housings with flanges and bosses removed for custom mounting applications, special materials, bearings, seals and epoxy coatings as needed.   • Arcelor Mittal's Bremen steelworks now features a compact and efficient side trimmer line for galvanized hot-rolled strip. To overcome spatial constraints, Redex installed the system above the existing galvanizing line—an unconventional but elegant solution. Operational since commissioning, the plant produces high-quality sheet steel ranging from 0.6 to 6.3 mm thick.
    Steelmaking is deeply rooted in Bremen's industrial heritage. The Arcelor Mittal site, active since 1957 and part of the global group since 2007, spans 7 km² and produces up to 3.5 million tons of crude steel annually. Its flat steel output serves industries like automotive, construction, mechanical engineering, home appliances, and tubing. The product portfolio includes hot-dip galvanized sheets.
    As part of its modernization efforts, Arcelor Mittal commissioned Redex GmbH to retrofit a trimming station downstream of its Bregal 2 galvanizing line. This line processes steel at up to 120 m/min and thicknesses of 0.6–6.3 mm. The goal: enhance sheet quality with precisely trimmed edges.
    Redex Group, bolstered by the integration of BGW’s specialized team in 2020, used its deep experience in rolling mill tech to address the project’s spatial challenge. With no room to expand laterally, engineers elevated the trimming unit onto a new platform, supported by the existing steel structure. This demanded rerouting the strip path while respecting height constraints.
    The redesigned strip path begins in the basement with a pilot roller, guiding the strip vertically through the marking machine. Tension rollers increase belt force, leading to the side punch and trimming unit. After trimming, the strip ascends vertically for inspection and tensioning before horizontal delivery to the recoiler.
    Redex trimmers feature rotary head shears with two offset roller knives (40 mm thick, 450 mm diameter) for precise, burr-free cuts and minimal blade wear. A dual-gap adjustment system customizes the cut depending on strip thickness and material, directing trimmed edges into hardened guides and into a scrap chopper.
    To minimize downtime, the system offers fast width adjustment via a servo motor driving counter-rotating ball screws. Blade gap settings use electromechanical actuators—an electric cylinder with low-backlash nuts and a precision encoder for high-accuracy trimming. Overlap control is handled by a second actuator.
    A side punch simplifies coil transitions by punching areas between old and new strips, allowing disengagement of the knives and repositioning for a new width. The trimmer accommodates strip widths from 600 to 1800 mm and trimming widths from 6 to 100 mm.


     
  • The 100th UMS flatness control system, that has been installed by Redex worldwide, is used at the Arinox factory to produce thin and ultrathin precision rolled strip of the highest quality.Arinox, one of the companies of the Arvedi Group, is a benchmark in the steel industry. It is currently the only Italian producer - and one of the largest at an international level - of precision rolled stainless steel. The Sestri Levante plant, in the province of Genoa, produces thin and extra-thin precision rolled strip in widths up to 1570 mm and gauges down to 0.050 mm. 

    With an annual capacity of over 65,000 tonnes and state-of-the-art industrial facilities, the Sestri Levante industrial centre produces precision-rolled stainless steel, nickel alloy and titanium strip for the automotive, precision mechanical, plant engineering, components, biomedical and electronics sectors.

    The stainless steel precision strip sector is a particularly important one due to the high-tech content of the product, which requires the availability of cutting-edge machinery, combined with extraordinary technical expertise in production processes. Arinox has always actively collaborated with its strategic suppliers, such as Redex for the flattening process, to develop those innovative solutions that allow it to differentiate itself on the market by offering products of the highest quality and precision.

    Perfect flatness is a quality guarantee
    To offer quality rolled products, it is essential that the material is as flat as possible. The flatter a strip is, the better it is slit, avoiding deformations in the subsequent slitting process. The rolling process flattening operation downstream and any annealing makes the strip more suitable for precision slitting, by improving its mechanical characteristics. At the Sestri Levante plant, Arinox has always successfully used Redex solutions to carry out tension leveling operations.

    As Mr. Mauro Moretti, Technical Director of Arinox, tells us: “Ever since our first narrow-table rolling line, we have adopted the tension leveling technology of Ungermann, a company that later merged with Redex. Given the excellent results, when subsequently investing in rolling mills of 1260 mm width and, more recently, of 1575 mm width, we again chose Redex's flattening solutions, a company with which we continue to collaborate very successfully and whose expertise and availability we appreciate.”

    The main purpose of the tension-leveling process for rolled metal strip is to correct the shape of the material by bending it through small, calibrated deformations under the effect of an externally applied pull. The outcome is a controlled elongation, which makes the short fibres of the strip long and equal to the longer ones, thus achieving a flat strip and relieving internal stresses.

    The 100th UMS flatness control system
    The flatness measurement and control system plays a very important role in order for the tension leveling system to guarantee the required level of precision.

    The UMS (Unflatness Measurement System) from Redex, which has now evolved into the even more sophisticated UMP PRO (Proactive) version, is a world-renowned solution for its accuracy and effectiveness. It has enjoyed considerable success worldwide, and the 100th system of this kind has been installed precisely at Arinox, actively contributing to maintaining flatness within the very strict tolerance limits required by the Ligurian company's customers.
    As Mr. Moretti explains: “by means of an intelligent roller sensorised with piezoelectric cells, the UMS PRO system corrects the position of the wedges in the leveling box and the pulling force in real time, without any need for the operator’s manual intervention, thus guaranteeing great uniformity of product quality.”

    But research and experimentation of innovative solutions is ongoing at Arinox, in keeping with the tradition of the parent company Arvedi Group. For example, a new type of bridle roller has recently been tested in collaboration with Redex, which has proved to be particularly suitable for further improving the flattening process, particularly in the machining of raw materials, i.e. rolled stainless steel without annealing, often used in the automotive sector or for manufacturing springs.

    Mr. Moretti concludes: “Machines are never perfect, it is men who must know how to drive them and make them better. In Redex, we have found a partner with whom we can pursue our path of continuous improvement.”
