 Press Releases

  • SWD is a leader in metal finishing and fastener sorting. Their 200,000 square foot facility processes up to 500 work orders a day and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility is a heavy industrial setting where metal bins and parts move to and around various finishing and sorting stations in the densely packed facility.

    THE PROBLEM: LOST WORK ORDERS

The SWD facility operates in a challenging RF reflective industrial environment. Every day, thousands of metal parts arrive for finishing and must be promptly shipped to customers once completed. The parts come in various container types, including large rigid steel containers, and are moved throughout the facility to different finishing and sorting stations. With such a high volume of work orders, it was difficult for SWD to keep track of the location and progress of each part in the finishing process, as some require multiple stages of finishing.

To address these challenges, SWD implemented the WISER ATLAS system. The system allows for instant association of work-order or part numbers with tags and real-time tracking throughout the entire manufacturing cycle. This enables SWD to effectively manage up to 3,600 parts per day and reassign 500 work orders with ease and precision.

    THE SOLUTION: WISER’S ATLAS SYSTEM

The SWD facility was equipped with the innovative WISER ATLAS system, which has revolutionized their manufacturing processes. The system enables instant association of work-order or part numbers with tags and real-time tracking of the tags throughout the entire manufacturing cycle.

This allows authorized users to easily monitor the movement of all tags in the facility through the WISER mobile/desktop app. The app’s user-friendly interface also makes it simple to log items as assets and locate any tag in real-time with its efficient search function.

Other tracking systems have proven inadequate in heavy metal environments like SWD’s facility, either not working at all or requiring a substantial amount of costly infrastructure to function properly. The WISER ATLAS system, on the other hand, provides reliable and efficient tracking capabilities with minimal additional infrastructure required.

THE RESULTS: IMPROVED WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT VIA IMPROVED WORK ORDER PROCESS VISIBILITY

Real-time data enables manufacturers to optimize a range of processes. With location data, they can pinpoint areas of inefficiency and eliminate bottlenecks in manufacturing and shipping. The enhanced visibility also strengthens quality control, ensuring that every essential component is available when needed and minimizing the risk of loss, misplacement, or improper handling of manufactured parts. WISER’s asset tracking technology provides manufacturers with data-driven insights and enables them to make informed decisions in real-time.

  • WISER’s innovative asset tracking system plays a pivotal role in streamlining operations and tracking production at Mainway Metalworks, a Canadian custom fabrication shop. This use-case highlights how WISER’s Locator transforms operations, addressing the challenges faced by a tool and metal stamping manufacturer.

The Problem: Tracking Dies Through Active and Complex Processes

Mainway encountered difficulties in tracking customer specific dies within its facility, leading to potential production halts. The complexity intensified with look-alike assets; its traditional manual clipboard-based approach fell short during times of increased production and expansion of manufacturing processes.

Addressing Immediate Needs: Custom Dies Tracking
The immediate need was to track custom dies (stamping jigs) for processed metal parts. With hundreds of dies, finding the right one for a specific customer order became a daunting task. The challenge was exacerbated by the lack of memory regarding the last location of a die, which could span months or even years. The company approached the issue by associating each production task with a specific die holding identifying work orders. Workers moved the dies in bins across the facility as products progressed, creating challenges in locating the right die due to their similar appearances and variable movements.

    The Solution: WISER’s Locator RTLS

Mainway implemented WISER’s Tracker Tags on each tool die, offering real-time location tracking accurate within inches. WISER’s networked wireless smart antenna nodes capture asset locations, overlaying them on a facility map in real time. Mainway utilizes WISER’s tracker app and visualization tool on tablets to find dies throughout the facility.

In addition, Mainway utilized WISER’s WISER RTLS Antennas’ Ruggedized Enclosures and outdoor solar installation solution, due to the unavailability of power outdoors.

The Results: Real-Time Visibility and Efficiency

WISER’s tracking system provided immediate visibility to die locations, allowing workers to locate them effortlessly. This eliminated the need for hours of searching, saving countless hours of manual labor and improving production efficiency. The system generated comprehensive data on part, project, and work order statuses, empowering users to address issues preemptively and optimize future production.

Mainway’s WISER installation will produce extensive data covering all components, projects, and the status of work orders in the future. This will enable users to proactively address bottleneck and quality issues and optimize future production.

WISER’s asset tracking system provides a comprehensive solution by autonomously and instantly measuring performance metrics for all production stages on-site empowers end-users with real-time insights, prevents downtime, and boosts overall operational efficiency, seamlessly integrating with existing workflows. This case illustrates how WISER’s Redundant Radio Location and Tracking (RRLT) technology not only transforms tracking and location management in intricate manufacturing settings but also provides data visualization and insight into operational and productivity improvements that may not have been otherwise apparent.

  • In many manufacturing environments, the movement of Work-in-Progress (WIP) is one of the least visible yet most critical aspects of production. Whether a facility is building industrial machinery, assembling electronics, or processing custom components, WIP materials often spend more time waiting or moving than actually being worked on.

By nature, WIP involves multiple moving parts, both literally and organizationally. Managing that complexity presents major challenges: forecasting product completion, maintaining the right balance of inventory, and preventing loss or damage along the way.

Manufacturers use a variety of tools to manage WIP, from clipboards and spreadsheets to specialized software or dedicated tracking hardware. This is where Real Time Location Tracking and WISER’s RTLS and zone-based alerts can make a measurable difference.

    What is RTLS?

Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) are technologies that automatically track the real-time location of objects or people, especially within indoor environments like factories, warehouses, and yards. RTLS solutions typically use tags or transponders attached to assets (such as carts, tools, or WIP) along with a network of fixed readers or sensors to detect and report their positions. RTLS, particularly those using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, provides high accuracy that is often within a meter and enables precise, real-time visibility of materials and movement within a facility.

In manufacturing, RTLS enables teams to:

    • Monitor flow across departments or stations
    • Eliminate wasted time searching for assets
    • Detect delays, congestion, or misrouted work
    • Improve process stability and responsiveness

It can also automate or supplement error-prone manual processes such as scanning or logging, especially in environments where scanning is impractical due to layout constraints, time pressures, or the high volume of movement.

    How WISER Adds Value

It is important to note that WISER’s solution is uniquely suited for the manufacturing environment. Because RTLS provides real-time tracking 24/7 of any tagged asset, it is like a continuous barcode scanner of every tagged item. Supervisors and Operators can always look up the current or past locations of any item.

By using UWB technology, the WISER system maintains accuracy even in reflective metal environments. The hardware and software were designed with the manufacturer in mind to be affordable to purchase and maintain, and to be simple to use for the plant managers and the machine operators. The software package has many features, such as straightforward tag assignment and re-assignment, easy grouping, and zone alerts that address the unique needs of factories that are high-mix, carry a large amount of WIP, or have testing flows with re-work loops.
