  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has launched its ESAB 7018-1 Prime low-hydrogen Stick electrodes (AWS E7018-1 H4R) in the U.S. market. ESAB 7018-1 Prime comes in a 24-lb. master carton that contains six VacPac™ vacuum-sealed packages. They are available in all diameters from 3/32 to 5/32 in. and 14-in. lengths.

ESAB 7018-1 Prime provides excellent operator appeal, offering good slag release, weld puddle control and a higher deposition rate. Operators can weld faster without sacrificing out-of-position welding performance. A graphite coating on the end of the electrode improves arc initiation. Applications include power generation, structural steel, offshore, pressure vessel fabrication, petrochemical industry, food processing and other industries where the prevention of cold cracking or porosity is crucial.

Packaged for the Way Welders Work

“The VacPac contains 4 lbs. of electrodes because the average welder in an industrial operation consumes 3 to 5 lbs. of electrodes per shift,” says Halinson Campos, Product Business Manager - Filler Metals, ESAB. “Compared to the industry’s standard 50-lb. cans, VacPac reduces or eliminates the need to scrap unused electrodes at the end of the day or re-bake them in a rod oven. Four-pound packages are also much easier for operators to carry and less expensive to ship.”

VacPac features a laminated, multi-layer aluminum foil that is hermetically-sealed around a strong plastic inner box. Protected by a cardboard outer box, they have unlimited shelf life and do not require special warehouse conditions, provided they are handled with care and the foil is not damaged. Upon opening, fresh and dry electrodes are guaranteed when the vacuum is confirmed. Distributors have the flexibility to sell individual 4-lb. packages.

    Special Designations

The -1 designation indicates Charpy V-Notch properties measured at lower temperatures. ESAB 7018-1 Prime provides as-welded impact values of 78 ft.-lbs. at -50 oF and 168 ft.-lbs. at -20 oF. Electrodes with a -1 designation may also be used when procedures call for a standard E7018 electrode, but not vice versa.

ESAB 7018-1 Prime also carries the H4R designation, indicating less than 4 ml of diffusible hydrogen per 100 g of deposited weld. These electrodes can be used straight out of the VacPac package without the need to bake or store them temporarily in holding ovens or quivers to meet low-hydrogen requirements. Designed for moisture resistances, H4R electrodes also have less than 0.4 percent moisture absorption after 12 hours of exposure at 80 oF and 80 percent relative humidity.

    Two Premium Lines

While ESAB 7018-1 Prime is new to the U.S., it is an established and respected global product, sold in Canada, the EU, Middle East and Asia under the name OK 55.00. ESAB manufactures these low-hydrogen electrodes at its Perstrop, Sweden, facility, where the quality system is certified by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and other international bodies.

The introduction of ESAB 7018-1 Prime compliments ESAB’s existing Atom Arc® and Atom Arc Acclaim low-hydrogen electrodes. Made from domestic steel cores at ESAB’s Hanover, Penn., facility, Atom Arc and Atom Arc Acclaim meet “Buy America” requirements.

  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has launched OK AristoRod® 38 Zn, a solid wire with a specially alloyed formula that minimizes porosity and spatter on galvanized steels at FABTECH 2019, November 11-14, at McCormick Place in Chicago. As a result, it significantly reduces or eliminates rejects and rework, delivering optimized results when welding the galvanized steel components used in transportation, white goods, agricultural tanks and troughs, HVAC systems and construction (roofs, facades, gates, fences, stairs, catwalks).

Manufacturers are using thicker Zn coatings so that they can produce longer lasting components and offer longer anti-corrosion product warranties. However, a thicker coating exacerbates the challenges inherent with welding galvanized steel. Zinc melts at temperatures lower than steel (786 ºF vs. 2,498 ºF). As a result, the heat of the welding arc releases zinc vapor around the weld pool, which affects arc stability and contributes to excess spatter. If trapped in the weld pool, the vapor causes porosity as the weld solidifies.

“Through tightly controlled micro-alloying elements in its formulation, OK AristoRod 38 Zn allows the zinc vapor to escape. It addresses the root cause of porosity and spatter associated with standard ER70S-6 wires without the expense or increased risk of burn through associated with metal cored wires,” says Jose Abal-Lopez, Global Product Manager Non and Low Alloyed Solid Wires, ESAB. “ESAB conducted head-to-head tests against other common options for welding galvanized steel. The results were conclusive: OK AristoRod 38 Zn offers the best performance at the lowest total cost of production.”

OK AristoRod 38 Zn is available in diameters of .030, .040 and .045 in. in 33- and 40-lb. spools and 550-lb. Marathon Pacs. It is classified as an AWS A5.18 ER70S-G.

  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – Victor®, an ESAB brand, has introduced its new D1G Dome Load Regulator at FABTECH 2019, November 11-14, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Built to handle exceptionally high gas flow rates, the D1G Dome Regulator provides very stable delivery at flow rates exceeding 30,000 cubic feet per hour, such as for tube trailers, cylinder bundles and gas bundles. It is available with four different inlet fittings: no fitting, CGA 580 (inert gas), CGA 540 (oxygen) and CGA 590 (industrial air).

“High flow applications, such as a 10kW laser, require more nitrogen, so we increased the diameter of the inlet and outlet ports by 50 percent compared to our previous design,” says John Henderson, Sr. Director – Industrial & Specialty Gas Products, ESAB. “We moved from a 100-micron filter to a 50-micron filter to better prevent contamination and keep internal components cleaner. The filter is easily replaceable by simply removing the retaining ring holding it in place.”

Henderson notes that the D1G design eliminates pressure drop as demand increases. It functions similarly to a two-stage regulator, but without the sacrifice in flow capacity.

“Other high-flow regulators use a separate dome regulator and a pilot regulator, but the D1G incorporates them into one piece, which is why we refer to the D1G as a pilot dome load regulator,” he says. “The Victor design makes it easier to remotely control On/Off because there’s only one component to control.”

  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has introduced its Dual Shield® Prime family of seamless, low-hydrogen (H4) non-copper-coated flux cored wires at FABTECH 2019, November 11-14, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Dual Shield Prime wires combat moisture absorption in humid environments, delivering impact toughness down to -76 ºF. Tests performed in accordance with AWS standards show an initial level of 2.17 ml of diffusible hydrogen per 100 g of deposited weld metal; after one week of exposure with a 90% RH at 86 ºF, Dual Shield Prime demonstrated just 2.35 ml of diffusible hydrogen.

“We laser seal the seams, so there’s no chance of Dual Shield Prime picking up moisture,” says Bob Gulas, Business Product Manger – Cored Wire, ESAB. “Even after extended storage and exposure, these H4 wires retain their low hydrogen properties. Where procedures allow, Dual Shield Prime’s low diffusible hydrogen may eliminate or reduce preheat requirements.”

Dual Shield Prime wires are especially suited for high-tensile steels and applications that require low temperature impact toughness, notably in the ship, offshore, oil/gas and processing industries. All carry ABS approval, with additional approval by product, including BV approval, for the 81Ni1 H4 grades.

    Operator Friendly

Users at naval shipyards and construction engineering companies report that Dual Shield Prime produces a very soft arc with almost spatter-free welds and easy slag removal, an important consideration in multi-pass applications. With a spray-type transfer, operators can easily manipulate and control the weld puddle, enjoy good wetting with tie-in at the toes of the weld and achieve good penetration.

    No Copper Coating

Dual Shield Prime is a non-copper-coated wire. As a result, there are no copper flakes to contaminate wire feeders, liners, torches and contact tips with copper particles. The result is trouble free feeding, high process stability, reduced consumption of wear parts and superior welding properties. Combined with lower diffusible hydrogen, these properties add up to increased productivity, lower welding costs and higher quality welds.

    Dual Shield Prime Products

ESAB offers Dual Shield Prime in four different compositions and diameters of .045 to 1/16 in.:

    • Dual Shield Prime 71 H4. For mild steel and 490N/mm2 class high tensile steel; uses Ar/CO2.
    • Dual Shield Prime 71 LT H4. For mild steel and 490N/mm2 class high tensile steel for low temperature service; uses Ar/CO2 or 100% CO2 shielding gas.
    • Dual Shield Prime 81Ni1 H4. For mild steel, 490N/mm2 class high tensile steel and 550N/mm2 class high tensile for low temperature service; uses 100% CO2 shielding gas.
    • Dual Shield Prime 81Ni1M H4. Designed to weld thick steel components and for impact toughness down to -76 ºF; uses Ar/CO2.

  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has launched its Pipeweld Orbiter mechanized welding system and a complete line of Pipeweld consumables at FABTECH 2019. Designed for welding pipeline tie-ins and special sections such as road and river crossings, Pipeweld Orbiter can lower cost-per-joint by 40 percent and complete projects 50 percent faster. A crew of four manual welders and six pairs using Pipeweld Orbiters can average 60 to 65 joints per day on 48-in. diameter, ¾-in. wall pipe. Demonstrations of the system will take place in the ESAB booth, B17087, in the North Building of Chicago’s McCormick Place, Nov. 11 – 14.

“Pipeweld Orbiter combines the productivity benefits of mechanized welding with the high deposition rates and familiarity of flux cored welding,” says Gordon Eadie, Global Pipeline Segment Manager, ESAB. “We’ve proven this system and Pipeweld filler metal in European applications for several years and are now launching them in North America.”

Eadie explains that after completing the root and hot pass with Pipeweld cellulosic electrodes, Pipeweld Orbiter automates the fill and cap passes using Pipeweld flux cored electrodes. Another procedure is to use Pipeweld DH (downhill) low-hydrogen electrodes for the first fill pass, then Pipeweld Orbiter for the remaining passes. The mechanized solution completes joints faster because uphill flux cored welding offers deposition rates up to 9 lbs. per hour. It also increases consistency, reducing reject rates compared to using all SMAW or solid wire, narrow gap procedures.

    Simplicity

Pipeweld Orbiter consists of a lightweight bug and a fast-fit band that clamps on pipe with diameters greater than 8 in. The bug contains the controls, wire spool holder, wire feed mechanism, torch, bug drive mechanism and cables and hoses, all connected as one unit. The same bug works on both sides of the pipe. It works with any CV power source that provides sufficient output for the wire selected, including ESAB Aristo® Mig and Warrior® power sources. A hardwired pendant control enables the operator to observe the weld puddle and make on-the-fly adjustments, such as to travel speed, oscillation width or contact-tip-to-work distance.

Pipeweld Orbiter eliminates the computers, long training periods, quality issues and high rental costs associated with solid wire, narrow gap welding systems. With simple controls and the familiar vertical up flux cored process, contractors can train operators in one day or less, then deploy them for immediate productivity. Further, contractors retain their assets at the end of the job, providing a superior ROI compared to rental systems.

    Pipeweld Filler Metals

Along with Pipeweld Orbiter, ESAB has launched a complete line of Pipeweld filler metal with formulations that have been specifically tailored for X52 to X100 grade pipe. They include cellulosic electrodes, low-hydrogen vertical up and vertical down electrodes, solid wires and gas-shielded flux cored wires.

“The ESAB series of Pipeweld products was designed by pipeline welders, for pipeline welders,” says Eadie. “They deliver excellent mechanical properties and outstanding operator appeal. We also use field-friendly vacuum-sealed packaging on our low-hydrogen electrodes that guarantees the electrodes will remain dry until the package is opened.” This includes the Pipeweld flux cored wires used with the Pipeweld Orbiter and stick electrodes both in VacPac™ packages.

  • Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products will launch its new SAVAGE A40 automatic welding helmet at FABTECH 2019, November 11-14, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Inspired by the radical SENTINEL™ A50, the new SAVAGE A40 automatic welding helmet provides ideal functionality for the occasional and professional welder at an attractive price.

“SAVAGE uses ESAB’s ultra-clear True Color lens technology for a better view of the weld puddle and surrounding area,” says Azfar Kamal, Director R&D – USA, ESAB. “When precise bead placement counts, welders can count on the brighter view and enhanced color definition with SAVAGE.”

Like SENTINEL, welders can stay more productive with SAVAGE’s externally activated Grind Button. Even while wearing a heavy glove, welders can activate a shade 4 Grind Mode on the left side of the helmet. Grind Mode may be suitable for cutting processes as well.

    A Bigger, Better View

SAVAGE viewing technology is based on a 1/1/1/2 optical class lens (the same class as SENTINEL), and with DIN 9 – 13 shade adjustment. A 3.93- x 1.96-in. (100 x 50 mm) viewing area provides a wide field of vision and increased spatial awareness. Four sensors provide a high response, especially when welding out-of-position.

“Helmets with a 1/1/1/2 optical class rating offer a sharp, clear and consistent view of the weld puddle without the extra cost to obtain the angle dependency 1 rating, a difference that most operators find difficult to perceive,” notes Kamal. “Our voice-of-customer research shows this class provides users with the best combination of performance and value.”

Sensitivity and delay controls inside the helmet let users adjust the response to various welding conditions. Sensitivity control is an adaptable feature useful when welding low amp TIG for better reaction to darker arc light. Delay control enables the welder to set how long the lens stays dark after the welding arc stops. Short delay helps get the job done faster during tack welding, while longer delay is useful for high amperage welding.

The high-tech, lightweight helmet — it weighs just 17.6 oz. — provides extreme comfort and protection in all processes. When safety precautions require a hardhat, use the SAVAGE A40 optional hardhat adapter.
