Here at MPT our process is unique compared to other case hardening methods. We use a “pulsed plasma nitriding” system. This system incorporates nitrogen into the surface of the metal. The system functions by accelerating nitrogen atoms towards the metal parts within the furnace. The nitrogen atoms smash into the surface of the metal, cleaning the metal surface and diffusing into the metal part. The implanted nitrogen combines with other elements within the metal part (iron, manganese, chromium etc.) to form a hard-outer case. This allows the inner core of the metal to stay softer, while providing a strong, durable and wear resistant surface that is not brittle. The benefit of this system is it allows us to perform the operation at a lower temperature than other types of case hardening. The lower temperature drastically reduces the chance of part distortion
