The flagship of ACTFL assessments is the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The ACTFL OPI is an internationally recognized, valid and reliable assessment of speaking proficiency. Interactive and adaptive, the OPI is a 15-30 minute telephone interview between an ACTFLcertified Tester and the test taker. The OPI assesses speaking proficiency across the full range of the ACTFL scale, from Novice through Superior. All tests are rated by ACTFL-certified Testers according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 – Speaking.

The ACTFL OPI is appropriate for a variety of assessment purposes including:

• Seal of Biliteracy
• Placement
• College Credit – Official OPI ratings are recommended for college credit based on the American Council on Education credit-by-examination review.

The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is unlike any other assessment. The AAPPL addresses the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and uses today's communication media in which test takers perform tasks such as participating in a virtual video chat, creating wikis, e-mailing, and using apps to demonstrate language ability. 

The AAPPL assesses the following modes of communication:

• Interpersonal Listening/Speaking
• Presentational Writing
• Interpretive Reading and Listening

The AAPPL Form A/B is available in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

The AAPPL Form E is a testing option for learners of Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, and Spanish in 3rd and 4th grades. Form E features age-appropriate content and assesses Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS), allowing young learners' speaking and listening proficiency to be assessed independently of reading, writing, or technical skills.
