  • Landscape Forms Celebrates 50 Years of Modern Design and American Craft
Kalamazoo, MI – April 11, 2019 - 50 and Forward. North America’s premier manufacturer of high design site furniture, structures, accessories, and LED lighting marks a half century of growth with an appreciative look back and a forward focus on continued innovation in site furnishings for evolving outdoor spaces. Landscape Forms president and CEO Richard Heriford, says, “Turning fifty is a significant accomplishment for us, one that not too many companies can claim. In celebrating, we want to honor the heroes who made Landscape Forms and its success possible: our founder, visionary landscape architect John Chipman; his successor as president and CEO, and current Chairman of the Board, Bill Main, who led three decades of exponential growth; and generations of fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters whose work makes us who we are today.”

Founded in 1969, in the same year Apollo 11 landed on the moon, Landscape Forms has travelled light years in the fifty years since it began. From a small crew crafting benches in a back-yard garage to an industry leading manufacturer with hundreds of associates in four Kalamazoo, Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona facilities and sales offices worldwide, the company is focused on design innovation for all the ways people spend time outdoors: living, working, playing, learning, caring and travelling. In 2017 it achieved over $100 million in sales. Landscape Forms was the first in the site furniture industry to introduce integrated collections for targeted sectors, such as the urban transit core. It has formed design partnerships with an international roster of renowned design professionals and collaborated with them on award-winning products and collections. In addition to its Site Furniture division, the company has created three new business divisions: LED Lighting, which pioneers the design and development of environmentally responsive outdoor lighting; Studio 431, a custom solution division with major projects coast to coast, from parks and campuses to transportation facilities; and Structure, which provides adaptive structural solutions for creating outdoor destinations. The company has expanded its production capabilities; acquired compatible companies, including Kornegay Design, the Phoenix-based maker of high-design, handcrafted concrete planters; and extended its global outreach in sales and design. In its active commitment to the landscape architecture profession and the cultivation of the next generation of leaders, Landscape Forms hosts Roundtables on critical issues in the built environment, organizes and funds Xtreme LA charrettes for young practitioners and students, and supports the Landscape Architecture Foundation as a Leadership Circle benefactor.

Landscape Forms’ Chief Creative Officer, Kirt Martin, explains, “At a time in human history when more people than ever are moving into urban areas and turning to technology, the connection to nature in outdoor spaces is increasingly important, for physical and mental health and for social exchange and cohesion. We believe in the landscape architecture profession and its ability to shape the future and we believe that the solutions we provide really matter. For a current exhibit that envisions the streetscape of tomorrow, the Smithsonian Museum chose to include Landscape Forms’ GO OutdoorTable, a combination communal meeting place, touch-down work space, and technology hub for outdoor environments. To me, our work is about creating new opportunities like this that encourage people to get outdoors, support them in a variety of activities when they’re there, and help landscape architects fulfill their promise of beautiful, high-functioning and sustainable outdoor environments. We’re half a century old and, without question, our best work is yet to come.”

  • Landscape Forms Introduces L I N E Landscape Panels, a New Approach to Site Identity and Boundary
Kalamazoo, MI – May 6, 2019 – Landscape Forms is pleased to introduce L I N E landscape panels, the newest member of its structure category. The timeless, minimalist form of L I N E landscape panels delineates space, provides enclosure, and gives landscape architects a new medium with which to express their unique visions.

“Landscape Forms considers the full spectrum of site elements, encompassing not only furniture and lighting, but also structure,” says Landscape Forms President and CEO Richard Heriford. “Our business model is to become the go-to resource for landscape structure. With LINE, we’re offering landscape architects well-designed and engineered structure elements with the ability to customize panels to create their own.”

L I N E landscape panels are designed by Shane Coen and Coen + Partners, recipients of the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Architecture in 2015 and an Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York in 2009. A signature of Coen + Partners’ projects are minimalist, repetitive, and artful boundary elements. “We create lines and create edges in much of our work,” explains Coen. “We celebrate natural elements by creating geometric, minimal lines running through them. Boundary elements don’t often get the attention other site elements do. With LINE, we set out to design an intentional and timeless part of the entire site design,” says Coen.

“In defining space, landscape architects have had hardscape, greenscape, and furniture as their tool set,” says
Landscape Forms Chief Creative Officer Kirt Martin. “LINE falls between these options, creating boundary and incorporating art into the role of space division. Previous boundary choices have been utilitarian; now we have beautiful panels that delineate and define space.”

The LINE offering includes vertical and horizontal rod and slatted, louvered, perforated, and solid steel panels in 4’ x 6’ and 6’ x 4’ sections with a broad color palette and multiple finish options. Footings, hinges, doors, and locks are included in the standard offering, giving landscape architects a new tool to define space in artful ways. LINE’s design flexibility supports customization of panel patterns and sizes.

Landscape Forms Announces New Corporate Structure and Executive Management Team
Strategy targeted to capturing emerging business opportunities and driving continued growth
Kalamazoo, MI – June 24, 2019 – Landscape Forms, Inc., North America’s premier manufacturer of high design site furniture, structure, accessories, and LED lighting, celebrates its 50th anniversary with a bold strategic plan for driving growth in its site furniture business and promoting expansion in LED lighting and Studio 431 custom services. The Board of Directors of the privately held company has approved the formation of three business divisions within the parent company. Landscape Forms Site Furniture and Structure, Landscape Forms Lighting, and Landscape Forms Studio 431will operate as separate business units, each with its own president and responsibility for production, profitability and growth. Marjorie K. Simmons, an experienced design business executive and member of the Landscape Forms board, has been named Chief Executive Officer of Landscape Forms effective July 1, 2019. She succeeds Richard Heriford, who will assist with the succession and retire on January 1, 2020. Heriford will join the company’s Board of Directors.

The new strategic plan is consistent with Landscape Forms’ history of internal evaluation and evolution to meet changing markets and capture new opportunities. Retiring CEO Richard Heriford explains, “Twenty years ago, I joined the company as part of a new structure that propelled two decades of growth. Now we are once again taking a long view. This is the next step in moving forward.” In the past two decades the company achieved exponential growth of over 500% in annual sales revenue; a steady stream of innovative products created in collaboration with renowned designers including Designworks (a BMW company), Robert A.M. Stern, and Yves Béhar among others; entry into LED Lighting, pioneering the design and development of environmentally responsive outdoor lighting; and the creation of Studio 431, a custom solutions business with major projects coast to coast, from parks and campuses to municipal transportation facilities. The company has expanded its production capabilities, acquired compatible companies, and extended its global outreach in sales and design. Landscape Forms Roundtables for professionals and Xtreme LA charrettes for young practitioners and students have helped establish its reputation as a thought leader.

Bill Main, Chairman of the Landscape Forms Board of Directors explains why this is the time for another strategic move: “We have a growing number of exciting new initiatives for the future and they need a high level of leadership and organizational support. We can’t put all our great ideas through the existing funnel. There’s just not enough capacity. This new structure gives wings to our ideas in a powerful way, increasing our capacity to deliver an array of outdoor space solutions for our customers and create more opportunity for our employees and owners. Our new CEO Margie Simmons is an excellent choice to lead these efforts. She brings proven leadership experience in sophisticated organizations and acquisitions, along with an understanding and appreciation for the unique culture and capabilities of Landscape Forms. And she has a great spirit and boundless energy.”

Marjorie Simmons, Landscape Forms’ fourth CEO since its founding in 1969, continues a company tradition of leadership by people experienced in design. Ms. Simmons served in her most recent capacity as Senior Vice President and Business Leader in the Buildings Group at Stantec, one of the world’s top global design firms. At Landscape Forms, she will lead an executive team that includes Robb Smalldon, President, Landscape Forms Site Furniture and Structure. Smalldon, in over 20 years at Landscape Forms, has held various engineering management positions and, between 2010 and 2018, led exponential growth of the company’s new Studio 431 custom division. Incoming presidents of Lighting and Studio 431 will be announced. Four corporate Vice Presidents will remain in their current roles serving across all business units:  Jodi Havera, Vice President of Finance and CFO; Jim Marshall, Vice President of Culture; Eric Swanson, Vice President of Sales; and Kirt Martin, Vice President of Design and Marketing and Chief Creative Officer (CCO) responsible for the overall look and feel of all product design, marketing, media, branding and work space.

Marjorie Simmons comments on the challenges ahead: “From my first introduction to Landscape Forms, I knew that this was a very special and unique company. Founder John Chipman Sr. laid a strong foundation of creativity, people centricity and craftsmanship that has been maintained over time. It’s not just a thin layer of wonderful on top – the culture, based on those principles, penetrates the entire organization. Landscape Forms has been a company that has had meaningful, significant growth - for the right reasons. A major part of my charge is to continue that success by cultivating entrepreneurial leadership in our three business segments and focusing on more and the right strategic acquisitions for further growth. I believe we have the organizational and financial confidence and resources to make bold moves. The work will require intense communication – not just talking, but listening, learning, and responding with empathy to the people involved. I’m very excited about embarking on the journey together.”

    About Marjorie (Margie) K. Simmons
Ms. Simmons began her career as a CPA at Ernst & Young, went on to become Chief Financial Officer and Director of Business Development for an architectural design firm, and in 1998 co-founded DSA Architects. She led the Michigan operation of SHW Group, worked with her team to establish a Texas higher education division for the firm, and was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of SHW Group in 2010.  Her appointment came at a time when the firm had revenue of nearly $60 million, over 300 employees, 8 offices nationwide, and international projects in Central America, the Middle East and China.  In 2014, SHW Group was acquired by Stantec, a global design firm with 22,000 employees in over 400 locations worldwide. Mr. Smalldon successfully forged Studio 431, Landscape Forms’ custom product division, into the preferred industry partner in branded solutions by building strategic relationships with discriminating clients and delivering value-add performance to venue projects.  He was named to the Landscape Forms Management Team in 2013 and its Executive Team in 2017.

Mr. Smalldon attended Western Michigan University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. In addition to his work at Landscape Forms, he is proud to be a community leader helping to connect creative people and drive collaboration between industry leading companies in southwest Michigan. • Generation 50 Line Celebrates the Past and Future Landscape Forms
Kalamazoo, MI – May 6, 2019 – Celebrating 50 years of designing site solutions for outdoor environments, Landscape Forms introduces Generation 50, a line of benches and litter receptacles that is a modern interpretation of several of the company’s classic designs. Generation 50 is designed by Robert Chipman, who has partnered on a number of award-winning products for Landscape Forms since the early 1990s. Chipman, in another nod to the company’s legacy, is the nephew of John Chipman Sr., the landscape architect who founded Landscape Forms in 1969.

“Robert is our founder’s nephew, but, more importantly, Robert is a landscape architect designing for landscape architects,” says Landscape Forms CEO Richard Heriford. “He knows how they practice and what they value. Getting at the essence of form is the landscape designer’s goal. Generation 50 reflects that thinking in its simplified design and straightforward construction. It’s a new modern classic.”

Generation 50 expresses design features of several benches introduced in Landscape Forms’ earliest wood catalog.  “In a sense, this line represents the second generation of Landscape Forms’ original products,” says Robert Chipman. “We’re connecting our history to our future.”

“Generation 50 takes the best of our classic benches and interprets them in new ways and with new technologies,” says Landscape Forms Chief Creative Officer Kirt Martin. “Today we use sophisticated forms of manufacturing that create precise, detailed products - high-tech converging with the classic beauty of craft and form.”

An angular, diamond-shaped base detail and beveled or curved wood slat edges are common elements among the Generation 50 benches. Generation 50’s many options and universal application and aesthetics fit multiple site designs and uses. Benches with or without backs; in traditional, cantilevered, top-of-wall mounted, and wall-mounted styles; with curved or straight face boards; and available in two arm styles or armless; and litter receptacles, comprise the line. Benches and litter receptacles are constructed of cast aluminum, steel, and wood, including thermally modified ash, a domestically sourced, sustainable material.

  • Landscape Forms Introduces Rai Seating System from Design Partner Santa & Cole Urbidermis
Kalamazoo, MI – July 25, 2019 – Landscape Forms, North America’s leading designer and manufacturer of high-design LED lighting, site furniture, and accessories, is pleased to introduce Rai by design partner Santa and Cole Urbidermis. Renown for high design in the modernist tradition, Santa & Cole Urbidermis has earned numerous awards in Europe for its excellence of design for the urban environment. “Our partnership with Santa & Cole provides Landscape Forms with another avenue of thinking about products for outdoor spaces,” states Landscape Forms President, Richard Heriford. “The Rai system is a simple and clever response to the demand from designers of outdoor spaces for site elements that adapt and endure.”

Inspired by a traditional method of moving logs along a waterway for transport, Rai is a versatile system designed for the current of modern public space. Subtle, rational and intuitive, Rai shapes the flow of outdoor spaces to meet the needs of designers and users alike.

“We defined heights according to use – sitting, leaning, reclining – and a mesh to interrelate the elements, depending on that type of function or program,” state designers Julià Espinàs and Olga Tarrasó.

Rai’s surface beams, made from ultra-high performance concrete MeldStone™, are anchored to anodized aluminum supports, ensuring lasting use without maintenance. Earth tone exposed-aggregate finishes enable the system to blend seamlessly into urban, landscaped, and natural contexts. Rai offers new possibilities to connect and structure outdoor spaces by combining a single surface with three supports at differing heights. Its compositional freedom makes it adaptable to all spaces and programs - from university and corporate campuses, to high-traffic urban environments, to relaxing community spaces.
