  • Do you or your clients love natural stone, but think it’s out of your budget? Think again! When considering the project’s life cycle, stone may be more affordable than you imagine.

    Natural stone draws many admirers due to its beauty and distinctive appearance. No two pieces are exactly the same. It’s often viewed as a luxury material, and a mistaken assumption is that natural stone is too expensive for many projects.

    Because natural is often viewed as cost-prohibitive, one of the most common mistakes we hear is, “We love using stone, but we don’t have a lot of projects that have the budget for it.”

    When we hear a statement like this, we dig a little deeper: “What kind of projects are you working on?” We ask this because natural stone can easily align with the owner’s budget whenever a project is designed for long-term use.

    Mark Dawson, Managing Principal at Sasaki Associates, has found natural stone to be ideal for projects with long intended lifespans.

    “We use granite frequently in our projects because it lasts forever,” said Dawson. “The short-term incremental cost in year one will be offset in year 10 by the durability and the lack of maintenance and repair needed. If a repair is needed, you can lift off the stone and repair it or even get a new piece that could match very closely. Additionally, stairs are hugely important in public spaces. When you use concrete in a cold climate and need to put salt down, the concrete can deteriorate over time. It will take hundreds of years for granite to wear down.”

    The first step in determining whether granite fits in the budget is to understand your project’s goal. A good rule of thumb is: for projects intended to last 20 or more years, natural stone is an efficient material due to its low life-cycle cost.

    Next, consider the space’s intended use. What’s your goal with the space in relation to the surrounding area? Will it have a lot of pedestrian use or serve as a gathering area for people? A resilient surface is a must for walkways and other heavily trafficked spaces. Granite is one of the most durable of all the natural stone varieties and makes an excellent surface for walkways.

    Granite’s durability and low maintenance also enhances its efficient life cycle cost. In Northern climates, material choice is especially important for withstanding freeze-thaw cycles. Granite and certain other natural stones perform well in harsh climates. Carefully consider how long the surface will last in a harsh environment and how the material will be maintained. If a material other than natural stone is used, what will the cost be in 10 years to replace it?

    Durability also comes into play in large urban environments where a building’s base course receives a lot of wear and tear. In cities like New York and Chicago, the base course of buildings receives a lot of abuse due to dirt and grime from vehicles and pedestrians. In these environments, granite is often used as a 5- to 6-foot band around the bottom of a building to protect it from the elements.

    Before eliminating granite or other natural stone as a possible building element, be sure to consider the project’s goals. When you consider all the appropriate factors, you may realize natural stone isn’t as far out of reach as you had imagined. Natural stone, particularly from a supplier with the most advanced capabilities, offers nearly limitless design options as it allows designers to use a classic building product in creative, contemporary applications. One of the most valuable sources for creative designs with natural stone is a collaborative stone supplier that’s willing to partner in the design process, helping project teams realize their design visions.

    Natural stone has long been regarded as the premier choice for durability, ease of maintenance and timeless design, but designers should be careful to remember that not all stone suppliers are created equally. Those that work hand-in-hand with the design team, while offering cutting-edge capabilities, can bring virtually any vision to life.

    Now armed with modern technologies, natural stone suppliers like Coldspring offer numerous capabilities for achieving the design intent. For example, AutoCAD and 3D modeling software allow computer-generated transfer of images and precision. Other technologies include CNC laser-etching, and stencil and film technology.

    With these capabilities, manufacturers can transfer nearly anything from hand sketches to photos onto the stone’s surface. Photographs and other images can be replicated on natural stone with realistic detailing, using sandblasting and carving techniques. Lettering can be carved and enhanced with a color element; the precise replication of ornate elements such as column caps can be created.

    These advances in sandblasting and carving technology allow skilled stone manufacturers to create art in natural stone that would have been thought impossible only decades ago. However, the relationship with the stone manufacturer is critical to a successful installation featuring graphical design elements using sandblast. The right stone manufacturer will enhance the project’s outcome through quality workmanship and a consultative approach through every project phase.

    In the initial consulting phase, design experts from the manufacturer can provide samples and offer advice to guide the team through the process. At the beginning of the project, a stone manufacturer can provide mock-ups or samples to help visualize the design intent. Providing samples before the order is placed will also allow the team to see the provider’s workmanship and capabilities. After the order is placed, sampling helps to refine final details and bring the design to reality.

    Skilled and knowledgeable stone providers will work with the entire team to bring these artistic visions to reality. While cost is always an important consideration, many other factors must be evaluated for a successful outcome.

Please tell us a bit about your company and why you felt it was important to earn this certification. Coldspring was founded in 1898 with a commitment to good stewardship in every aspect of our operations. Today, we serve the architectural, memorial, residential, and industrial markets with all types of natural stone, bronze, and industrial and diamond-tooling products. Our operations include 30 quarries and multiple fabrication facilities, and at every location, we take our commitment to the environment very seriously.

    In recent years, the marketplace has become increasingly environmentally conscious. While leading companies in the natural stone industry have always adhered to environmental best practices, we knew it had become important that we as an industry verify these processes by an outside party. The industry could no longer rely on self-reporting our environmental credibility. In 2006, Coldspring began working alongside others in the stone industry to form a sustainability committee which would later implement the industry’s sustainability standard. The Natural Dimension Stone Sustainability Standard (NSC 373) was an important milestone for the stone industry because it united our efforts in telling our sustainability story through third-party verification. In 2016, Coldspring became the second company to achieve certification when our headquarters, primary manufacturing operations, and three Minnesota-based quarries received certification. Our South Dakota quarry soon followed, achieving certification in 2018.

    2. What have you found most surprising about the process of certifying to the sustainability standard? Because we were already doing most of the things that were being asked, we found that most of the certification process involved providing that information and sharing our plan for improvement. We had already been documenting our processes and plans, but we simply needed to provide it in a modified format based on the intent of the credit language.

    3. What do you feel will be the biggest benefit to your company in securing certification to the sustainability standard? Before the certification, Coldspring relied on self-reporting our best practices in environmental, economic, and social responsibility. We have to move beyond self-reporting. Self-reporting today isn’t as credible as third-party verified programs like those used by other companies and industries (e.g. Forest Stewardship Council-Certified Wood; Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, Environmental Product Declaration). Now that Coldspring is certified, we’re able to tell our sustainability story with credibility. We have a third-party certification to verify our practices, similar to the sustainability standards established in other industries. The architecture and design community has come to expect these disclosures and labels and is looking for them when sourcing products. The trend is heading in this direction for all industries. In addition to providing third-party verification, the Sustainability Standard also makes a statement that our industry is working together to improve our sustainability footprint and contributing to the objectives of the green building programs for materials and resources. We’re doing this as an industry to be able to measure it and improve it. We can have a powerful story if we can show that we are working together. As an industry, we understand our practices well. But outside of our industry, there’s a misperception among designers and consumers about the stone industry’s management of quarry sites and fabrication operations’ use of water, energy, postproduction material, solid waste, and chemicals. Many people still mistakenly believe quarrying stone is similar to mineral or aggregate mining. The marketplace needs to be educated that natural stone is an environmentally responsible product choice, and the Natural Dimension Stone Sustainability Standard helps raise that awareness. When we unite as an industry by telling our sustainability story through certification, we have a strong voice.

    4. How has going through this process helped your company’s bottom line? Our company is founded on the principle of continuous improvement, which is also one of the fundamentals of the standard. When Coldspring achieved certification, we realized we had already optimized energy through efforts such as consolidating our operations and updating equipment. We then began looking for new opportunities to increase efficiency with renewable energy sources. In alignment with NSC 373, we’ve added more than 3,000 solar electric panels that are designed to reduce our energy costs by 11 percent. As electrical costs continue to increase and grid reliability continues to decrease, this investment in solar energy is good for business but also good for the environment.

    5. What would you like to communicate to the design community about this standard? We’d like to raise more awareness in the design community about the standard and that it’s recognized by green building programs such as the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED v.4 (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge (LBC). When designers specify certified stone, they can be certain it aligns with the sustainability goals of their project and contributes to credits in the Material and Resources sections of green building programs. Certified stone has been approved and vetted by third-party verified programs and is one of the many materials designers can select with confidence that the source is sustainable.

    6. How long did it take your company to complete the standard certification? There’s a perception that certification is a drawn-out process, but that’s not the case. Because we were one of the first companies to complete certification, there was a certain amount of learning on both sides that had to be accomplished. Today, there’s more help and guidance available both from NSF as well as through other companies that have certified. Now that more companies have achieved certification, the likely time frame is about three to six months. As Coldspring certifies additional locations and operations, we expect certification to take about three months. It’s important to note that NSF is readily available to help guide companies through the process. With the great guidance of NSF to answer questions, a company could easily complete certifi cation within three to six months. One thing that’s important to mention is that a new version of the standard was published in August. Coldspring was involved in the task group that evaluated the certifi cation requirements and issue papers addressing concerns that came up for companies during the certification process.

    7. What’s the biggest challenge for the industry regarding certification? The architecture and design community wants a variety of options when it comes to sustainable products. As an industry, we need to provide support by offering a diversity of stone options in terms of types of stone and the location of its origin. If more stone companies and quarries achieve certification, we’ll be able to offer the variety of sustainable options that’s desired. As more stone companies become certified, we’re improving the industry’s sustainability footprint and credibly helping position stone as a preferable material to substitutes. Natural stone has always been a sustainable product, but we’ve trailed behind other industries in telling and verifying it. Versus substandard materials, we know that we have the best sustainability story to tell. Certification tells that story in a credible, verified manner.
