 Press Releases

  • Cleveland OH – Jergens new Quick-Loc™ 2 Pallet system boasts an improved design that engages pull studs inside the receiver, plus a hardened coating for long life and durability. The range is compatible with all existing top tooling, ensuring repeatability of 0.0003″ and providing clamping forces of nearly 14,000 lbs.

Used for fixturing horizontal, vertical, and rotary operations, QL2 allows for a wide range of top tooling to be mounted and interchanged on base receivers. Top tooling is located and clamped to a base receiver in a single step when the pull studs are inserted into the receiver and the clamping screw is tightened. The simple and sure process provides fast changeover while holding critical tolerance.

“We’re seeing more and more customers with an assortment of vises and top tooling who need a common platform”, said Mike Antos, Jergens Workholding Product Manager. “The new Quick-Loc uses pull studs and grid patterns, including 52 and 96 millimeter, for machining of multiple workpieces accommodating different top tooling choices, and at the same time provides quick-change”, continued Antos.

QL2 features heavy duty, all steel body – treated with Jergens Mcoat for superior wear resistance and durability even in harsh environments. The system features a floating and opposing clamping wedge assembly (with sealed wedge bodies); an Acme threaded screw for increased strength and long life; O-ring lifters for positive separation of top tooling; and versatile standard mounting options. QL2 is Made in the U.S.A. and has a Jergens patented design.

  • Modern Machine Shop - Jergens 5-Axis Machining

Five-axis machining has built its reputation in the metal manufacturing world through the many advanced machining strategies that are impossible without the additional rotational axes that set it apart. However, many manufacturers have found great benefits in 3+2-axis manufacturing techniques, using the rotational axes to reduce setup time. This approach can provide a firm foundation for highly automated machine cells such as the ones I found at Clippard Manufacturing, a Cincinnati-based valve manufacturer and machine shop.

    Lights-Out Milling

Of course, the long-term goal of the machining cell was to machine parts lights-out. In addition to investing in reliable workholding, the company installed in-process verification systems to detect tool wear and ensure part consistency. “We still need the CMM for paperwork,” Werdman says, but ensuring the machine tool is operating at its best at all times is still necessary for unattended machining.

And did this work pay off? “The Haas proved that five-axis machines were worth it,” Werdman says. “We could get 50 hours a month on the three-axis mills, and with fiveaxis we get 200-300 hours.”

The success of the Haas spurred Clippard to invest further in five-axis machining with a Matsuura MAM72-35V, intended to both increase the volume of parts the company could produce lights-out and improve the precision of its fiveaxis machining.

The Matsuura came standard with a 32-station pallet changer in a condensed footprint, dramatically increasing the capacity for lights-out machining. Like the Haas, it regularly puts in over 200 hours of machining time, mostly performing 3+2-axis machining. It can also pursue more aggressive machining strategies while maintaining the finish needed, as it can maintain a tolerance of ±0.0005 inches.

Despite being one of the major benefits of five-axis machining, this kind of dramatic increase in capacity and production speed is often overlooked by machine shops. Not all fiveaxis machines produce near-net shapes or large contours, and shops like Clippard have found great success thanks to careful consideration of the machine cell as a whole. “The people in charge needed convincing,” Shearer says, “but once they saw how much more we could get done and how quickly we could do it, they were on board.”

  • Jergens inc. introduces new cast iron tooling columns for horizontal machining center productivity

Jergens introduces its newest cast iron tooling columns that offer maximum rigidity. The key to this performance is single piece cast iron construction. These columns are made in the U.S.A., increase horizontal machining potential, and provide a solid basis for custom workholding to suit specific customer needs.

Several mounting options are possible including direct, with center pin locating or edge locating, and also quick-change applications via ZPS with K20 pull studs and 4 module subplate. New column styles include square, cross, and rectangular. The square and cross styles are well suited for high density multi-part fixtures or incorporating multiple operations into a single column.  The cross style allows the added benefit of increased spindle access near the column, eliminating the need for extra-long tools.  The larger upright faces of the rectangular columns are ideal for applications involving larger workpieces.

Column construction uses stress relieved, class 40 cast iron, with the base and sides milled flat, perpendicular, and parallel within .001"/ft. providing an accurate foundation on which to setup workholding devices or quick-change systems. What does this spec translate to for customer use? Other features include a center locating bore, inch, and metric hole patterns, M12 lifting holes for secure hoist ring attachment.

With technical staff support, Jergens tooling columns are customizable as well as easily integrated into full custom design and build projects. Popular patterns and methods include tapped grid, bushed, and tapped grid for modular fixturing applications, or for quick-change, add either Ball Lock® receiver bushings or ZPS modules.
