PEMAMEK - WELDING AND PRODUCTION AUTOMATION

 Press Releases

  • Pemamek LLC, North American subsidiary of Finland-based Pemamek Ltd., is exhibiting its welding automation technology at FABTECH 2021. This is one of the first major industry trade shows to resume as the pandemic restrictions are lifting across the nation. It will be held  September 13 – 16 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. While the company is highlighting all its significant product and software solutions for automated welding applications, there are two areas that are getting the most focus – its laser scanning software for weldments and its dedicated expertise and technology for the offshore wind manufacturing sector.

Named PEMA WeldControl 500, the new laser scanning software for weld seams “reads” the weld groove before the weld and after the weld from two separate angles. In this new laser scanning solution, essentially the operator of the automatic welding system sees a graphical representation of the weld groove geometry on a display screen at any given point in the seam. It can be conveyed in several different ways, such as a groove fill graph. It presents and saves every piece of data, including speeds, fill volumes, temperatures, amperages, and more. The scanning process acquires and stores the geometric, speed, and fill data as the robot welder travels along the seam. Alarms are set to sound or message when the weld goes out of tolerance of whatever parameter ranges are established in advance in the system. The welding operator can then go back and resolve the issue and let the customer know that a repair was made at exactly where, when, and the weld application parameters. Another benefit with this new technology is having remote access to the welding data out in a wind farm or at the power plant or wherever the installation stands or floats. For example, the data can be stored securely in the cloud while the wind tower or ship hull in question has a QR code associated with it that can be scanned by a QR code reader on a smartphone and the specific data can be reviewed.

“Nowadays, it’s all about data,” said Michael Bell, Director of Sales – North America. “This technology not only provides data for each point along the groove, but it is accurate, reliable, and searchable data that is extremely helpful to our customers and their customers, all the way down through the supply chain.”

Additionally, the Pemamek team is ready at FABTECH to discuss many large welding applications in a variety of industries, however a special focus at FABTECH this year is the offshore wind market. The company views this is a growing market and has developed several packaged solutions for the welding of wind tower production. For example, there are displays of its WS Welding Platform, the HFF Horizontal Flange Fitting Station, and Robotic Node welding technology. Wind sector experts are available to share best practices in automatic welding for wind towers and foundational structures.

Offers Custom Welding Solutions for Offshore Wind Monopiles and Floating Platforms

[Mason, OH – August 2021]   Pemamek LLC, North American subsidiary of Finland-based Pemamek Ltd., specializes in modular customized proven automated welding systems for large offshore wind energy platforms. Difficult-to-weld components comprising monopile and floating platform bases can be joined by combining a customized selection of fit up and adaptive robotic welding technologies, rollerbeds, column & booms, and other systems, all controlled by one operator and one powerful software system.

The thick heavy plates found in most monopile and floating platforms must be welded together perfectly lest they lose their strength and ability to hold towers weighing in the thousands of tons. A long stickout tandem head combined with semi-narrow gap SAW welding technique is recommended for plates thicker than 50mm to reduce seam volume and decrease the amount of filler material needed. Pemamek’s 100- to 1200-ton rollerbeds are designed to handle this process, featuring a hydraulic anti-creep function to prevent axial movement during welding. Multiple rollerbeds can be included in the overall welding system, communicating weight shifts via positioners for optimal alignment when joining the top and bottom sections of the monopile. One person controls the entire system using the WeldControl 100 and 500 weld management systems, eliminating the need for multiple welders on one job, cranes to reach tough joints, and creating a safer work environment.

“Welders can preset all welding parameters based on data collected via scanning,” said Michael Bell, Sales Director, Pemamek North America. “Several welds can be performed at the same time by one operator, working from digital measurements taken from the actual workpiece. The guesswork is eliminated and there will be virtually no mistakes with the weld with our adaptive fill technology. This is crucial when joining large plates that will be placed in harsh marine conditions.”

The PEMA Flange Fitting Station can be added to the workshop configuration, enabling fast, safe, and accurate fitting and welding of flanges to wind tower and monopile foundation sections. The FF station is flexible enough to handle many different variations of flange designs and can be integrated with PEMA Column & Boom, which enables welding to be done in the same place, reducing weld time and increasing welding efficiency.

Pemamek provides welding automation technology and integrated manufacturing solutions to a wide range of industries including shipbuilding, alternative energies, heavy fabrication, oil and gas, wind energy and boiler manufacturing. The company offers welding positioners, column and boom units, roller beds and robotic solutions as well as the proprietary PEMA WeldControl operating and control software, among other technologies.

Introduces PEMA Nozzle Welding Solution for Heavy Duty Welding

[Mason, OH – March 25, 2020]  Global welding automation leader Pemamek Oy is introducing its PEMA Nozzle Welding Solution for pressure vessels and other heavy-duty welding applications. By automating the nozzle welding operation, man-hours required for multi-layer welding processes and defects are dramatically reduced.

Built-in lasers scan groove geometry in the workpieces, which typically contain large prepared grooves and thick plates, and automatically create robotic welding programs that adapt to the varying groove layers by continuously welding the grooves until a solid bond is formed. Any discrepancies between the pre-programmed groove geometry and the actual laser-scanned geometry are adjusted using the user-friendly WeldControl software family, which helps streamline the communication between the operator and machinery during welding operations. Production data monitoring, diagnostics, tracking, and robot programming can be performed by one operator on a one-panel control system the shop floor. Operators can also use Pemamek’s Digital Showroom App which allows users to experience how simple the company’s welding rotator, roller beds and assembly station work.

“This nozzle welding solution can shave hours off of the amount of time it would typically take to perform multi-pass welding operations in thick-walled workpieces with irregular grooves,” said Michael Bell, Sales Director, North America. “By combining the accuracy of laser scanning and the seamless transfer of the resulting scan data to the WeldControl software to generate a program specific to that application, robots can more quickly and accurately perform the multi-layer welding passes while the operator moves on to the next project. The dramatic reduction in errors and defects is proof enough that this technology works.”

The entire PEMA Nozzle Welding Station can accommodate workpieces measuring 500mm to 2000mm in diameter, up to 6000mm in length, 100mm to 1000mmm nozzle diameter (30mm without scan function and depending on vessel radius), and 300mm distance between nozzles, and a weight of 15 tons.

Pemamek provides welding automation technology and integrated manufacturing solutions to a wide range of industries including shipbuilding, alternative energies, heavy fabrication, oil and gas, wind energy and boiler manufacturing. The company offers welding positioners, column and boom units, roller beds and robotic solutions as well as the proprietary PEMA WeldControl programming and control software, among other technologies.
