    BOFA International

BOFA International launched in 1987 as a small family business and has developed into a multi-award-winning global leader in portable fume extraction and filtration.

It now employs over 260 people at its headquarters in Poole, Dorset, and in offices in Germany and the USA and exports to 120 countries around the world. Its expertise in providing reliable, high quality portable fume extraction solutions has become well established over the last 33 years and trusted by all sizes of business in a wide cross section of industries including laser, electronics, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, printing, mechanical engineering, dental, medical, pharmaceutical and beauty.

In September 2018, BOFA International was acquired by US-based Donaldson Company, Inc, a global leader in the industrial filtration market, manufacturing filtration systems and parts.

  • From medical visors to components for spacecraft, 3D printing continues to transform our understanding of how things are made. Yet, there is relatively little authoritative industry insight into the by-products of additive manufacturing processes. Research undertaken by BOFA International, a leader in portable fume and dust filtration, underscores how filtration and atmosphere management technology can contribute positively to workplace environmental practices while helping drive productivity.

BOFA helps manufacturers manage their 3D print environments using advanced filtration. The company’s range of portable filtration and atmosphere management systems are tailored to specific processes and provide multi-stage filtration of nanoparticles, particulate, fume and gases. This can help prevent potentially harmful airborne contaminants both entering the work environment and creating a build-up of debris on expensive equipment, which could potentially impact product quality.

“The term ‘3D printing’ covers many additive manufacturing processes but they share a need for effective removal of particulate and fume to help operators meet their obligations under Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations,” said Katrina Clemens, General Manager, BOFA Americas, Inc.

“BOFA’s portable range of extraction units for this sector also helps filter print residue that would otherwise build-up on expensive machinery. In time, this debris could potentially degrade high-value components, affect product quality and impact productivity.”

BOFA has developed a range of solutions for the 3D printing sector, with filter technology and extraction performance matched to specific applications. These products will be on display at the RAPID +TCT 2022 event in Detroit, 17th – 19th May.

It now employs over 260 people at its headquarters in Poole, Dorset, and in offices in Germany and the USA and exports to 120 countries around the world. Its reputation in providing high quality portable fume extraction solutions has become well established over the last 35 years and trusted by all sizes of business in a wide cross section of industries including laser, electronics, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, printing, mechanical engineering, dental, medical, pharmaceutical and beauty.

In September 2018, BOFA International was acquired by US-based Donaldson Company, Inc, a global leader in the industrial filtration market, manufacturing filtration systems and parts.

  • BOFA International has developed a world first innovation in atmosphere management and filtration technology to make the exchange of filters in metal additive manufacturing processes safer, faster and better for productivity.

The stand-alone AM 400 system has a unique filter exchange mechanism to ensure the filters that remove potentially harmful particulate from metal additive manufacturing can be exchanged on-site without risking a thermal event.  BOFA Americas will be showcasing the system at the RAPID + TCT 2022 event taking place in Detroit between 17th & 19th May, where representatives from BOFA will be available at Booth #4022.

Laser powder bed fusion processes used in metal additive manufacturing needs to operate in an inert atmosphere because the materials worked risk inducing a thermal event should they come into contact with oxygen. As a consequence, when filters need to be exchanged in these systems, up until now, equipment has had to be shut down and moved to a safe area for the saturated filters to be replaced by operatives wearing full PPE.

With BOFA’s AM 400 atmosphere management and filtration system, filters are contained within a separate housing with a robust seal, enabling the exchange to be completed quickly and safely without isolating the equipment.

Katrina Clemens, General Manager, BOFA Americas, Inc commented: “This innovation in extraction system design will support the productivity goals of businesses involved in metal additive manufacturing. This production process is used across multiple industry sectors to create high value components and products, and by enabling easier filter exchange, end users could potentially benefit from reduced downtime, meaning improved productivity.”

The AM 400 extraction system has been developed specifically with and for the metal additive manufacturing market, offering high air flow potential up to a maximum flow of 190 cu ft/min and a maximum operating pressure of 250mBar, with low leakage at <30ml/min @ -10mBar.

In addition to enhancing filter exchange efficiency, AM 400 filtration system users will also benefit from patented innovations that optimize filter performance, enabling operators to monitor filter status and coordinate exchanges to match maintenance schedules.

Added Katrina Clemens: “The AM 400 marks a significant advancement in extraction technology for metal additive manufacturing and is an important part of a manufacturer’s overall environmental workplace strategy, while at the same time helping to safeguard product quality and potential value-adding productivity gains.”

The AM 400 will be featured in the BOFA Americas line-up at RAPID + TCT 2022, alongside a new high temperature 3D PrintPRO model (3D PrintPRO HT) and a redesigned 3D PrintPRO 4 system, in addition to its established 3D PrintPRO range and AD Oracle SA iQ.

In September 2018, BOFA International was acquired by US-based Donaldson Company, Inc, a global leader in the industrial filtration market, manufacturing filtration systems and parts.

  • BOFA International has recently enhanced value for the 3D printing and additive manufacturing sector by redesigning and improving its 3D PrintPRO 4 technology, offering wider filtration airflow ranges and expanded filtration capacity.

The company will be showcasing the new technology at the RAPID + TCT 2022 event taking place in Detroit between 17th & 19th May, where representatives from BOFA will be available at Booth #4022.

The enhanced 3D PrintPRO 4 is an industrial machine that is suitable for larger additive manufacturing processes including fused filament fabrication, stereolithography, digital light processing and material jetting.

The upgraded unit has advanced multi-stage gas filtration, with a deeper carbon bed to filter a greater volume of fume, thereby extending filter life and facilitating safer, odorless printing for longer. This is complemented by a larger HEPA filter, enabling multiple 3D printers to be hooked up to a single BOFA unit, optimizing investment in filtration technology to support atmosphere management and help prevent the build-up of particulate residue.

Airflow rates of 175 cu ft/min in the upgraded technology are double that of the original 3D PrintPRO 4, enabling the unit to cater for a greater range of industrial 3D printers, including large format printers.

Operating pressures in BOFA’s new 3D PrintPRO 4 atmosphere management and filtration system have been tripled to 96mBar, allowing the unit to overcome greater system resistance, ensuring effective performance in complex installations and multiple printer architectures. The redesigned 3D technology has been tested to UKCA and CE as well as UL and cUL standards.

Katrina Clemens, General Manager, BOFA Americas, Inc said: “The 3D printing market is evolving at a rapid pace and the enhancements to our 3D PrintPRO range match the industry trend towards faster printing capability and larger build chambers.

“Our filtration system options for this market are improving all the time, underlining our leading position in meeting the needs of companies investing in the benefits of industrial additive manufacturing processes.”
