 Press Releases

  • Jergens introduces its newest cast iron tooling columns that offer maximum rigidity. The key to this performance is single piece cast iron construction. These columns are made in the U.S.A., increase horizontal machining potential, and provide a solid basis for custom workholding to suit specific customer needs.

Several mounting options are possible including direct, with center pin locating or edge locating, and also quick-change applications via ZPS with K20 pull studs and 4 module subplate. New column styles include square, cross, and rectangular. The square and cross styles are well suited for high density multi-part fixtures or incorporating multiple operations into a single column.  The cross style allows the added benefit of increased spindle access near the column, eliminating the need for extra-long tools.  The larger upright faces of the rectangular columns are ideal for applications involving larger workpieces.

Column construction uses stress relieved, class 40 cast iron, with the base and sides milled flat, perpendicular, and parallel within .001"/ft. providing an accurate foundation on which to setup workholding devices or quick-change systems. What does this spec translate to for customer use? Other features include a center locating bore, inch, and metric hole patterns, M12 lifting holes for secure hoist ring attachment.

With technical staff support, Jergens tooling columns are customizable as well as easily integrated into full custom design and build projects. Popular patterns and methods include tapped grid, bushed, and tapped grid for modular fixturing applications, or for quick-change, add either Ball Lock® receiver bushings or ZPS modules.

  • Jergens new Quick-Loc™ 2 Pallet system boasts an improved design that engages pull studs inside the receiver, plus a hardened coating for long life and durability. The range is compatible with all existing top tooling, ensuring repeatability of 0.0003″ and providing clamping forces of nearly 14,000 lbs.

Used for fixturing horizontal, vertical, and rotary operations, QL2 allows for a wide range of top tooling to be mounted and interchanged on base receivers. Top tooling is located and clamped to a base receiver in a single step when the pull studs are inserted into the receiver and the clamping screw is tightened. The simple and sure process provides fast changeover while holding critical tolerance.

“We’re seeing more and more customers with an assortment of vises and top tooling who need a common platform”, said Mike Antos, Jergens Workholding Product Manager. “The new Quick-Loc uses pull studs and grid patterns, including 52 and 96 millimeter, for machining of multiple workpieces accommodating different top tooling choices, and at the same time provides quick-change”, continued Antos.

QL2 features heavy duty, all steel body – treated with Jergens Mcoat for superior wear resistance and durability even in harsh environments. The system features a floating and opposing clamping wedge assembly (with sealed wedge bodies); an Acme threaded screw for increased strength and long life; O-ring lifters for positive separation of top tooling; and versatile standard mounting options. QL2 is Made in the U.S.A. and has a Jergens patented design.

  • Jergens new 5-inch Heavy Duty Machine Vise ensures secure part holding for general applications across the range of CNC machining, including high production. Designed to a relatively small size and weight, the vise is also more easily moved and relocated, speeding up the time in between change overs and reducing operator fatigue.

“Ergonomics and the physical strain that operators face (during repeated and / or heavy lifting) are important issues that we address”, said Joe Farkas, Jergens’ National Sales Manager for Workholding Solutions. “Advancements in engineering and material strength are key considerations for our product design” Farkas continued.

Hardened and moveable jaw plates combat lifting, which can occur during heavier metal removal applications, to help ensure tolerances of ±.0005". Other vise features include the nickel-plated lead screw for long life, needle bearing design that facilitates ease of use even at high clamping force, and a heavy-duty swivel handle to further ease the load for operators. Made in the U.S.A. of stress relieved ductile iron (80,000 psi) and flame hardened, the new vise provides very long usable life and predictable performance.

Accessories for the vise include locating key sets, case hardened steel jaw plates, and a Ball Lock® fixture plate kit for quick change capability. These engineered plates, available in aluminum or steel, have locating slots and tapped mounting holes machined to accept the vise for easy mounting. As with other Jergens quick change workholding products, users can reduce setup times from minutes to seconds.
