  • Award recognizes robotics integrator as “a vital partner” of LM’s Space division

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-- Aerobotix, an AS9100-certified FANUC robotics integrator, announces today that it recently received a special award at a Lockheed Martin supplier conference.

Aerobotix was presented with a 2022 Supplier Recognition Award for Ease of Doing Business. The award describes Aerobotix as “a vital partner” of Lockheed Martin’s Space division.

Headquartered in Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 114,000 people worldwide. LM is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.

Aerobotix has been a Lockheed Martin supplier for the past 17 years, providing robotics and automation support to LM divisions including Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, and Space.

“We’re honored to accept this award from Lockheed Martin as one of their top suppliers,” said Keenan Simmons, Aerobotix senior project engineer. “Aerobotix is known for delivering innovative robotic solutions to the aerospace and defense industries. The Ease of Doing Business Award recognizes that our team is also great to work with, providing outstanding customer support.”

This is the second time in three years that Aerobotix has received a Lockheed Martin Supplier Recognition Award. In 2020, LM’s Missiles and Fire Control division named Aerobotix as an Outstanding Small Business.

“Though we’re technically a small business, Aerobotix takes pride in being able to make a big impact on projects for Lockheed Martin and other global companies,” added Simmons.

  • First public demonstration in North America of revolutionary robotic tool for precision application of masking tape

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Aerobotix and FerRobotics, two leading robotics companies based in the U.S. and Austria respectively, today announced they will exhibit their new Active Taping Kit (ATK) tool at Automate 2023 in Detroit, Michigan, from May 22-25. This will be the first public demonstration of the ATK in North America.

Aerobotix and FerRobotics partnered on the ATK in response to aerospace industry demand for an automated tool for precision application of masking tape. Collaboration between engineers from the two companies led to the development of a revolutionary End of Arm Tooling (EOAT) after months of prototypes and testing.

FerRobotics’ patented Active Compliant Technology (ACT) enables a robot to use varying force when applying tape to an aircraft. The ATK allows for smooth masking on parts varying in shape, putting down perfectly straight tape lines where the customer needs them.

“Customer demand for masking-tape automation was always there, but until now, the technology wasn’t,” said Kent Pfeifer, Aerobotix lead process engineer. “The ATK solution we’ve developed with FerRobotics has the smarts and sensitivity to apply tape repeatably every time.

The ATK features precision control of all individual process parameters – contact force, cutting, and tape consumption. The ready-to-use solution is highly durable and designed to apply various kinds of tapes on any part or surface with exact repeatability. It delivers perfect results without bubbles or wrinkles.

The ATK exceeded expectations for precision and reliability when it underwent testing at Aerobotix’s in-house process laboratory – a facility housing a range of automated systems used to paint, cure, sand and inspect products for aerospace and defense customers.

In November, the ATK was honored as one of only five projects to be nominated for the Econovius, a special prize under the Austrian National Innovation Award. The successful nominees were selected from more than 400 entries. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy presents the ANI Award annually to encourage companies to develop innovative products that contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Aerobotix and FerRobotics will exhibit in Booth 3813 at Automate 2023.

  • Robotics company helped build first collaborative mobile robot for U.S. Air Force maintenance depots

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Aerobotix, a leading robotics integrator for the aerospace and defense industries, announced today that it will demonstrate a new mobile robot at the WESTEC/AeroDef Manufacturing Conference in Long Beach, California, from Nov. 7-9

These will be the first public demonstrations of the robot, which has been specifically designed for the aerospace and defense sector. It can be configured for applications including sanding, painting and inspection. The demonstration robot will perform automated tasks on aerospace components.

“As Aerobotix continues its groundbreaking work in mobile robots, we’re excited to bring this new technology to WESTEC/AeroDef,” said Josh Tuttle, Aerobotix business development manager. “Mobile robots are widely used in general manufacturing and warehousing but are still new to the aerospace and defense industries. They support the ‘factory of the future’ concept and offer significant benefits in labor and cost savings, output quality and worker safety.”

Aerobotix has been a pioneer in the use of mobile robots for aerospace and defense applications, partnering with Compass Techniology Group (CTG) to help build the first collaborative mobile robot for U.S. Air Force maintenance depots.

Developed under the Air Force’s Small Business Innovation Research program, the self-navigating Adaptive Radome Diagnostic System (ARDS) uses microwave signals to non-destructively evaluate aircraft radomes and identify defects such as delamination or water ingress. The ARDS won the top Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Award at the 2021 Defense Manufacturing Conference.

“The new mobile robot we’re demonstrating at WESTEC/AeroDef isn’t self-navigating like the ARDS but could be reconfigured to become self-navigating if the customer has that need,” said Tuttle. “A key strength of mobile robots is that they’re highly configurable and can be rapidly repurposed to serve multiple objectives in multiple locations.”

Aerobotix will offer hourly demonstrations at WESTEC/AeroDef booth No. 3003, on the right-hand side of the AeroDef hall.
