 Press Releases

  • Kays Engineering is shipping their first ever TechniDrill machine since acquiring the domestic gundrill machine manufacturer. After relocating TechniDrill from their original Ohio location to Kays Engineering’s facility in Missouri, the company has been supporting all existing customers with parts, service, and technical support. Now the first TechniDrill gundrilling machine is shipping out to a New York-based company who manufactures airplane aileron actuation cylinders.

The TechniDrill 2.00-30-48 has a gundrilling diameter capacity of 2 inches (50.8 mm) and a maximum gundrilling depth of 48 inches (1219 mm). It features a 30 horsepower AC spindle motor and two-speed gearbox to provide versatile gundrilling performance. The workpiece is counter-rotated via pneumatically operated 3-jaw chucks to increase the accuracy of the gundrilled hole. TechniDrill gundrilling machines are designed and manufactured by Kays Engineering in Marshall, Missouri, USA.

  • The DeHoff 20144 is a custom-designed gundrilling machine used to make components for the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor, the ITER Tokamak. Fusion reactors use extreme heat to fuse atoms together and create massive amounts of energy, while also not creating any radioactive waste nor any carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas emissions.

The DeHoff 20144 is used to perform gundrilling, pull boring, roller burnishing, and thread tapping on the aluminum microwave guides. The microwave guides are long tubes used to heat the plasma fluid inside the Tokamak vacuum chamber to 150 million degrees Celsius, which are the conditions needed for nuclear fusion.

The DeHoff 20144 has a gundrilling diameter capacity of 2 inches (50.8 mm) and a maximum drilling depth of 144 inches (3658 mm). It features custom workpiece fixturing and tooling to perform the gundrilling, pull boring, roller burnishing, and thread tapping operations all on a single machine. DeHoff gundrilling machines are designed and manufactured by Kays Engineering in Marshall, Missouri, USA.

Teledyne Brown Engineering, as the prime on a contract to supply US-ITER, based at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has ordered the DeHoff 20144 to fabricate waveguides for the ITER reactor which will be located in Cadarache, France.

  • The Eldorado M75-30T gundrilling machine now features an option for a servo-driven fixturing assembly. This option allows the machine operator to more quickly load and unload parts from a more ergonomic position.

The M75-30T features a counter-rotation fixturing assembly that grips the tailstock end of the workpiece. It rotates the workpiece in the opposite direction of the gundrill tool rotation, which improves the accuracy of the drilled hole. With the servo-driven option, a Beckhoff servo motor rotates the ballscrew, which provides advance/retract motion for the counter-rotation assembly.

The servo-driven movement of the assembly is an improvement over the previous manual handwheel actuation. Operated with a toggle switch, the servo-driven option is faster, more repeatable, and eliminates repetitive motion for the operator. Safety features include a torque limiter on the servo drive and mechanical limit switches on the slide. These features prevent the operator from crashing the fixturing assembly and damaging the machine.

 Products

  • DeHoff 1024C Gundrilling Machine
The DeHoff 1024C is a custom-designed machine for gundrilling the axles of the all-electric Ford F-150 pickup truck. The machine enables a Tier-1 supplier to produce lighter axles in large volumes for use in the F-150's all-wheel drive electric layout....

  • The 1024C has a 1-inch (25.4 mm) gundrilling capacity and a 24-inch (610 mm) gundrilling depth. It features six gundrilling spindles on a single machine base, and utilizes adjustable tailstocks and hydraulic workpiece clamping. The axles are automatically loaded and unloaded using a lift-and-carry material handling system.
DeHoff machines feature steel box ways and hand-scraped mating components (instead of cheaper linear guide ways and milled surfaces). This results in superior vibration damping, extended tool life, and improved surface finish. DeHoff gundrilling machines are designed and manufactured by Kays Engineering in Marshall, Missouri, USA.

  • TechniDrill BTA Drilling Machine
The TechniDrill TBTA-10-180 is a deep-hole drilling machine using the BTA process (Boring & Trepanning Association). It can drill holes up to 10 inches in diameter from solid using the trepanning process....

  • The machine has applications is both the aerospace and oil & gas industries.

The trepanning process doesn’t drill the entire diameter of the hole, only a ring of material on the periphery. Instead of turning all the removed material into chips, a core is left in the center of the hole. This enables the machine to drill larger diameter holes with less required horsepower.

The TBTA-10-180 is a single spindle machine with 10 inches (254 mm) of trepanning diameter capacity and 180 inches (4,572 mm) of trepanning depth. It has the capability for both a rotating tool and a counter-rotating workpiece, both of which are driven by 100 HP motors.
