Noise dosimeters are used in the workplace to monitor noise exposure throughout an employee's working day. They are particularly useful when workers are mobile, meaning sound exposure is difficult to quantify with a handheld sound level meter. Noise dosimeters are small shoulder-mounted units that can be worn comfortably and record the time history of the noise throughout the day, so high periods of noise exposure can be analyzed. Units like the dBadge2 measure all workplace noise parameters simultaneously to prevent setup errors.

Some of the latest features such as audio recording and motion detection help validate measurements to ensure exposure is correct, and optional features such as octave band measurement can be used for the selection of hearing protection.

Air sampling is used to measure an individual’s exposure to a chemical (e.g. dust or gas) when compared to an exposure limit. Personal air sampling pumps are used with sampling accessories and media (filters and tubes) to collect the substance, which can then be sent to a laboratory for analysis. This will then give an 8-hour exposure value. Real-time dust monitors are also available to give instantaneous dust levels, which will give an idea of when exposure occurred and an indicative level in real-time.

Sound Level Meters are handheld devices, which can be used for workplace noise or environmental surveys. Models are available to measure just the cumulative noise (CEL-620) such as average and peak levels for workplace noise, where octave band (B versions) can be used for the selection of hearing protection. The CEL-630 series features time history storage and parameters for environmental noise (CEL-633) and also has 1/3 octave band analysis (C versions).
