What is a Telemedicine Emergency? It’s when patients are on a video conference with providers but the patient is having a medical crisis, psychiatric crisis, or a critical result. That patient is far away from you, and they need 911 emergency services. But, there’s a problem with 911. When you call 911 you reach your own local dispatcher, not the dispatch where your patient is located. There are over 6,000 911 zones, and only the dispatch zone where your patient is can send first responders. They are not built to talk to each other and they can’t even talk across state lines. 911 is not designed to take written handoff which reduces error and is the medical standard of care in transitions of care. 60-90% of the time, emergency services is activated with escalation and chaos on the provider side. Step 1: Enter the Written request you want to send to 911 dispatchers and EMS. Select the level of Response (Paramedics or EMTs) and select the destination facility. All the written informaiton is documented in your system and 911's system so you can transfer the responsibility, liability, and care to first responders.
Step 2: Find the patient’s location. There are three ways we can do this.
Known Address is the best and standard of care. Get the address of the patient before the visit. We will validate the address against 911 addresses to ensure 911 responders don’t go to a bogus address.
Unknown Address is when a patient does not know the address. You can text ping the patient’s mobile phone for the best address. There are no apps, they just click on their text message.
The most common case is a depressed suicidal truck driver pulled over on the side of the road doing a video visit. In once case a man said “I want to drive on the highway and run into oncoming traffic.” There is NO ADDRESS!. Telemedicine911 uses Latitude Longitude routing to find the correct jurisdiction of the 911 dispatch zone which would handle the handoff transition of care.
Incapacitated patient. This is when the patient is incapacitated because they are passed out or altered. Or, they are incapacitated because they are suicidal and lack the capacity to make decisions (best for psychologists). In this case the PATIENT DOES NOTHING. We enter in the mobile number and our software can get special carrier other information from their mobile phone without the patient needing to do anything. Then we work with 911 to triangulate the patient.
Step 3: You call 911. This happens through the computer you are calling at the same time a video may be running with your patient.
The call will BYPASS other 911 dispatches and go directly to the dispatch where your patient is.
The written request will also be sent to the screens of the same dispatcher which you are talking to.
