 Press Releases

  • For release Friday August 4, 2023 - Annual Conference of the APA, Washington, D.C.:

TeleSage, Inc. is delighted to announce the launch of the groundbreaking SAGE-SR Personality Screener. This trailblazing instrument is the only self-report assessment accessible to the general public that measures the severity of all 10 personality traits as defined by the DSM-5. The report is automated and publicly available, providing instant, clinical grade results in a simple and user-friendly report.

The Personality Screener was developed by an expert panel brought together by researchers at TeleSage. The expert panel was comprised of clinicians representing several research universities as well as individuals who assisted with development of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. This careful work ensured strict adherence to criteria and logic described in the DSM-5. The result is a tool that provides an accurate and in-depth understanding of personality traits.
The newly introduced assessment has undergone preliminary validation relative to DSM-5 criteria. It is comprised of about 140 simple questions that, with the help of extensive branching, can be completed in roughly 10 minutes. This streamlined process makes the SAGE-SR Personality Screener both quick and user-friendly.

The SAGE-SR Personality Screener has tremendous potential for broad clinical use. Its use will help clients understand themselves and enable clinicians to include important personality disorders in their differential diagnoses. In the long term, it will also help identify co-occurring disorders that may alter how care should be provided to achieve the best possible outcomes.

The reports generated by the assessment provide a comprehensive list of symptoms and show the severity of symptoms associated with the ten DSM-5 personality disorders, furnishing a significant tool for both clinicians and patients alike.
TeleSage is committed to driving innovation in the mental health sector, and to increasing efficiency without diminishing the personal connection that forms between clinician and client. The launch of the SAGE-SR Personality Screener reinforces this commitment, as it marks another stride towards making mental health assessment tools more accurate, accessible, and user-friendly. TeleSage wishes to make every minute of clinicians’ face-to-face time with clients as informative as possible.
We look forward to sharing more about the SAGE-SR Personality Screener at the APA conference and invite all attendees to join us to learn more about this exciting development in the field of mental health diagnostics.

  • For release Thursday 8/3/23 — Annual APA Conference, Washington D.C.

TeleSage, a leading provider of mental health assessment tools, has released a revolutionary diagnostic self-assessment and treatment planning tool at the national APA conference. This innovative product combines an automated comprehensive biopsychosocial intake assessment with the scientifically validated SAGE-SR (self-report) diagnostic assessment. The new product is the first to use AI to create a draft narrative chart note covering critical background information, likely diagnoses, as well as a full treatment plan.
The widely used SAGE-SR checks for 30 common DSM-5 mental health and substance use disorders. It is anonymous, scientifically validated, and yields instant clinical reports. The SAGE-SR is used by major research universities nationwide and is trusted by medical professionals for its adaptive, streamlined, and comprehensive assessment capabilities.

TeleSage has created a state-of-the-art self-report biopsychosocial intake assessment to maximize the clinical utility of the SAGE-SR reports. The fully automated, general mental health intake includes comprehensive individual and family background information.
The new AI-based narrative treatment tool takes the capabilities of the SAGE-SR a step further. It integrates the diagnostic information from the SAGE-SR with the comprehensive general mental health intake self-assessment. The integration of information on individual DSM-5 diagnostic criteria with comprehensive individual and family background enables TeleSage to use GPT to create a detailed narrative clinical intake note. The automated note is the first of its kind to include a full narrative clinical treatment plan consistent with the detailed biopsychosocial assessment.

The incorporation of AI technology, specifically GPT-4, enables the creation of a multitude of treatment plans tailored to various diagnoses and unique features of the clinical presentation, marking a new era of customization and precision in the field possible. This pioneering approach guarantees a thorough and precise understanding of the client and their unique presentation. Treatment plans can be customized based on algorithms provided by large provider networks so that the right treatment can be started quickly.
The SAGE-SR system has been developed by clinicians for clinicians. Dr. Benjamin Brodey, alumnus of Harvard Medical School and the Yale Psychiatry Training Program, serves as the CEO and Director of Research at TeleSage. Dr. Brodey established TeleSage in 1996 with a clear and specific objective: to expand access to mental health resources. His extensive experience and commitment to this cause have been instrumental in the development and validation of TeleSage’s innovative tools.

Dr. Brodey explains: “There is a tremendous shortage of mental health providers in the US and there are not enough in training to meet expected demand. We need to be able to use software tools, including AI, to automate those aspects of care that can be automated. This does not mean that clinical care becomes less personal. It means that clinicians don’t need to take short cuts collecting the information that they need to be able to provide high quality care.”
Since clinical utility requires billable products, the system has been designed consistent with CMS CPT 90791. CPT 90791 can be used by psychologists, social workers, and other licensed behavioral health professional to provide ‘psychiatric diagnostic evaluations without medical services’ in 20 to 90 minutes. The SAGE system has been designed to enable clinicians to complete and document their evaluation in just over 20 minutes.
Dr. Brodey has led a team of researchers and programmers, developing and validating the SAGE-SR diagnostic assessment, the new intake assessment and our AI-powered treatment planning system. These efforts have been part of a broader range of research initiatives, which have been supported by over $10 million in grant funding from the National Institutes of Health.

TeleSage is excited to present this innovative product at the APA Conference and looks forward to the positive impact it will have on mental health diagnostics and treatment planning. For more information about the SAGE-SR and our new treatment planning system, please visit www.telesage.com/sagesr. The software being presented is commercially available as of this press release.

  • For release Thursday 8/3/23 — Annual APA Conference, Washington D.C.

TeleSage, a leading provider of mental health assessment tools, has released the NetDISC—the first cloud-based version of the gold standard Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC).

The gold standard DISC rigorously assesses symptoms associated with 37 common DSM-5 child, adolescent, and young adult mental health and substance use disorders. The NetDISC replicates all aspects of the DISC for online use, immediate scoring, and state-of-the-art reports. Children, adolescents, and young adults, as well as their parents, can now complete the highly branched NetDISC diagnostic assessment from home in about 40 minutes using the self-report cloud-based software. Alternatively, an interviewer can use the NetDISC software to administer the assessment to youths and/or their parents in person or via any secure online teleconferencing software platform.

Clinicians receive an immediate report showing all diagnoses for which DSM-5 diagnostic criteria were met, as well as a list of all associated pertinent positive symptoms. TeleSage’s NetDISC reports also enhance the DISC with the ability to compare client responses with parent-reported symptoms. Dual reports place the client-endorsed and parent-reported symptoms side-by-side so that all responses can be compared. Reports can easily be added to the clinical record to document the thorough diagnostic evaluation.

The DISC was first developed with funding from the NIH, and initially released in 1982. Since then, it has been updated for each successive version of the DSM, and it has been cited in over 500 research publications. Dr. Prudence Fisher, a prominent child adolescent researcher and faculty member at Columbia University and at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, developed the most recent update of the DISC for use with DSM-5. Dr. Fisher worked closely with TeleSage staff overseeing the creation of the NetDISC self-report versions.

This shortage is especially acute among individuals licensed to provide mental health services to children and adolescents. We need to empower youths and their parents to collect, even before the first visit, the information that clinicians need to know to provide appropriate care. This does not mean that clinical care becomes less personal. It means that clinicians don’t need to take shortcuts collecting the information that they need to be able to provide high quality care.”
TeleSage is excited to present this innovative product at the APA Conference and looks forward to the positive impact it will have on mental health diagnostics and treatment planning.
