"Butterfly Cluster" is made from Claro walnut with a salt cedar base inlaid with black walnut, Claro walnut, and salt cedar as well as various gems and stones.
As Andy and Jason looked over this piece it became clear the direction they were going to go. “When I first saw the wood in its raw form I saw caterpillars and butterflies,”
The stones used in this piece are ammonites, snakeskin jasper (a red striped stone), bumblebee jasper (a yellow and black calcite), labradorite, mookaite, mother of pearl, various turquoise and azurite-malachite. The main mosaic is meant to invoke the beauty of nature’s butterfly clusters and the subtle wood butterflies alongside the less subtle stone and semiprecious stones are meant to imitate the elusive flight of the creatures.
We were transported by the beauty of this wood and hope to invoke those same feelings with our interpretation of it.
