    imc Test & Measurement GmbH is revolutionizing temperature measurement in high-voltage environments with the new, fiber-optic CAN measurement module imc CANSAS-FBG-T8. It applies specially developed fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBG) at eight optical inputs to measure temperatures in high voltage environments and outputs the results via CAN.

    Users who perform measurements in high-voltage environments or in the field of E-mobility especially benefit from this technology. Thanks to the optical measuring principle it is independent of any electrostatic and electromagnetic influences. Thus all such EMI/ESD related concerns with errors, signal artifacts and even damage, that classical measurement technology used to be plagued with in HV contexts, can now be a thing of the past. The topic of personal safety, which prescribes comprehensive protective measures when working on voltages of more than 50 V, is also clearly reduced: the fiber-optic based sensors have no electrical conductivity whatsoever. This means that there is no need for special safety equipment or particular training of the operating personnel.  Elaborate and expensive high-voltage cable insulation is unnecessary.

    The particularly thin FBG temperature sensors with diameters down to 0.5 mm make installation easier and enable completely new applications. They can, for example, be directly integrated into the windings of an electric motor without significantly influencing its properties. Larger conventional sensors would alter the motors magnetic fields and potentially introduce irregularities or even mechanical noise. The fast response of the fiber-optic sensor can then precisely detect and record the dynamic temperature changes in the windings under load. This is a task that was previously almost impossible to solve with conventional sensor technology (PT100 or thermocouple).

    Kai Gilbert, Managing Director of imc Test & Measurement GmbH, sees further advantages in the simple handling: “Fiber-optic measurement technology has been around for a long time – however, up until now it has hardly been used in the area of testing. This was mainly due to the complicated handling and the lack of integration possibilities. We have now solved this problem with the FBG measurement module. It can be applied immediately with the supplied sensors – just plug it in, enter the characteristics and you're done. The data can be transferred via the CAN interface either directly to a data logger, an application system or to an automation system.”

    And Christian Walther, Key Account Manager at imc Test & Measurement GmbH, adds: “When it comes to fiber-optic measurement technology, many people are expecting excessively high channel prices.     Fiber-optic and electrical measurement technology combined

    The FBG module is electrically and mechanically compatible with the imc CANSASflex series. Users can dock directly to any existing measurement module of the flex series via the integrated click connector. This means that the entire imc portfolio of classic electrical measurement technology is available, too. The intelligent imc BUSDAQflex CAN data logger can also be directly clicked on, thus allowing fiber-optic and electrical measurement modules to be combined into a fully integrated measurement system. A wide variety of measurement, testing and even control applications can be flexibly covered, and a wide range of vehicle and industrial buses can be integrated.

  • Non-contact rotation rate acquisition at the wheel without stator

    Munich, 14 March 2019 – With the new Dx-Speed, a convenient system for non-contact rotation rate acquisition on vehicles, CAEMAX has expanded its Dx sensor system, which won the messtec + sensor masters award in 2018. With the CAEMAX Dx-Speed, wheel slip and aquaplaning can be measured synchronously, precisely and without major effort on all four wheels. Thanks to its innovative technology, the system does not require a stator or an external reference point to measure the rotation rates. The attachment of the sensor to the rim is therefore very easy to manage and takes very little time.

    System for non-contact rotation rate acquisition on vehicles

    The new Dx-Speed system from CAEMAX simplifies the acquisition of rotation rates on vehicle wheels due to its compact design. It is available in different designs and for all wheel types. Because of its innovative hardware and software topology, it requires no mechanical connection and no stator or external reference point. It can be mounted on the rim in just a few minutes. The housing of the CAEMAX Dx-Speed is robust and waterproof. Inside, there is a rotation rate sensor and a lightweight 14g transmitter unit. This includes the complete measurement data acquisition and digitization for up to 6 channels, as well as an integrated radio antenna. The data are transmitted at 200 Hz to the Dx receiver system inside the vehicle.

    Precise measurement results for aquaplaning tests and other testing in harsh environments

    Due to its simple design, the Dx-Speed is very robust and suitable for testing in harsh environments. Both on the test bench and in mobile use in difficult environmental conditions, such as moisture, mud, snow or dust, or when driving over obstacles, the Dx-Speed precisely detects every change in the rotation rate. The accuracy of the CAEMAX Dx-Speed, for example in aquaplaning tests, is typically ≤ 0.5 %. Optionally, the brake disc temperature can also be measured.

    Synchronous acquisition of up to 4 wheels

    The receiver unit of the Dx telemetry system simultaneously detects the rotation rate of up to four wheels, each with a Dx-Speed transmitter unit. The radio link between the transmitter and receiver units is largely approval-free worldwide. In addition to online monitoring of all measured values, the receiver unit can also display and record the temperature, signal strength and power supply of the transmitter unit.

    Via analog outputs and a digital CAN interface, the Dx-Speed system can be easily and quickly integrated into existing measurement systems. This is particularly convenient with imc systems, which can synchronously acquire telemetric data and many other sensor signals as well as field and vehicle buses, and calculate and store them in real time. They also offer modern networking options for transferring measurement data, for example, directly to a cloud.

    The right module for every sensor type:

    MTP-NT telemetry offers two module types for sensors: a universal analog module for voltage, strain gauge (quarter-, half- and full-bridge) and IEPE sensors and a temperature module for measuring thermocouples (Type K and Type J) and PT100/1000. Each sensor module is available in a 2-channel or 4-channel version and is equipped with signal conditioning, antialiasing filters, A/D converters and a digital output.

    Multiple modules, only one controller:

    Up to 128 modules (256 channels) can be controlled with a single MTP-NT controller module. The modules can be placed close to the sensors and connected to each other over longer distances of up to 10 m via interference-free digital outputs. This avoids unwanted noise. The output of the MTP-NT controller is a bit-serial PCM signal that is modulated for wireless transmission and can be transmitted inductively over distances up to 50 mm. It is designed for data rates up to 10 Mbit/s.

    Wireless power supply:

    For permanent installations, e.g., in test benches or production facilities, telemetry often has to work uninterrupted for days or weeks. For this purpose, the MTP telemetry uses a non-contact, inductive power supply. Using a stationary inductive head and a receiver coil on the rotating component, the supply voltage for telemetry is transmitted without contact.

    Wireless transmission:

    Depending on the application, different non-contact transmission links are available, e.g., an inductive coil antenna for distances up to 50 mm and a transmission rate of up to 10 Mbit/s. This allows, for instance, for 32 parallel channels, a signal bandwidth of up to 6,000 Hz and a corresponding 24,000 Hz with eight channels.

    Receiver unit:

    In the MTP-NT receiver unit, all data from the transmitter modules converge. Via an Ethernet interface, the data can be forwarded to a higher-level system. An integrated solution is provided by the imc measurement systems with TELDEC interface, which ensure a time-synchronous acquisition of telemetry and all other sensors and systems connected to the imc system.

    Universal transmitter unit:

    The 14 g light and compact DX transmitter unit contains the complete signal conditioning and digitizing for up to 6 channels, as well as an integrated antenna for radio transmission. The module allows for direct connection of different sensor types. Thus, up to four low-voltage signals such as half-bridge, full-bridge or thermocouples can be connected and transmitted, as well as two voltage signals up to +/- 22.5 V.

    Receiver unit:

    A special feature of DX telemetry is that the receiver unit can acquire data from up to 4 transmitter modules synchronously. This allows up to 24 channels to be acquired and transmitted synchronously. As outputs, the receiver offers an Ethernet and a CAN interface as well as analog outputs. The configuration can be done easily via Ethernet and a standard web-browser.

    Easy installation thanks to shaft housing:

    Frequently, Dx telemetry is used to detect the torque of driven axles. Especially for this application, we offer a divisible shaft housing for quick assembly. This housing protects the strain gauge application and the transmitter electronics, already contains the secondary coil for inductive power supply and can be reused.

    Flexible power supply:

    Several flexible solutions are available for supplying power to the transmitter modules: an inductive head or an inductive ring stator allow continuous operation. Alternatively, the use of various battery variants ensures a secure supply for hours (up to days) – also optionally with UPS.


    A range of useful accessories round off the Dx telemetry product portfolio. In addition to accessories for the wireless supply of telemetry, various housing solutions for shaft and wheel mounting are available. And for optimum reception, you will find a number of different receiver antennas.

    Integrated power measurement:

    Based on the shaft housing, users also have access to an innovative complete system for measuring the power of rotating components: in addition to the torque, the velocity of the shaft is acquired simultaneously and the power is calculated online from these two quantities. Since the sensors for velocity acquisition are completely integrated within the shaft housing, the robust system can detect angles with no additional stator head.

    Innovative steering sensor for modern tests:

    The innovative CLSx steering effort sensor measures torque, steering angle and velocity with high precision. Additionally, it also acquires acceleration in the center of the steering column (x, y and z direction), as well as rotational acceleration. The CLSx sets new standards in the size of the housing as well as in resolution and accuracy of measurement values.

    High-resolution A/D converters with 24 bits ensure especially good signal quality and noise-free results even at small moments below 3 Nm. This is particularly important when testing driver assistance systems and autonomous driving to determine the overpressure torque. Combined with the innovative design of the sensor housing, this results in a highly accurate steering torque measurement of 0.1% FS (at ±100 Nm). The torsional stiffness of the sensor (without adaptation) is 0.025° at 100 Nm.

    Comfortable and quick mounting:

    The CLSx steering effort sensor is mounted between the original steering wheel and the steering column in just a few simple steps. The wiring (LIN bus) of the original wheel is simply routed through the sensor so that all electrical functions and the airbag are retained. With an extremely narrow installation height of 30 mm (without adapter), it extends the steering column only minimally.

    Via the CAEMAX adapter systems, which are manufactured according to the vehicle, the steering sensor can be used on almost all vehicle types available worldwide. The ESP functionality of the vehicle is maintained by optionally available adapters for the ESP angle sensor integrated in the vehicle. With short set-up times and convenient software functions, such as remote zeroing for torque and angle of rotation, the system is test ready in a very short time.

    Patented sensor technology

    The fiber-optic temperature sensors from imc have been specially developed for use with the CAN measurement module. The patented sensor is based on a single-mode optic fiber with an inscribed fiber Bragg grating ("FBG"), which is integrated in a very thin glass capillary housing with a diameter of less than 1 mm. It therefore reacts extremely quickly and can be installed in the smallest of spaces.

    Convenient handling and connection technology

    The FBG sensors from imc are equipped with the robust E2000/APC connector technology. This has an integrated protective cap on the sensor and measuring equipment side, such that the fiber optic is protected against dust and dirt. As soon as the connector is plugged into the socket, the cap opens automatically. A locking mechanism prevents the connector from coming loose accidentally after connection. And if the cable should be too short, then users can extend it at any time by means of a coupling and an optical patch cable.

    Safe measurement in high-voltage environments

    When working at voltages beyond 50V, comprehensive protective measures are mandatory. This also applies to the involved measurement technology, if it is connected electrically. Possible issues with safety at work are substantially alleviated with the fiber-optic measurement technology from imc: The fiber-based sensors have no electrical conductivity whatsoever. Hence, neither safety-related specific equipment nor special training of the operating personnel are necessary. Complex and expensive high voltage rated cable insulations are also unnecessary.

    Clean measurement results despite high-voltage environment

    Particularly users performing measurement in high-voltage environments or in the field of electro-mobility benefit from the robustness of fiber-optic technology. Thanks to the optical measurement principle, this technology is immune to electrostatic and electromagnetic interference, which is frequently a problem when using classic measurement technology in high-voltage environments

    Easy handling thanks to small cable diameters

    While the elaborate and thick high-voltage insulation of electric sensor cables is obsolete, the size of FBG fiber sensor cables is only less than one millimeter in diameter. They therefore require 90% less space than classic high-voltage cables with a diameter of 3-4 mm. An important advantage, particularly for multi-channel measurements with hundreds of sensors. The cable harnesses can be installed more easily and well fit narrow feed-through.

    Measuring inside the windings of electric motors

    The particularly thin FBG temperature sensors (type „xxs“) have a diameter of only 0.5 mm in their active zone. This makes assembly easier and enables completely new applications. For example, the sensors can be directly inserted into the winding of electric motors without altering the properties of the motor (in particular field characteristics) thanks to their small size. The very fast response of the fiber-optic sensor will then allow to precisely record, the heating of the winding under dynamic load conditions, for instance. A task that could formerly hardly be solved with classic sensor technology (PT100 or thermocouple).
