State-of-the-art electrochemical sensors and digital electronics
Electrochemical (EC) gas sensor technology has reached a very mature state and EC sensors with a very high signal stability, low signal drift and long lifetime are considered state-of-the-art. The ES1 series, covering gases such as O2, HCHO (formaldehyde), CO, H2S, NO2 and VOCs, is not only the series of EC sensors with the smallest footprint, it is also the series with the best performance in terms of good manufacturing practice and smallest variations in the output values of the sensor. The sensors based on the ES1 platform are printed on ceramic substrates and the electrolyte is embedded in a solid polymer. It is obvious that these sensors are best candidates for future “full-digital gas sensors” for industrial and air-quality applications. By using the new TB600 16/24-bit digital signal conversion board, Pewatron is one step closer to realizing the perfect digital gas sensor. The combination ES1-TB600 ensures very high resolution output, which is very important for very many applications in the industrial segment and in the measurement of air-quality.
In this newsletter, we present 3 ES1-TB600 combinations for various applications. The combination ES1-O2 + TB600 enables signal resolution measured in a few ppm’s – over the full range of oxygen concentration between 0 and 25 %Vol O2 (250.000 ppmO2). The combination ES1-AG + TB600 is a true all-round air-quality sensor capable of measuring the total VOC content of a gas in combination with other gases such as CO, NO2, H2S and so on. Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a gas that not only needs to be measured, but also controlled for reasons of health and well-being. The concentration level for measurement is in the ppb-range and the combination ES1-HCHO + TB600 enables measurement of formaldehyde gas in the ppb-range.
The TB600 electronics has UART serial digital output (3.3 V level). The serial communication have features for control and read-out of the gas concentration. Read-out of the gas concentration is every 1 second. The TB600 electronics measures only 30 x 20 mm and the height (including the ES1 gas sensor) is < 11 mm. The compactness of the module enable integration of the module directly into an application or limit the space requirements for build-in into an application. The TB600 electronics can also be delivered in either metallic or plastic enclosures for easy integration into existing electronic mounting racks.
