 Press Releases

  • Excelitas Technologies® Corp., a global technology leader delivering innovative, customized photonic solutions, today introduced its enhanced Generation 2 905 nm High-Volume Pulsed Semiconductor Laser Diode. Featuring a multi-layer monolithic chip design, the second-generation 905 nm pulsed laser diode provides higher efficiency (3 W/A) for further ranging and reduced power consumption, as well as an improved GaAs structure to offer typically 85 W pulsed peak power when driven at 30 A for an increase of more than 20% compared to the first-generation product.

An ideal solution for industrial and consumer range finding and LiDAR applications involving time of flight measurements, the enhanced pulsed laser diode design includes an optical emitting area of 225 μm x 10 μm by emission of three laser lines, offering high output power in a small emitting area. The laser chips are fabricated using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) manufactured in a TS 16949 certified high-volume facility. Features and benefits include:

    • Increased output power by more than 20%: customer’s range finder can measure greater distances, or the same distance with reduced power consumption
    • Triple-cavity design: provides three times the level of optical power compared to a single cavity design
    • Plastic TO package: cost-effective solution for high volume applications

“We are pleased to add the Generation 2 905 nm High-Volume Pulsed Semiconductor Laser Diode to our wide range of plastic-packaged pulsed laser diode configurations,” said Denis Boudreau, Product Leader, Detection at Excelitas. “Our technology enhancements make this the highest quality, highest efficiency plastic packaged pulsed laser diode on the market at 905 nm, delivering a robust, cost-effective solution for design engineers working with time of flight measurements for industrial and consumer distance measurement applications.”

Available for purchase now, Generation 2 905 nm High-Volume Pulsed Semiconductor Laser Diodes come standard in a plastic TO package, with future SMD and metal TO iterations available in 2021.

  • Excelitas Technologies® Corp., a global technology leader delivering innovative, customized photonic solutions, today announced its new high speed, large area C30645L-080 and C30662L-200 InGaAs SMD Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs). With high quantum efficiency, high responsivity and low noise in the spectral range between 1000 nm and 1700 nm, Excelitas’ latest high-performance InGaAs APDs are optimized for a wavelength of 1550 nm. The ceramic surface mount package of only 3 x 3 mm² size allows for easy integration into high-volume commercial and industrial applications, including eye-safe laser range finding systems and LiDAR time of flight systems.

C30645L-080 and C30662L-200 InGaAs SMD APD features include:

    • Compact, robust ceramic 3 x 3 mm² SMT package provides a cost-effective option, compatible with robotics pick and place tool, and enables easier integration into various system designs
    • High responsivity gives maximum signal to enable better signal to noise ratio (SNR)
    • Low dark current and noise maximizes SNR
    • Large detection active area of 80 µm and 200 µm facilitates the integration of optics
    • Spectral response of 1000 nm – 1700 nm makes the APDs well suited to commonly available lasers in the 1300 nm – 1600 nm range

“As systems become more and more compact, smaller packages as offered by the C30645L-080 and C30662L-200 become critical to system integration. In addition, as volumes increase and new applications in time of flight are unlocked, more economical, high-volume manufacturing capabilities are also required to meet market needs in this area,” said Denis Boudreau, Product Leader, Photon Detection at Excelitas. “Our new highly compact surface mount InGaAs APDs were designed with this in mind, providing design engineers with a cost-efficient package where filters can be integrated, for the development of a variety of high-volume commercial and industrial applications.”

The package design and assembly processing techniques for the C30645L-080 and C30662L-200 are such that the die positioning is well controlled to the reference surfaces. This aids in the alignment of optical elements to the package and is superior to many of the commercially available plastic lead frame TO packages.

  • Excelitas Technologies® Corp., a global technology leader delivering innovative, customized photonic solutions, today announced its enhanced product family of low-capacitance InGaAs PIN Photodiodes (C30619GH-LC, C30641GH-LC, C30642GH-LC, C30665GH-LC) for commercial and military LiDAR, laser range finding, laser warning and laser spot tracking applications. Providing high quantum efficiency from 800 nm to 1700 nm, Excelitas’ low-capacitance InGaAs PIN Photodiodes feature a special ultra-low capacitance of only half of the standard type capacitance, therefore exhibiting twice the 3 dB bandwidth, high responsivity, high shunt resistance and low dark current.

Prior to this new design modification, users had to minimize the active area in order to maintain the desired bandwidth. Excelitas overcame this challenge by allowing the same larger active area and associated optics to be used. The products’ low capacitance enables extended bandwidth, while maintaining the legacy high shunt resistance, low dark currents and high sensitivity, better than 1% non-linearity, and uniformity within 2% across the detector active area.

Features and benefits of the new photodiodes include:

    • Ultra-low capacitance option, high bandwidth and rise time reduced by half: No tradeoff in responsivity with benefit of detection capability of shorter pulses.
    • High responsivity, low dark current and noise: Gives maximum signal enabling better SNR (signal to noise ratio), a key metric for LiDAR and range finders, as well as very high linearity over a large dynamic range.
    • Active area diameter from 0.5 mm to 5 mm: The larger the active area, the more photons can be captured and the larger the field of view.
    • Spectral response of 800 nm – 1700 nm: Well-suited to commonly available lasers in the 1300 nm – 1600 nm range.
    • Customization capabilities: Available in various, robust TO packages, additional TEC options and multi-element options.

“As lasers continue to use higher pulse repetition rates and ever shorter pulses, OEM and ODM design engineers can benefit significantly from the increased speed of high-performance sensors,” said Eric Desfonds, Senior Product Line Manager, Sensors at Excelitas. “The new design modification of our low-capacitance InGaAs PIN Photodiodes does just that. By maintaining the planar diffused configuration and the resulting much reduced capacitance, with no tradeoff in dark current, noise or responsivity, this product family opens the door to a range of next-generation LiDAR, laser range finding, laser warning and laser spot tracking applications.”

Excelitas’ low-capacitance InGaAs PIN Photodiodes are available in sizes from 0.5 mm to 3 mm, with the ability to be modified to provide quadrant options. For additional information, visit: https://www.excelitas.com/product-category/ingaas-pin-photodiodes.
