 Press Releases

  • Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has announced the expansion of its SCH16T series of high-performance inertial measurement units (IMUs) with the introduction of the SCH16T-K20, targeting industrial, prosumer, and consumer markets worldwide. Designed for OEMs in robotics, drones, and camera systems, as well as IMU module manufacturers and system integrators requiring safety-critical IMUs, the SCH16T-K20 delivers market-leading precision, mechanical robustness, and reliability.

In demanding inertial measurement applications such as dead-reckoning navigation as well as drone and camera stabilization, small measurement errors can accumulate over time leading to unpredictable measurement results. In these applications, key IMU parameters such as noise density, offset bias drift, and vibration rectification ultimately limit the end-application performance and achievable response speed. Murata improves all the key areas with the new SCH16T-K20, which features a brand-new MEMS accelerometer and improved gyroscope temperature calibration.

    The SCH16T-K20 is a 6 axis IMU with a typical gyroscope noise density of 0.0004 (°/s)/√Hz, gyroscope bias instability of 0.3 °/h, and accelerometer noise density as low as 33 µg/√Hz. Like all other SCH16T products, the SCH16T-K20 has a wide operating temperature range from -40 °C to +110 °C, a supply voltage of 3.0–3.6 V, and I/O voltage of 1.7–3.6 V, and a compact size of 0.46 × 0.53 × 0.11 inch (11.8 × 13.4 × 2.9 mm).

The driver behind the SCH16T-K20 accelerometer performance improvement is the brand-new accelerometer MEMS based on Murata’s proven 3D MEMS technology. The new MEMS uses a double-differential measurement principle, familiar from current SCA3400 and legacy SCA103T series sensors. The double differential measurement enables SCH16T-K20’s market leading low noise density, as well as thermal and lifetime stability.

The SCH16T-K20 also includes an enhanced version of the market-leading low-noise SCH16T gyroscope, now tuned specifically for the -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range to enable low offset bias shift across that range. All SCH16T series products are carefully validated with a test set based on AEC-Q100 operating temperature Grade 1 (-40 °C to +125 °C) standards*, ensuring reliable operation over a wide temperature window. The series sensors include market-leading self-diagnostic features, making them suitable for safety-critical applications. Murata’s unique MEMS stands out in the competitive IMU market for its exceptional mechanical resilience to shocks and vibration rectification. The series’ robust design and reliability contribute to longer device lifespans and reduced waste.

The SCH16T-K20 becomes the highest-performing variant in the SCH16T lineup while maintaining pin-to-pin and software compatibility. This compatibility makes integration of different SCH16T variants easy for OEMs and module designers. Mass production of the SCH16T-K20 is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026. Murata will continue developing sensor solutions aligned with evolving market demands, contributing to safer, more sustainable, and higher-performing technologies across industrial and consumer markets.

  • Murata is pleased to introduce two ultra-low power Wi-Fi HaLow™ modules (LBWA0ZZ2HK and LBWA0ZZ2HL) compliant with Sub-1 GHz (S1G) Wi-Fi standards across key regions, achieving high-speed communication over distances of more than 1km. The compact modules support high power at +23dBm (Type 2HK) and low power at +13dBm (Type 2HL) smart IoT applications. They can be used in consumer smart devices, such as connected smart homes and smart accessories, as well as for business and industrial applications, including access control, smart energy solutions, building automation, security cameras, infrastructure management, and medical devices.

“Thanks to Murata’s proprietary high-density packaging technology, the Type 2HK/2HL Wi-Fi HaLow™ modules offer both high power and low power capabilities in a compact, surface mount package,” says Masatomo Hashimoto Director of Communication & Sensor Business Unit, Murata. “By utilizing long-range, high-speed communication for a private network, smart device and smart equipment, manufacturers can change existing Wi-Fi/IP communication solutions to achieve area expansion while reducing radio usage and improving power consumption efficiency, contributing to more sustainable solutions.”

Due to their IP-native standard compliance with no network costs, the Type 2HK/2HL modules reduce the need for repeaters in existing Wi-Fi/IP communication-based solutions, enabling private network area expansion and lowering system costs. Additionally, compared to other low-power, wide-area (LPWA) network technologies, the long-range, high-speed communication of the modules can facilitate image and video transmission. This enhanced communication capability can be used for IoT deployments to inspect and maintain infrastructure and hazardous areas outside of cellular coverage, enabling automation with significant energy and cost savings.

Based on the NRC7394 chipset from NEWRACOM,Inc. with Arm® Cortex® -M3 processor the Type 2HK/2HL modules offer enough processing power to accommodate the Wi-Fi subsystem and user applications. The Type 2HK module operates at frequencies from 902MHz to 928MHz, whereas the Type 2HL is at 750MHz to 950MHz. Both modules feature an SPI host interface with peripherals including SPI, 2x UART, 2x I2C, 2-channel 10-bit ADC and GPIO.

Dr. Sok Kyu Lee, CEO and Chairman of NEWRACOM, explains “the NRC7394 chipset represents the future of Wi-Fi for IoT applications, with low power consumption and extended range capabilities. By integrating our technology into Murata's new module, we are providing a powerful platform for a wide range of industries to implement reliable, efficient wireless communication. We look forward to seeing how this module will help accelerate the adoption of next-generation IoT solutions across the globe."

Housed in a surface-mount LGA package with solder bumps, the modules typically measure 19mm by 13.9mm, have a maximum profile of 2.5mm, and operate in a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.

Murata will continue to adapt to the latest standards and work on cost reduction, contributing to the further expansion of the IoT market. For more information on the Type 2HK/2HL Wi-Fi HaLow™ module, please visit: LBWA0ZZ2HK and LBWA0ZZ2HL

  • Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd has commenced mass production of its MRMS166R and MRMS168R anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors for healthcare, wearable, and IoT devices. The MRMS166R is the first AMR sensor to combine an average current consumption of 20nA with operation from a 1.2 V supply, enabling extended battery life in coin cell-powered systems.

The devices are solid-state magnetic sensors used for switching applications. They detect the presence or absence of a magnetic field and generate an output signal that system logic uses to control functions such as transitions between active and sleep modes. This enables contactless switching without mechanical components, improving reliability, and supporting sealed, miniaturized designs.

Automatic switching between active and sleep modes is widely used in battery-powered devices to reduce standby power consumption and extend operating life. In healthcare, applications include capsule endoscopes and medical patches. Wearable devices, including AR glasses and wireless earbuds, as well as security-related IoT devices, such as door open/close detection systems and smart locks, also use this functionality.

These devices commonly use silver oxide coin batteries (typically 1.55 V), which impose constraints on both available capacity and operating voltage. AMR sensors used as magnetic switches must therefore minimize current consumption while maintaining stable operation at low voltage. Murata addressed these requirements through a redesign of the AMR sensor’s internal circuitry, enabling ultra-low current consumption and reliable operation down to 1.2 V. This significantly reduces battery consumption during standby operation, supporting device operation for more than two years in typical use.

Both devices are housed in a compact package measuring 1.0 × 1.0 × 0.4 mm (0.04 × 0.04 × 0.02 inches), making them suitable for space-constrained designs. The MRMS166R operates over a 1.2 to 3.6 V supply range (1.5 V typ.) with an average current consumption of 20 nA and a maximum current output of 1 mA. The MRMS168R operates over a 2.0 to 3.6 V supply range (3.0 V typ.), with an average current consumption of 80 nA and a maximum output current of 12 mA, providing higher output drive capability for devices requiring increased load current.

Murata will continue to expand its AMR sensor lineup and reduce power consumption to support longer operating times and enhanced functionality in medical, wearable, and IoT devices.
