The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the six armed forces of the United States and the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Since 1790, the Coast Guard has safeguarded our nation’s maritime interests and environment as a federal law enforcement agency, humanitarian first responder, and military force. To support these missions, our members have a range of specialties, including health services, engineering, environmental science, culinary, electronics, and more.
In times of peace, the Coast Guard operates as part of DHS, enforcing laws at sea, protecting our environment, guarding our coastline and ports, and performing vital life-saving missions. In times of war or at the direction of the President, the Coast Guard defends our nation under the Department of Defense.
