The 4D InSpec Surface Gauge is the first handheld, precision instrument for non-contact measurement of surface features and defects. With micrometer-level resolution, portability, affordability and ease-of-use, the 4D InSpec brings high resolution 3D measurement to the factory floor, and in machine shops and in field service applications. Measure pits, scratches, nicks, dents, bumps, rivet depth, dot peen depth, etc., from 0.0002” to 0.1” (5 µm–2.5 mm) deep or tall. The 4D InSpec is far more repeatable and accurate than visual comparison techniques typically used for surface defect measurement. Unlike high-end metrology systems it is rugged, flexible and affordable, to measure features on a wide range of part geometries, in the most challenging environments.

    The 4D InSpec employs patented technology which enables rapid measurements that are unaffected by vibration and noise. For the first time, QA/QC personnel using the 4D InSpec can take repeatable, high resolution surface measurements in factory floor, machine shop and field service environments.

    Inspectors in the manufacturing and refurbishing of turbine blades, aircraft engine parts and other critical components need to gauge the severity of damage, wear and corrosion.

    Until now, inspectors have typically relied upon visual comparison to determine the severity of these defects. This method, however, is neither precise nor repeatable, which can result in missed defects and, more frequently, costly rejection of parts that actually meet specifications. High resolution surface metrology systems are available and can provide more reliable data; however, these systems are too expensive, slow and susceptible to environmental factors for use on the shop floor.

    The 4D InSpec Surface Gauge fundamentally changes precision surface measurement by enabling direct inspection of defects and fine features, on the shop floor. Rugged and lightweight, the handheld gauge is designed to handle the rigors of daily use. The system measures surface defects between 0.1 and 100 mils (2.5 to 2500 micrometers) deep/tall on a wide variety of part geometries. Its unique design makes it easy to access tight corners or reach across large surfaces. Fold mirror attachments enable borescope-like access to features without direct line of sight.

    The 4D InSpec features an intuitive, touchscreen interface for setup, operation, analysis and report generation. Its easy-to-use software automatically locates critical features and calculates height, volume, area, slopes and location. Operators can view 2D or 3D plots and review feature parameters in tabular form. Reporting and data sharing with other software and factory automation are quick and simple.

    4D will demonstrate the 4D InSpec Surface Gauge at AeroDef Manufacturing in Booth 761. Attendees are encouraged to bring samples to the booth to see how the 4D InSpec can greatly improve inspection speed, accuracy and ease.
