Formdrill manufactures thermal drill bits, Formdrills, which help you Form your Own Inserts in thin materials. These formed inserts cost about 1 cent (US) to drill and tap and it takes seconds to do it - in your own equipment! Formdrills use frictional heat to soften the material, form the hole and push through the displaced material to form a bushing that triples the original material thickness. These bushings, with the expanded wall, can then be tapped to avoid the use of welded nuts or inserts and eliminate welding time. Resulting joints will be as strong, or stronger than the equivalent welded nut. Formdrills can be used in most drill presses, milling machines or CNC systems. We will provide you the required equipment parameters. Compare the 1 cent cost per hole to your current method. Compare the seconds to do it to the labor and time required to use your current method. Formdrill       Booth 2068

Friction drilling by Formdrill is an easy and cost-effective application to join thin-walled materials and avoid costly weld nuts or inserts.  Our drill bits are used to make a hole and create a bushing out of the parent material which increases the area available for tapping.

Our tools work with standard equipment like drill presses, milling machines or CNCs.  This process is usable in most malleable materials such as mild and stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass and other high strength alloys.

Although this may look like new science, it is a proven technology that has been around for over 40 years and is used throughout the auto, furniture, medical, HVAC and other manufacturing industries.

  • Magnetic Drill for Friction Drilling
New magnetic drill for friction drilling!
Typical hand drills are not suited for the process as they are unstable and don't have the spindle speed or motor power....

  • Manufactured to the highest quality standards, this is a portable drill that can do Formdrilling up to 0.120" wall and 7/16 UNC or 1/8 NPT.  It runs at 2,800 RPM - 1,600 W (2.1 HP).  The drill can be purchased as a kit, which includes a heat dissipating tool holder, base plate and vise.
