  Our Story

  Initially working in a small family-run welding & engineering supplies business we received a stream of requests for specialist metal drilling tools that didn't exist no matter where we looked.

  As we investigated further we discovered that drilling or modifying steel connection holes when limited to the use of portable or hand-held tools seemed to be the biggest pain point in the industry. These challenges would often contribute to missed deadlines and painful project over-runs. If specifications changed at the last minute, fabrication errors were made or emergency repairs were needed, the tools needed to get the job done quickly just didn’t exist in the marketplace.

  The industry needed a solution so in response we formed Holemaker Technology with one aim in mind: To speed up metalworking through cutting tool innovation.

  8 years, around 500,000 tools and a patent or two later, these game-changing products are now sold widely in over 50 countries around the world.

  WHY IMPACT?

• HMT chosen to support British Antarctic Survey’s modernisation work at Rothera Research Station (Aug 08, 2022)

  Holemaker Technology are delighted to have been chosen once again to support the ongoing construction and modernisation work of the British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research station.

  This huge, 7-10 year, £200m project began in 2016 with a 2 year planning and preparation program before officially commencing with the deconstruction and replacement of the 27 year old Biscoe Wharf in late 2018.

  Successfully excavating, cutting, drilling and removing the wharf’s old steel frame required selecting tools and equipment that could withstand and operate in some the harshest conditions in the world.

  Antarctica boasts the driest, coldest and windiest climate on the planet and with much of the drilling work required also occurring within the splash zone of the nearby ocean conventional magnet drills would have been unsuitable for the task. HMT were consequently tasked with designing, custom building and supplying a system capable of handling the job.

  A system using switched permanent magnets and a compact hydraulic motor with a remote engine driven power source was developed and tested. Capable of cutting holes up to 105mm diameter and 60mm deep on flat and curved surfaces as standard this equipment was quickly adopted as the go-to option for the project and shipped the 11,000km to Antarctica.

  10 months on and with the first phase successfully completed the operation of HMT’s bespoke solution is clear as the project’s construction partners expand their fleet of HMT tools and machinery to meet the demands of the next phase of construction.

  This new challenge will see work continue on the construction of the new 74 metre long Rothera Wharf.

  Intended as a berth for the 129m long polar research vessel, RRS Sir David Attenborough, the new dock will serve as a multi-faceted arrival and departure point servicing the whole scientific community at Rothera.

  Q: Who are you and what do you do?

  A: My name is Tim O’Roark and I am the US sales rep. I live in the great state of Texas and cover about a 9 state region.

  Q: Why did you join HMT?

  A: I joined HMT due to the innovative tooling that has never been seen before in the US marketplace. I have never seen tools in my almost 30 year career similar to the tools that HMT makes.

  Q: What’s different about working for HMT?

  A: The way that they are going to market. They are not trying to be a ‘me too’ company, providing other tools and services, but to be truly innovative and different in their approach from start to finish.

  Q: What do you enjoy about working for HMT?

  A: One of the most enjoyable things for me is turning on an entirely new product to a market that is crying out for these type of tools.

  A: The Impact Taps. Being a cutting tool guy for most of my career, the fact that you can tap a big, deep thread with an impact tool is something that I have never seen before. I think it’s completely unique.

  New to the US market, the VersaDrive range of metal cutting and drilling tools features products for creating, enlarging, tapping and countersinking holes in metal with the use of portable, hand held powertools like impact wrenches and cordless drills.

  Listed below is a brief overview of the products in the range and their key benefits:

  VersaDrive ImpactaStep:

  A unique impact and rotary rated stepped drilling and reaming tool that features 5 cutting diameters on one tool and can be used for both hole creation and enlarging in steel up to ½” thick.

  VersaDrive Step Drill:

  The first step drill on the market optimised for use with impact wrenches and impact drivers, allowing you to create holes in seconds in material up to 1/5” thick.

  The specialist ULTRA coating is proven to significantly increase tool life, making ULTRA products the perfect solution in situations requiring high performance durability, prolonged use or machining extremely hard materials.

  MACHINING WEAR PLATE

  The extreme hardness and resistance of wear plate makes machining it extremely challenging. Good results are dependent on the right setup - including high torque/slow speed, geared Magnet Drills, like the VersaDrive Series, and ample lubrication - BioCut Blue cutting fluid when broaching or Speedlube Aerosol spray when countersinking.

  Using an incorrect or poorly maintained Magnet drill with unstable drilling operation, poor magnet hold, excessive pressure or inadequate lubrication is likely to result in rapid tool failure.

  Even with high tech tooling, successfully machining Wear plates is challenging with little or no margin for error. It not only requires the correct setup but also experienced operators with the time necessary to proceed with caution.
