The HPG-R Two Stage Helical Harmonic Planetary® gearhead delivers High-Torque and High-Accuracy in a compact package. The Helical gear design combines quiet operation with higher torque when compared to the standard HPG Series. The gearhead incorporates continuous backlash compensation that ensures low backlash throughout the life of the gear. A large Cross Roller bearing serves as the output flange and can directly support large loads with high moment stiffness.

Continuous Backlash Compensation
Harmonic Drive's expertise in the field of elasto-mechanics of metals is applied to the internal gear of the HPG, HPGP and HPF Series to provide the gearhead with continuous backlash compensation.
Planetary gears have simultaneous meshing between the sun gear and planet gears and between the planet gears and the internal gear. Some manufacturers try to reduce the backlash of the gearhead by controlling the dimensional precision of the parts, however this causes interference of meshing parts due to dimensional errors, resulting in uneven input torque and noise. The backlash increases over time as gear wear takes place due to this interference.
A special design of the HPG, HPGP and HPF internal gear allows a preload of the gear (on the order of microns) and enables it to slightly deform elastically thus maintaining low backlash for the life of the gearhead, without any need for adjustment. This preload not only minimizes backlash but also compensates for interference between meshing parts. The result is low backlash for the life of the gear, without any "backlash creep".
