 Press Releases

  • Miami, FL, August 2, 2023: As an organization that recognizes the importance of developing the next generation of welding professionals, the American Welding Society announced today that it's making its student membership complimentary.

“The complimentary student membership is part of the Society’s strategy of supporting the younger generation in the earliest stages of their careers,” said Cassie Burrell, Senior VP, Marketing & Membership Development. “AWS boasts a large portfolio of offerings that will resonate with young people, helping to build a bridge from student to early career to professional membership.”

For decades, the annual dues for the student membership were $15. Now, students can obtain a complimentary membership for four years and maintain the same benefits. These include free digital access to the Welding Journal, discounts on publications and educational offerings, and access to the ever-popular Member Network, including a student community.

“The complimentary student membership will introduce young people to a vast library of AWS resources and services designed to enhance their education outside the classroom, from scholarships through the AWS Foundation to networking opportunities at local AWS Student Chapter and Section events,” added Burrell. “We’re looking forward to welcoming student members and for them to find career and real-life opportunities they may not have discovered otherwise.”

Students looking to elevate their education can apply online at aws.org/membership. They’ll then receive their member ID, giving them instant access to their member benefits."

  • Miami, FL, October 5, 2023:

On August 24, 2023, the American Welding Society Board of Directors voted unanimously to install Michael A. Krupnicki as AWS President for the remainder of 2023 and throughout 2024. The decision was made pursuant to the untimely death of President Dennis K. Eck in August, 2023.

“Mr. Eck’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to our organization were invaluable,” commented Mr. Krupnicki. “His presence will be deeply missed. We ask that the welding community continue to keep the Eck family in their thoughts and prayers.”

Mr. Krupnicki has been involved in American Welding Society leadership for close to 40 years, starting as a Board Member of the AWS Rochester Section and holding increasing roles and responsibilities, including District 6 Director from 2015 to 2020. He has been a member of the AWS Foundation Grants Committee, Districts Council, Communications Council and Standards Council. In 2015, Krupnicki became a member of the AWS Board of Directors and was elected in 2018 to serve as Vice President beginning in 2020. He has been published in the Welding Journal and other industry publications. In 2016, his welding school, Rochester Arc + Flame Center, was presented with the WEMCO Excellence in Welding Award in the Educational Facility category.

“The focus of my presidency will be to Enhance the Volunteer Experience,” said Krupnicki. “Volunteers are the engine of our Society - the people that make the AWS thrive. I will work with the Board and our staff to ensure a rewarding, enjoyable and relevant experience for our dedicated volunteers.”

Krupnicki is a lifelong member of the welding community, beginning his career in his father’s welding supply business at age 18. While working he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at St. John University and his MBA at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Krupnicki grew the family business and also founded a cryogenics distribution company. He has since sold both businesses to concentrate on his passion for educating the next generation of welders.

He accomplishes this as an adjunct professor of business and engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as being the owner and founder of the Rochester Arc + Flame Center, a private welding school that provides vocational and professional training in welding, metal smithing, and the glass arts and offers courses to the public and local colleges.

Mr. Krupnicki strongly believes in giving back both to his local community and to the industry that supported him throughout his career. He donates his personal time, expertise, services and money to numerous charities, and his school provides free seminars, supplies, and mentoring to high school robotics teams, college SAE engineering clubs, Scouts and at-risk young people.
