  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, December 1, 2016 – Beckhoff Automation has announced the direct integration of OPC UA Pub/Sub UDP communication into the company’s TwinCAT 3 software runtime. This paves the way for the straightforward configuration of OPC UA publishers and subscribers, as well as real-time data exchange.

    A new extension of the OPC UA specification, which Beckhoff played a prominent role in helping develop within the OPC Foundation, introduces the publisher/subscriber principle into the established and standardized OPC UA communication protocol. Through the early integration of the Pub/Sub UDP extension, Beckhoff has emerged once again as an early adopter of OPC technologies.

    One particular advantage is the much simplified configuration that results from direct integration into the TwinCAT 3 engineering environment from Beckhoff. Communication is initiated directly from the TwinCAT 3 runtime, which creates a deterministic and therefore real-time-capable communication channel via OPC UA.

    Advantages of publisher/subscriber communication
    Conventional client/server applications are decoupled from one another in publisher/subscriber-based data communication and no longer need to "know" each other. The publisher simply sends its data, as a UDP multicast in this case, to a multicast group. The subscribers receive the data by subscribing to the multicast group instead of the actual device.

    These advantages can be utilized in all areas of machine design, plant engineering and building automation technology. This is especially true in M2M scenarios within machine networks, for example, in small manufacturing systems as well as complex machines and buildings.

    According to the current roadmap for the OPC UA specification, this extension is expected to be finalized by the OPC Foundation in early 2017. Accordingly, Beckhoff plans a timely product release to accommodate the extension in TwinCAT 3 automation software.

  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, May 5, 2016 – EJ-series EtherCAT plug-in I/O modules provide an efficient wiring solution for machines built in large and medium-sized production runs. With new EJ7xxx motion modules, space-saving compact drive technology from Beckhoff is seamlessly integrated into a plug-in module concept, enabling extremely compact I/O and motion solutions that perfectly match customer requirements. These include modules for servo, stepper and DC motor types.

    EJ-series plug-in modules from Beckhoff make it easy to implement a platform concept for large-volume production runs without sacrificing customization capabilities. The modules, with electronics based on the popular EtherCAT I/O system, are directly inserted into an application-specific signal distribution board that transmits signals and power to the individual connectors. Connections via pre-configured cable harnesses replace the expensive installation of individual wires, reducing per-unit costs and minimizing the risk of faulty wiring because the EJ components are clearly coded.

    Compact drive technology in a new format

    Already available in a Bus Terminal I/O form factor for years, compact drive technology is now also available from Beckhoff as a plug-in I/O module concept. In combination with a broad portfolio of Beckhoff motors and planetary gear units, three new EJ7xxx EtherCAT plug-in modules now enable especially compact and cost-effective drive solutions.

    The EJ7047 stepper motor module was designed for applications in the medium performance range. The device features two inputs for limit switches; the second input can alternatively be configured by the user as an output. This makes it possible to install a holding brake, for example. In conjunction with stepper motors from the Beckhoff AS10xx series, the user can optionally implement vector control, delivering enhanced motion dynamics and reduced power consumption.

    The EJ7211-0010 servomotor module features high performance in an exceptionally compact design. This is, in large part, enabled by the integrated One Cable Technology (OCT), which combines the motor cable and an absolute feedback system into a single cable. The EtherCAT plug-in module seamlessly integrates with motors from the Beckhoff AM8100 series, offering output current up to 4.5 ARMS. Since the system reads the identification plate of the AM81xx motors electronically, wiring and commissioning efforts are minimized. The fast control technology, based on a field-oriented current and PI speed control system, is suitable for demanding, highly dynamic positioning tasks.

    The EJ7342 2-channel DC motor output stage is designed for direct operation of two DC motors, and offers galvanic isolation from the E-bus. Speed and position are set by the automation device via a 16-bit value, so a simple servo axis can be implemented by connecting an incremental encoder.

    For highly dynamic applications and when feeding multiple axes via a single power supply, integration of the EJ9576 brake chopper module is recommended. This protects the system against damage from overvoltage by absorbing part of the energy. If the voltage exceeds the terminal's capacity, it discharges excess energy via a separate external resistor.

  • SAVAGE, Minnesota, July 20, 2016 – With the EtherCAT P solution, Beckhoff combines ultra-fast EtherCAT communication and power supply in a standard 4-wire Ethernet cable. This enables direct power supply for both EtherCAT P slaves and the connected sensors and actuators in such a way that separate power lines can be eliminated, considerably simplifying system cabling. This makes EtherCAT P the ideal sensor, actuator and measurement bus, providing advantages both for connecting small remote I/O stations in terminal boxes and for decentralized I/O components located throughout the process.

    EtherCAT P Box modules for all data acquisition requirements

    A full range of EtherCAT P system and I/O components in protection class IP 67 and 4-wire Ethernet cables is currently available for the 24 V I/O level. The power supply from EtherCAT P is rated at 2x 24 V DC/3A. For connecting sensors and actuators with power supply, users can integrate any of the wide range of well-established EP Box modules from Beckhoff in the new EPP versions for EtherCAT P. These include a variety of 4, 8 and 16-channel digital input box modules; 4, 8, 16 and 24-channel digital output modules; numerous 4, 8 and 16-channel IP 67 I/Os with combined digital inputs/outputs; as well as RS232 and RS422/RS485 serial interfaces. There are also new EPP Box modules for analog input and output quantities, such as ±10V/0...20 mA, differential/absolute pressures, and data from resistance sensors, thermocouples and incremental encoders.

    Free and flexible choice of topology, as enabled by EtherCAT, is equally possible with EtherCAT P. The following IP 67 infrastructure components are available to set up the required network architecture in the field:

    –   EPP1111 EtherCAT P Box with ID switch

    –   EPP1322 EtherCAT P junction with power feed-in and junctions with or without power refresh (EPP1332/EPP1342)

    –   EPP9001 EtherCAT P/EtherCAT connector with power transmission

    –   EPP9022 EtherCAT P Box for diagnosing Us (system and sensor supply) and Up (peripheral voltage for actuators)

    Significant benefits for machine engineering applications

    EtherCAT P – which is now fully supported by the EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) – reduces material costs for machinery, time and cost of installation as well as the frequency of errors in the installation process. In the machine itself it also minimizes the installation space required for drag chains, cable trays and control cabinets. The entire automation process benefits from the reduced size of sensors or actuators, made possible by the new EtherCAT P cables. Overall, equipment manufacturers now have considerably more freedom when designing their machinery and more leverage to reduce machine footprint.
