  • A major issue in metalforming industries is weld slag, spatter, resin, smoke, oil and dampering adhesive buildup on weld line equipment. This causes misalignment and can prevent the proximity switch from firing in the appropriate spot. When this happens, the robot stops welding or welds incorrectly, creating scrap and causing equipment failure and costly production downtime.

    Typical manual cleaning methods such as wire brushes, scrapers and air chisels require shutdown, disassembly, unproductive hours of messy – and abrasive – hand cleaning and then time-consuming reassembly and startup. Most traditional cleaning methods are not fully effective and often result in damage to the tooling, part or equipment. Manual cleaning is also extremely labor intensive and potentially harmful to the workers.

    Cold Jet dry ice cleaning provides an effective, non-destructive, environmentally responsible removal solution for slag and spatter buildup.  The dry ice blast cleaning process is similar in concept to sand or soda blasting, where the respective media is accelerated through a pressurized airstream. The main difference is that Cold Jet’s system uses recycled CO2 in the form of dry ice MicroParticles to clean and prepare surfaces. The dry, non-conductive CO2 MicroParticles are accelerated at supersonic speeds through a specialized hose and nozzle.  Once the MicroParticles strike the surface, the effect of the combination of kinetic energy transfer, thermal shock and gas expansion breaks the bond between the substrate and the contaminant and flushes the contaminant away.  Also, upon impact with the surface, the dry ice MicroParticles sublimate, leaving no secondary waste or residue.

    Dry ice cleaning eliminates equipment damage, maximizes tooling life, reduces scrap product and allows for complete zero-contact cleaning so that production time can be maximized and touch-up cleanings are safe and easy.  Dry ice cleaning can be used when cleaning robot joints, transfer cases, shuttle jigs, diamond plates, trunnions, weld tables, fixtures and even paint and e-coat lines.
