  • Haven dual-blade shear cutoffs are prevalent in the automotive brake and fuel line industry.  There are two models to choose from; Model #801 (single axis) and Model #803 (dual-axis).  Each model can be fed from stick or coil; coil being the dominant method.  Cut length control can be either fixed tube stop or by servo feed roll.

    In this Case Study, the Model #803, fed from coil, was specified to satisfy volume requirements.  In order to maximize the feed speed of this machine, Haven recommends using a loop accumulator to balance the uncoiling action to the cutoff feed rates.  In this case, the customer did not have the floor space for the accumulator.  Haven engineers had to design a powered un-coiler with variable speed capability that would automatically adjust to infinite length setups.  The unwinding motion needed to be smooth; no jerking of the material and no speed reduction due to longer lengths (maximum 2000mm).  The resultant design combined variable speed drive control with an electronic speed feedback system.   This compact package, allowed the un-coilers to be placed relatively close to the cutoff, reducing overall floor spare.  Other features in this cut-to-length line included, electronic vision splice detection, servo feed and length control, and splice scrap separation.

  • Servo Double End Finisher for Pipe Couplings
    Double end finishing machine (Haven Model #922) for pre-formed stainless steel couplings....

  • A leading mechanical pipe coupling manufacturer chose Haven Manufacturing to design and build a double end finishing machine for pre-formed stainless steel couplings.  Haven is well known for precision end finishing of as-welded tube, but this application was unique and required several modifications to our Model #922 short length double end finisher.  The tube is pre-formed on both ends, which causes excess material to elongate randomly from the ends.  The challenge was three-fold; accurately locate the part in relation to the formed sections; be able to machine varying amounts of material from each end; and control the chip load.   Part location was solved by designing clamp jaws that are dedicated to each tube configuration.  They “lock” in the tube, so that the critical dimension from the profile to the end of the tube is consistently maintained.  The amount of material removal and the subsequent chip generation is controlled through the use of servo spindle feed control.  Each end is independently machined to its exact length and a “peck” feed motion controls the amount of material removal per spindle revolution.
