  • KWM Weisshaar puts its faith in boeck’s deburring tools
A 50 per cent saving in the machining time
Strong edge rounding, long service lives, good performance

Elements for interior fittings and air conditioners for railway technology, ceiling elements for operating theatres, sheet guide plates and storage air systems for printing machines – the question of how complex components can be made from simple sheets of metal is the specialty of KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH. In order to machine the sheets precisely and economically, the Mosbach-based company puts its faith in state-of-the art, automated machinery. Here, high-quality tools for deburring and rounding edges are provided by boeck GmbH from Leipheim.
From the engineering to sheet metal machining, the joining and welding technology to the assembly and logistics, everything comes from a single source - KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH is an expert in the field of metal and sheet metal machining throughout the entire process chain. The all-rounder and problem solver in the sheet metal sector with a team of almost 500 employees is a recognised partner of many industries such as the printing press, automotive, food industry, rail vehicle or general engineering sectors as well as the areas of cleanroom and medical technology. Every year, the company processes more than 5,000 tonnes of sheet metal from steel, stainless steel and aluminium to form what are in some cases highly complex components. It goes without saying that, in addition to efficient processes, top quality takes top priority.

Quality tools for sheet metal experts

Deburring and edge rounding are important steps in the process chain at KWM in view of the high demands placed on the production of the various components. They ideally prepare the laser-cut metal sheets for further processing. Among other things, the Mosbach-based company uses an automated FLADDER GYRO/300 deburring machine to this end. When employing this grinding technique, six grinding spindles rotate in opposite directions in pairs, simultaneously oscillating across the workpiece. "Thanks to this combination, the workpiece is machined continuously and evenly from alternating positions, almost without causing any damage to the surface. This enables a clean deburring and rounding of sheet metal parts - but only when you use the right tools," states Hans Schuster, a master of laser technology and CNC punching technology at KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH. "We have been using high quality deburring tools from boeck GmbH for some time – and not just for our FLADDER deburring machine.”
The innovative company from Leipheim is managed by the engineers Marc and Jochen Böck. The brothers and their team of experts develop and produce tailor-made tool solutions for sheet metal deburring - ranging from slag removal and rough grinding through deburring, edge-rounding and oxide removal to surface finishing. "We manufacture our tools on machines we develop ourselves with a high degree of automation. Thanks to the structured high-performance processes, we are not only able to guarantee the highest quality, but also quickly deliver tailor-made solutions at the same time. Almost all orders are shipped the same day", states Marc Böck , Managing Director of boeck GmbH.

Improved edge rounding while simultaneously reducing process times

Specifically for use on FLADDER deburring machines – in addition to other machine types - boeck has a variety of tools in its portfolio. On the FLADDER machine, KWM Weisshaar uses the deburring rollers with a diameter of 400 mm, a width of 250 mm and a receiving bore of 200 mm, thus achieving the best results in this way. Hans Schuster: "The deburring rollers provide very good levels of performance – whilst offering optimum value for money. We thus achieve a much improved level of edge rounding than with the tools previously used," says Hans Schuster. Jürgen Braun, foreman in the grinding and deburring section at KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH, is also enthusiastic: "In the past, we had to run the metal sheets through our FLADDER deburring machine four times to ensure sufficient levels of edge rounding, now we only have to do it twice. This saves on 50 per cent of our machining time!”
But what is so special about the deburring rollers? The individual abrasive cloth flaps are cut in a contactless manner via lasers.

As a result, there are no grain losses in the abrasive cloth, as is the case with punching, for example. boeck deburring rollers have a very high abrasive cloth content. In addition, the flaps are arranged in the grinding or deburring direction and can be worn down to the core diameter. This results in long service lifes. At the same time, the deburring rollers are very light, despite the high abrasive fabric density. "This simplifies the handling when changing tools," adds Jürgen Braun.
An additional quality characteristic: The deburring rollers are made of one piece without segmentation and therefore very sturdy. For smooth running, they are also balanced to the balance quality of G6,3.

    Different versions for different requirements

Depending on the workpiece range and the desired result, the user can choose between different types of abrasive cloth at boeck. Hans Schuster: “The standard version 'Brown Edition' is perfect for our requirements.” The all-rounder is suitable for all types of sheet metal. This allows us to machine the workpieces that change according to the job, without having to change the tools." In addition, boeck offers even more different versions: For example, edges on components made of aluminium and plastic are ideally rounded with the "Grey Edition". Customers requiring a very high removal rate or a marked level of edge rounding should resort to the "Purple Edition".
All variants are available with different, slit patterns specially developed by boeck for different requirements. A higher level of contact pressure and a longer service life can be achieved depending on the slit used. Boeck also has the right solution for edge rounding of small cutouts and holes or in the event that the flaps are not supposed to appear to be quite as aggressive at the start.

    Partner for innovation
KWM Weisshaar is open to new technologies in order to achieve ever greater time, quality and cost benefits for the customer. Thus, a very special partnership has developed between the two companies: "KWM Weisshaar and not least Hans Schuster and Jürgen Braun have always been interested in new products. With its very large, modern machinery for grinding and deburring, the company is able to put our abrasives to the acid test before they are used. At KWM, we receive constructive feedback within a very short space of time", states Marc Böck.
Hans Schuster also views boeck as more than just a simple tool supplier. "The company is instead an innovative development partner to make our grinding, deburring and oxide removal processes even more efficient. We also like to test boeck's innovative product ideas in terms of their suitability for everyday use and have already had many positive experiences with it."

  • From pre-sanding to the surface finishing of sheet metal parts
Everything from one source – including process consultancy
GEWA Blechtechnik puts its faith in boeck tools

Any company that wants to produce high-quality sheet-metal parts must constantly work on its processes and modernise the production facilities. This applies in particular to the finishing steps such as primary deburring, edge rounding and surface finishing. GEWA Blechtechnik has created the machine requirements to this end in the form of a WEBER grinding and deburring machine for the wet processing. Where the tools and abrasives are concerned, the Austrian company relies on the expertise of boeck GmbH from Leipheim and receives complete consultancy concerning the sheet metal deburring process chain. Whether it concerns square, round or curved products, large series, small series or individual parts, from simple sheet metal cutting to complete housings - GEWA Blechtechnik GmbH is one of the leading contract manufacturers in the Austrian metal industry, not least by virtue of its diverse manufacturing capabilities. At the Ried im Traunkreis site the sheet metal experts mainly manufacture for users from the electronics industry as well as the machinery and automotive sector at their 5,000 m² plant, with their workforce of some 65 employees. The company regularly invests in production facilities, whilst opting for state-of-the-art technology in order to meet the high quality standards of the various industries.

Collaboration of experts to ensure perfect results
GEWA uses a WEBER metal grinding machine from the NLC series for the deburring, edge rounding and surface finishing of sheet metal parts. "Thanks to the machine's wet grinding technology, we can easily and safely machine steel, stainless steel and aluminium using the same machine. Even greasy parts are no problem", according to Walter Zwicklhuber,
Managing director of GEWA Blechtechnik GmbH. "High-quality tools are key in the area of wet machining in particular to ensure long service lives and good results. boeck GmbH is your competent partner throughout the entire process chain. Here the consultancy extends well beyond the selection of the abrasive materials.
They also provide us with help and advice in the area of process optimization. Thus, for instance, machine and tool parameters such as cutting speeds and feed rates are recommended and tested together."
Here boeck GmbH can draw on many years of experience and expertise. The team of experts headed by the engineers Marc and Jochen Böck develops and produces tailor-made tool solutions with great passion and dedication for sheet metal deburring - ranging from slag removal and rough grinding through deburring, rounding and oxide removal to surface finishing. The tools are manufactured on machines we develop ourselves with a high degree of automation. The structured processes during both production and storage facilitate high quality goods and rapid delivery of tools.
“GEWA has a state of the art system in the form of the WEBER grinding and deburring machine. “With our rollers specially developed for wet-working grinding and deburring machines, we try to optimally structure the processes in terms of the costs, quality and time for GEWA", according to Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH.

We have our noses in front in the field of wet machining
Walter Zwicklhuber: "boeck’s deburring rollers offer very good levels of performance - especially in the field of wet machining. This was particularly important to us. Compared to other tools, we achieve improved abrasion performance and longer tool lives whilst also offering excellent value for money.” This performance facilitates the production of novel edging material which is laser cut on a machine developed in-house by boeck.
The special cuts of the flaps seal the edges ensuring no water can penetrate into the flaps. In addition, the high density of the abrasive cloth and complete wearing away of the flaps up to the core diameter contribute towards the long service life of the tools.
Due to the non-contact cutting by laser, the individual flaps also lose no grains in the abrasive cloth, as would for instance be the case during punching. In conjunction with the arrangement of the abrasive cloth flaps in the direction of grinding or deburring, this leads to a stronger edge rounding. An additional quality characteristic: The deburring rollers are made of one piece without segmentation and therefore very stable. The balance quality of G 6.3 ensures very smooth running.
GEWA uses deburring rollers with a diameter of 250 mm, a width of 260 mm and a receiving bore especially for use on WEBER deburring machines. boeck offers various types of abrasive cloth in its portfolio, depending on the workpiece and the desired deburring and edge-rounding results: The “Brown Edition” is the allrounder for all types of sheet metal.” In addition, the "Grey Edition" is suitable for rounding edges on components made of aluminium and plastic. Customers requiring a very high abrasion performance or a marked level of edge rounding should resort to the "Purple Edition".
Marc Böck: “We have initially developed our own slit pattern for different requirements. We can thus achieve a higher level of contact pressure and longer service lives depending on the slit patterns used. There are also suitable solutions for edge rounding of small cutouts and boreholes or for less aggressive grinding.”

They can be supplied within the shortest space of time
GEWA’s experts depend on boeck’s expertise not only for the rounding of the edges, but also for the upstream and downstream process steps. For the primary burr removal, GEWA uses abrasive cloth belts of the Leipheim-based company in different qualities and granulations. "The question of which abrasive fabric belt is suitable for the process depends on the desired abrasion performance and the material to be machined. boeck always has the right equipment ready to hand and can supply us with the required belts from its warehouse within a very short time," states Tobias Panhuber, Purchasing Manager at GEWA Blechtechnik GmbH.
In addition to different grains, the user can choose between different abrasives for the abrasive cloth belts. Whether for universal use or an aggressive but cool grinding result, for a fine grinding pattern with a good cutting performance or a high level of material abrasion at a low machining temperature, high durability and good surface quality - there is something for every requirement here.

    The final grinding touches
Where the surface finishing is concerned, GEWA removes the last scratches using boeck’s nonwoven belts. “In this process step as well, we are very satisfied with the consultancy and the tools provided. Depending on the workpiece and the desired result, various surface finishes are possible thanks to the different nonwoven belts employed", according to Tobias Panhuber. In the same way as the abrasive cloth belts, boeck also stocks the nonwoven belts in large quantities for other grinding and deburring machines and can thus respond rapidly to orders. “We have a supplier in boeck that ideally advises us on tools throughout the entire process chain.
From the primary burr removal through deburring and edge rounding to the surface finish, we feel we are very well looked after there. We require a strong partner especially for our WEBER wet grinding and deburring machine. This is because we can only achieve long service lives and consistently high performance for our processes using state-of-the-art tools", according to both Walter Zwicklhuber and Tobias Panhuber.

  • boeck’s HERO deburring discs are being used by Eberhardt

    Heroes in production –

the faster way to achieve edge-rounding

All-round service including consultation and fast delivery

Faster, better, stronger – mythical heroes from Heracles with his legendary physical strength to Lancelot, a glowing knight at King Arthur's table, and Siegfried the Dragon Slayer, they all stand out clearly from the crowd. Thanks to their outstanding qualities, they are capable of extraordinary deeds. The HERO deburring discs by boeck GmbH also achieve outstanding results: They achieve excellent edge-rounding within a very short time. The stainless steel experts at Eberhardt GmbH in Lichtenau witness that they live up to their name every day and have been able to significantly reduce their process times.

From stainless steel washbasins used in sausage production to presses weighing 800 kg for suppliers of industrial meat products – Eberhardt GmbH develops and manufactures high-quality stainless steel products for meat products companies. Ham presses, smoking and cooking products, as well as shelves.

The family business, employing 65 members of staff, produces hygiene and waste water technology made of stainless steel, which it supplies to over 100 countries.

To mark their 40th anniversary, Eberhardt invested in a fourth plant. In order to meet the requirements of an individual and flexible production able to provide high quality, the new facility was equipped with a modern machine park using trend-setting CNC technology. Among others, the company purchased a WEBER PT 1350. The new generation of universal grinding machines is ideally suited for deburring, rounding, descaling, and surface grinding of fine or heavy plates. Up to five grinding stations enable all processing variants. “We are always keen to use the latest technologies for our customers. As a result, we are always looking for optimal process solutions for our constantly growing machinery – also for our new WEBER grinding and deburring machine. In boeck GmbH, we have found the ideal partner to provide grinding and deburring tools”, says Ralf Eberhardt, Head of Development at Eberhardt GmbH.

HERO masters high demands with flying colours

Eberhardt mainly processes 304 (1,4301) stainless steel for the high-quality products – but, on request, also higher alloyed material such as 316 (1,4401) or 316Ti (1,4571). “In order to meet the high demands of the food industry, the quality of deburring and surface finishing is crucial when processing stainless steel components. In particular, Eberhardt’s very strong edge-rounding with sheet metal components posed a major challenge – exactly the right task for our newly developed HERO deburring discs”, qualified engineer and business graduate Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH is won over.

And rightly so: “We used to have to deburr and round the edges of the sheets by hand, which was a time-consuming process for our personnel. With HERO tools on our WEBER grinding and deburring machine, we achieve the extreme edge-rounding required on our components – and that in the shortest possible time. This saves us up to 80 percent in terms of process times”, says Kevin Eberhardt, Production Manager at Eberhardt GmbH enthusiastically. “With an annual processing volume of 1,500 tonnes of stainless steel sheet, this is considerable. Four employees, who were previously only responsible for deburring and edge-rounding, can now be employed more sensibly elsewhere.”

Technological leap thanks to the innovative structure

Why are HERO tools so efficient? The core feature of the new deburring discs is the extremely high abrasive density coupled with very high flexibility of the grinding set. To achieve this, boeck has developed a new arrangement and slot structure for the abrasive flaps. This increases the abrasive area many times over and thus also increases the performance of deburring machines. This result is no coincidence since the team of experts around the engineers Marc and Jochen Böck put their heart and soul into developing and producing tailor-made tool solutions for sheet metal deburring – from deslagging, rounding, and oxide removal to surface finishing.

Like most boeck products, HERO deburring discs are available with various surfaces to cover a wide range of applications. The Brown Edition is the all-rounder and can therefore be used for all types of sheet metal. If you want to deburr a little more aggressively, you need the Blue Edition. Compared to the standard material, the abrasive cloth achieves a higher abrasion at the edges of the sheet, resulting in better edge-rounding. The Grey Edition will win you over when processing aluminium and plastic components and also leaves the workpieces with a shiny surface.

    Tools for all applications

Eberhardt also use boeck tools for less demanding work. Marc Böck: “If less edge-rounding is required for stainless steel components, these are processed in Lichtenau with our PROFESSIONAL edition QUICK deburring discs. They are well suited for secondary burring and rounding of sheet metal components. Thanks to the double-row arrangement, they have more abrasive cloth than other deburring discs and ensure a uniform pressure ratio.”

Depending on the workpiece spectrum and the desired deburring or rounding result, boeck’s portfolio offers different variants of the QUICK deburring discs. For example, there is a standard variant for all types of sheet metal, there are several variants for greater edge-rounding and surface roughening, variants for aluminium and plastic processing, and especially for wet processing. boeck also offers QUICK tools for deburring outer edges as well as sheets with small recesses and drill holes.

Eberhardt also uses abrasive cloth belts from boeck for primary burr removal. In addition to different grit ranges, the user can choose between different abrasives for the abrasive cloth belts. Whether for universal use or aggressive but cool grinding, for a fine grinding pattern with high cutting ability or high material removal at a low processing temperature, long service life, and good surface quality – there is something for every requirement.

More than just a tool supplier

boeck’s service goes far beyond the supply of tools. “We are always looking to provide the best solution for our customers and therefore not only advise them on the right tool selection but also assist them in in every possible way, for example, when setting up the respective machine. Because only with the right parameters can the potential of our tools be fully exploited and benefit the user in terms of productivity as well as economically”, says Marc Böck. Here, boeck can rely on many years of experience and know-how. Not only do they develop tailor-made tool solutions, the tools are also manufactured on specially designed machines with a high degree of automation.

Which is another aspect that won over Eberhardt: “Whether by phone or on our premises – boeck’s experts provide us with quick, straightforward, and always very competent advice. Not least, the extensive tests with boeck ensure excellent results in deburring and edge-rounding. And that is not all: Short reaction and delivery times as well as the very good price-performance ratio of the tools round off boeck GmbH’s service package”, Kevin and Ralf Eberhardt both agree.
