Welcome to The Next Level of Coil Processing.

Welcome to the b+s group.

The Burghardt + Schmidt GmbH founded the b+s group throuch acquisition of traditional, well-known and firmly established companies on the world market.

B + S is a company with international reach. Since 1945, B+S has been the market leader for the highest standard of precision in slitting and leveling of metal especially thin and delicate metal strips. In fact, B+S is the world market leader for stretch-bend-leveling lines. The product portfolio includes slitting lines, coil processing lines, stretch-bend-leveling lines, traverse winders, leveling machines, cut-to-length lines, and packaging lines.

Schnutz is worldwide the company with the longest tradition in building levelers. First levelers have been manufactured and supplied 1882. We are the experts in leveling technology for sheet metal and have an outstanding and unique know-how in this technology. Schnutz also supplies strip feeding lines, roll change cars, service, retrofit and maintenance machines, and supply of new and regrinding of existing leveling rolls.

 Press Releases

  • Mechanical engineering and automation from a single source allows for realizing individual customer requirements

Building slitting and leveling lines constantly confronts manufacturers with new challenges, which often can only be resolved by specialized manufacturers under great time consumption. Ideally the whole production should therefore be done from a single source. In doing so, the lines and linked electrical and automation technology including the control software can be adjusted to meet customers’ requirements and their processes. In order to achieve this improved vertical range of manufacture, the Burghardt + Schmidt group hast integrated the automation specialist DELTA Technik GmbH into the corporate group as a subsidiary company as from the 01.02.2018. As a result, the experts for slitting and leveling systems optimize internal processes and strengthen their position as a competent service partner for every aspect of the production chain.

DELTA Technik has been supplying the electrical equipment for the B + S group's lines for more than twenty years, as the specialists for slitting and leveling lines have not had their own department responsible for this domain. "For some time now, we had been considering producing the automation electronics of our systems in-house or through an own company," reports Thomas Baral, Managing Director of Burghardt + Schmidt GmbH. "Many of our customers want a reliable contact partner for every component of their production chain, as this gives them certainty and enables a view of the work processes as a whole." This is why Burghardt + Schmidt decided to acquire DELTA Technik, whose automation technology has over many years proven to be reliable for the B + S corporate group. In this way, we ensure competent staff and a more comprehensive service.

DELTA Technik will also provide services for its own customer base in the future. "The only difference for the existing customers of DELTA Technik will be that they can now rely on a more comprehensive service," continues Baral. "DELTA Technik is of course commissioned for our projects, but the company itself will also attract new business from the market. Thus it remains almost in the usual form.” All customers of the B + S group benefit from the acquisition, through integrating the company know-how of the automation technology experts.

Comprehensive expertise for new and existing lines

One of the core competencies of DELTA Technik is drive technology. The company stands for highly dynamic and high-precision drive control. All components - from the motors to the inverters, the infeed / feedback, the sensors and the gearbox ratios to the drive controls - are optimally matched to the respective systems. "This is the premise for a stable production and guarantees high productivity and optimal product qualities of our customers," explains Frank Mehlich, Managing Director of DELTA Technik GmbH. "This also benefits the leveling lines of Schnutz GmbH, another B + S subsidiary."

Particularly demanding plant processes, such as, for example, traversing spoolers or cross-cutting shears, are realized by DELTA Technik with real-time capable systems. "Compared to our market competitors, we offer our customers the advantage of using common, freely available and open systems," continues Mehlich.

Another pillar of DELTA Technik is the modernization of existing plants. Particular attention is paid to plant productivity and the quality of the products produced by the plant. "Many automation companies can only modernize the systems of market competitors with great effort," says Mehlich. "With us, however, this is part of the core business, because thanks to our many years of experience, we know exactly what we have to pay attention to." In such cases, the DELTA Technik employees first carry out a plant inspection and examine the plant process including the operating philosophy and the installed components. Afterwards, the customer is presented with a modernization concept tailored to his requirements, discussed with him and finally decided and implemented. Short downtimes are very often in the foreground, which DELTA Technik always makes possible with suitable measures. A subsequent rapid start-up of the system is achieved by considering and optimizing existing process and operating sequences at the customer on site.

Safety technology for maximum system availability

Another competence of the company is plant safety. It is primarily about avoiding injuries to operating personnel but also about preventing possible machine damage. "We were one of the first companies to focus on safety technology for mechanical engineering early on, as it became increasingly important," explains Mehlich. "Even before the first legal machinery guidelines, we were therefore able to ensure the safe design of all work processes."

The aim of the safety concepts of DELTA Technik is always to ensure the greatest possible availability and productivity of the systems, while at the same time ensuring maximum protection for man and machinery. This includes, for example, a detailed analysis of all plant processes, risk assessments and validation of the safety functions. Against this background, employees of DELTA Technik were also trained and certified by TÜV as Functional Safety Experts. As a result, DELTA Technik has extensive know-how in terms of machine guidelines, product safety laws, risk assessments and declarations of conformity.

Internal communication enables improved customer service

The cooperation between the two companies should become even closer in the future. The entire staff of DELTA Technik was retained by the B + S group. Thanks to this additional expertise, the B + S group can now offer, manufacture and supply its systems as a full-range supplier. In the same way uncomplicated service of the machines is possible. Internal access to the appropriate specialist accelerates the service and thus maximizes system availability. "We are already receiving an increased request for offers and are seeing a significant improvement in our market share through the merger," concludes Mehlich. "All B + S customers are already feeling the positive effects of the wider range of service options," Baral adds.

  • Tailored-made cut-to-length line guarantees evenness, narrow tolerances and high surface quality

Martinrea Honsel Germany GmbH in Meschede is known as a specialist for outstanding mechanical properties, surface qualities and narrow tolerances in aluminum processing. Seeking to satisfy the rising requirements of the industry, the company replaced its outdated cut-to-length line and commissioned B+S with the production of a tailored-made line with a Schnutz leveler.

The range of products manufactured at the plant extends from coils and sheets to stamped blanks for trim parts in the automotive industry or sheet formed parts to decorate automobile interiors. The maintenance requirements for our previous system were rising continuously, and the procurement of spare parts was becoming increasingly difficult by the day. It had become necessary to maintain the old system in painstaking, increasingly short intervals in order to continue ensuring high quality – and in emergencies it was even necessary to commission external providers with cut-to-length services. System availability was therefore no longer guaranteed.

We had already collaborated with Burghardt + Schmidt GmbH in recent years on several projects which demonstrated their technical competency. Another decisive aspect for placing the order was the expertise at Schnutz GmbH, as their levelers had been picked as core components of the new cut-to-length system. The Siegerland-based leveler specialist has supplied roll levelers since the early 19th century and are therefore the world’s oldest manufacturer in this field. In fact, Schnutz has built its first leveler in 1882. This experience was crucial to the production of a  tailored-made system by Burghardt + Schmidt and its subsidiary Schnutz according to strict specifications.

  • Flatness requirements for metal strips have enormously increased  in recent years. At the same time, there is a trend - particularly in the electronics industry - towards increasingly thinner materials. Here, quality improvements through stretch-bend-leveling facilitate further processing considerably. Therefore, the slitting and leveling specialist Burghardt + Schmidt (B+S) developed an innovative solution for the leveling of extremely thin copper strips for a Chinese manufacturer. The line is suited for all alloys of the material as well as for phosphor bronze, and allows strips just 30 µm thick to be processed with minimal tolerances. Depending on the starting material, flatnesses down to one I-unit can be achieved.

The client in China manufactures parts for the electronics industry that need to satisfy exacting requirements with regard to surface quality as well as flatness or dimensional accuracy. In this case, extremely thin metal strips are used. At a plant to be redesigned, these are to be prepared for further processing. The aim of the new purchase was to keep the shape tolerance within tight limits during the stamping process. This is vitally important in regard to the automated assembly of electronic components. Besides flatness, the client also defined exclusion criteria relating to the surface quality. This means that the optical density of the end product should not be changed through the processing.

Given the clearly recognisable trend for ever thinner strips, the B+S lines constantly reach their control limits. Due to customer requirements as well as the results of corresponding market analyses, we have therefore step ahead with developments for some time. These generally allow the leveling of metal strips that are just 20 µm thick. The concept presented and the company's extensive experience in stretch-bend-leveling, world market leader, was ultimately the decisive factors in winning the contract from China.

  • Burghardt & Schmidt has installed the very first VACUUM TENSION STAND for slitting lines in the USA.

This new Vacuum Brake only touches the material on the bottom surface of the slit strips eliminating marks to the surface of the slit material. The vacuum drum rotates with the material as it travels to the recoiler. The vacuum stand is for Tin Plate, Soft Copper, Aluminum or any surface critical material. Material thickness from 0.001” to 0.098” can be tightly rewound without the help of any other tensioning devise.

The vacuum force and width settings are setup at the operator control panel. This vacuum stand is also adjustable for different widths from full width to specific narrower strip widths. It can operate slitting on the drive side, operator side or center line. An option for automatically feeding the material into the Recoiler is also available.

Burghardt & Schmidt is a manufacturer of metal coil processing systems including Slitting lines, Cut-to-Length lines, Stretch-Bend-Leveling lines, Levelers, Traverse Winders and Packaging systems. Machinery is designed and built at our facility in Remchingen, Germany and sold through our sales manager, Mike McGuire, in the USA. With more than 20 installations in the USA and a full service group to assist our customers, B+S is well prepared to be your partner for success, delivering absolute precision with every line.

  • STRIP FEEDING LINES
Schnutz, the leveler expert, has developed sophisticated strip feeding lines for presses. Due to the demand of more high tensile material, Schnutz has investigated into a compact design of feeding lines....

  • Welcome to the oldest leveler producer worldwirde!

For more than 170 years, Schnutz has been known for high qualitative leveling machines. Schnutz understood it at the very beginning of their being to be a step ahead of the industry. Therefore, they started to build compact strip feeding lines.

Recently, Schnutz has developed a new concept for high tensile steel for seat rails. They outperform their leveling competitors with their knowlegde in high-performance leveling machines. The high forming resistance associated with increasing tensile strengths of these steels places particular demands on the forming processes and the system technology used. Existing systems are often unable to process modern metals. The complex multi-stage forming process in a high performance press also requires special handling of the high strength material in the feeding process.
