 Press Releases

  • Thermal Dynamicsâ, an ESAB brand, will showcase its Cutmasterâ 60i handheld air plasma cutting system at FABTECH Canada 2018 in booth 1162 at the Toronto Congress Centre, June 12 – 14. The Cutmaster 60i is now available in 1- or 3-phase primary input power options. The introduction of a dedicated 3-phase plasma cutter meets the needs of fabricators who value the efficiency and lower operating costs of 3-phase power, while the Cutmaster 60i dedicated 1-phase unit appeals to fabricators who like the convenience of 1-phase power.

“Both Cutmaster 60i versions automatically connect with primary power from 208 – 480V, 50 or 60 Hz. The wide voltage range means that Cutmaster 60i works great in locations with dirty power and off generator power,” says John Henderson, North American Product Manager, Adjacencies & Accessories, ESAB Welding & Cutting Products.

    Powerful Experience

Ed Werner, owner of Werner Fabrications, West Bend, Wis., uses the 1-phase version for mechanical contracting and HVAC field work. “Even if a plant has 230V primary power, I usually don’t bother with it,” he says. “I just run an extension cord to my 12 kW generator, and the Cutmaster 60i works fantastic. It's a great combination.”

Other than primary power, both versions of the Cutmaster 60i feature identical performance. They weigh 37 lbs. and provide a rated output of 60 amps (7.6 kW of cutting power) at 50 percent duty cycle, the industry’s highest power-to-weight ratio.

“We have other manual plasma cutters in the shop, but the Cutmaster 60i is about half the size and weight,” says Kyle Kinser, VP of Operations for Structural Strategies, Inc., Aurora, Ill. “For a little unit, it really packs a punch. It will cut 5/8-in. steel like butter and even sever steel up to 1-1/2 inch.” Kinser uses the 3-phase version of the Cutmaster 60i to cut skeletons from an automated plasma cutting table, as well as for general fabrication work such as cutting and coping beams, cutting stringers for staircases and cutting out flanges for structural steel applications.

The Cutmaster 60i provides a best-in-class arc length, which helps when cutting in awkward positions and for ease-of-use when gouging. It also features an oversized digital display to communicate more information, more clearly. This includes:

    • A consumables end-of-life indicator — lets users know when it’s time to replace consumables to maintain optimal cut quality.
    • A gas optimizer function that precisely regulates air pressure to ensure performance.
    • Four modes of operation: cut, gouge, rapid auto restart and latch (trigger lock).
    • Cutting output in amps; more is not always better, as reducing output provides greater precision on thinner materials.

The Cutmaster 60i system includes the new SL60QD™ 1Torch. QD stands for quick disconnect, which enables selective replacement of the torch handle assembly or torch leads to save money when replacing parts.

  • ESAB Welding & Cutting Products will showcase its Rebel™ EMP 285ic multi-process welder for MIG, Flux-Cored and DC Stick and TIG welding at FABTECH Canada 2018 in booth 1162 at the Toronto Congress Centre, June 12 – 14. The 70-lb. 1-phase version of Rebel EMP 285ic accepts 90 – 270V primary power, provides a rated output of 285 amps at 40% duty cycle and maximum output of 300 amps/36 volts. ESAB anticipates that the unit will be in stock and ready to order in Canada and the U.S. by late June.

“Rebel 285ic is the most industrial Rebel yet. Rebel 285’s strong output enables users to gain the productivity benefits of spray transfer welding with .045-in. solid wires and .047-in. aluminum wires, as well as weld with the full range of .045- and .052-in. Flux-Cored wires,” says Doug Smith, Product Business Manager – Light/Industrial Arc Equipment, ESAB. In addition, the multiprocess Rebel EMP 235ic handles the larger diameter Stick electrodes and TIG rods.

ESAB also plans to launch a 3-phase model of Rebel EMP 285ic that will accept 380 – 575V primary, provide a rated output of 285 amps at 50% duty cycle and have a maximum output of 350 amps/36 volts. Anticipated availability will be late Q2 or early Q3.

Smith notes that rather than label Rebel EMP welders with outputs around an arbitrary number such as 250, ESAB designs them around the filler metals most commonly used by the intended audiences. He says that, “ESAB focused Rebel 285 on welding the full range .045-in diameter wires, Rebel 235 on .035-in. wires and Rebel 215 on .030-in. wires. This allows fabricators to maximize performance and productivity with a full system approach.” He notes traditional welders with similar outputs category are typically single-process MIG machines that weigh about 200 lbs. and lack the capabilities of wire performance potential.  Rebel 285 offers fabricators a machine with true industrial performance for shop work and the power, portability and multi-process flexibility contractors need for structural steel erection.

    Rebel DNA

The Rebel 285 maintains all the benefits of other Rebel EMP welders. The machine automatically detects the correct single-phase input power from 90 to 270V. Rebel 285 comes wired with a 230V plug; users simply need to attach the supplied power adapter to connect to 120V power. It holds 4-, 8- or 12-in. wire spools, features dual gas ports with solenoid valves and has optional single- and dual-cylinder carts, remote amperage controls and spool guns for MIG aluminum.

Rebel 285 looks identical to Rebel 235 (it uses the same tough case) and features the same TFT LCD color display, Basic and Advanced Mode operation and sMIG (“smart MIG”) technology for quick and easy results when short circuit MIG welding. The sMIG function monitors the operator’s technique and continuously adapts to provide a stable arc and superior, repeatable welds.

“You can actually hear sMIG fine tune the arc after a few seconds of welding, dialing in that perfect ‘sizzling bacon’ sound that signifies proper welding parameters,” says Smith. “This technology reduces downtime when changing parameters, helps train new operators and can improve consistency between welding stations.”

  • ESAB Welding & Cutting Products will provide visitors to FABTECH Canada 2018 with a preview of Rebel™ EMP 205 AC/DC, the world’s first true all-process, inverter-based welding system in booth 1162 at the Toronto Congress Centre, June 12 – 14. Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC enables users to TIG weld with AC and DC outputs, MIG weld with solid wires (steel, stainless or aluminum), Flux-Cored weld with gas-shielded and self-shielded wires and Stick weld with a DC output. The rated duty cycle is 205 amps at 20 percent.

“For professional fabricators and tradesmen who want to weld all metals with all processes and use only a single unit, the ultimate welder has always been a multi-process CC/CV power source with an AC/DC TIG output. ESAB has delivered that innovation with the Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC by leveraging the platform of the Rebel franchise,” says Doug Smith, Product Business Manager – Arc Equipment, ESAB.

Smith notes that previous all-process units required additional controls or accessories, or they sacrificed arc performance in one or more processes. ESAB invites FABTECH attendees to conduct their own evaluation. Visitor to the ESAB booth can use the AC output to TIG weld aluminum and the DC output to TIG weld mild steel or stainless steel.

    Rebel DNA

Smith notes that when designing the unit, “ESAB maintained all the features and benefits end-users love about Rebel EMP multiprocess welders while adding an AC output and high-frequency (HF) arc start capabilities, both of which are required for TIG welding aluminum. ESAB also incorporated essential controls for AC TIG welding, such as an adjustable AC output frequency (up to 400 Hz) and adjustable AC wave balance control (up to 90 percent EN).”

AC output frequency controls the shape of the arc cone and arc force, while wave balance controls the amount of cleaning action vs. penetration. HF, or non-contact, arc starts are required for aluminum and are desirable (and sometimes required) in applications where end-users especially want to prevent accidental contamination from the tungsten electrode. These include welding chrome-moly tubing in motorsports and experimental aircraft applications, as well as welding stainless steel tubing in dairy and food processing facilities.

Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC features include 120V to 230V primary power flexibility, compact portability (the unit weighs 50 lbs.), a TFT LCD operator interface, dual gas solenoid valves and the same rugged housing as other Rebel units. It also incorporates ESAB’s unique sMIG (“smart MIG”) function that enables users to begin MIG welding – with an extremely stable arc – just by setting metal thickness and wire diameter. Anticipated commercial availability is Q3 2018, with an approximate MSRP of $2,900.
