  • The ProtoMAX® abrasive waterjet is designed for prototyping, light industry, technical education, artists and the maker movement

KENT, Wash., September 26, 2017 – OMAX Corporation announced the release of the new ProtoMAX abrasive waterjet, a compact, self-installed cutting system ideally suited for prototyping and relatively low volume cutting of almost any material under 2” thick. The ProtoMAX brings all the versatility benefits of large abrasive waterjet cutters in a sleek and economic package that’s perfect for small job shops, engineering classrooms, makerspaces, and personal use. It’s also a handy addition for large shops and fabricators that need occasional waterjet capabilities to complement their other cutting systems.

Though compact, the ProtoMAX delivers 30,000 psi cutting power with a 5 hp pump and can precision cut material under 2” thick of almost any type, from metal to composites, glass to granite, plastic to wood, and more. The ProtoMAX cuts with no heat-affected zone and no change to the material properties. The waterjet plugs into a 240V AC dryer-style outlet and does not require any hardwiring. The pump and cutting table are on casters for easy relocation. Work material is submerged under water for clean, quiet cutting that won’t disrupt a shared work space.

OMAX manufactures the ProtoMAX at the OMAX facility in Kent, Washington, including the pump, cutting head, abrasive feeder, motion controller and software. All parts are designed to work together as a complete, integrated system.

The programming of part files and the cutting operation are controlled by Intelli-MAX software. Vice president of marketing at OMAX Corporation Stephen Bruner comments, “It’s easy to program even complex paths on the ProtoMAX. We’ve taken many of the same popular CAD/CAM software features that we use in our industrial waterjet systems and incorporated it into the compact ProtoMAX waterjet. Behind the scenes, the software uses sophisticated waterjet cutting models that predict the jet’s precise behavior when cutting different materials, thicknesses and shapes. But the user interface is simple and straightforward, making it an ideal learning tool for computer-aided manufacturing.”

OMAX launched www.protomax.com to provide additional information about the ProtoMAX waterjet, including purchasing options. The site includes design ideas, specifications, frequently asked questions, and a community section to support ProtoMAX enthusiasts.

  • Essentially featured GlobalMAX waterjets emphasize value and durability

KENT, Wash., October 3, 2017 – OMAX Corporation, the leading manufacturer of advanced waterjets, announced the release of their new GlobalMAX® product line, designed to bring the versatility of waterjet machining to a wider range of customers. The GlobalMAX system incorporates two and a half decades of OMAX waterjet research and development into a space-saving table design for users that need basic accessory compatibility.

Like the OMAX Premium and MAXIEM waterjets, the GlobalMAX machines are designed, manufactured and tested as an integrated system, including an energy efficient direct drive pump, a table that provides access on all sides, and a motion control system created specifically for abrasive waterjets. The easy-to-use Intelli-MAX control software that comes with GlobalMAX waterjets allows operators to import part files from any major CAD or graphics programs, or create drawings from scratch.

“The GlobalMAX product line was created to extend our waterjet engineering and manufacturing technology base to more customers,” explains Stephen Bruner, vice president of marketing at OMAX Corporation. “We build waterjet systems that help our customers make money in the short and long term, and this product line is no exception. With GlobalMAX, more fabricators and machine shops can benefit from the versatility and precision of waterjet cutting. We’ve incorporated the proven technology from our other waterjet lines into a rugged and ergonomic design for shops that need a machine that can cut virtually any material, but don’t need all the bells and whistles.”

Because abrasive waterjets use a cold cutting process, there is no heat-affected zone (HAZ), and therefore no distortion to the work material and often no need for secondary finishing operations. GlobalMAX waterjets can easily cut materials that are often difficult to cut using traditional machining methods such as plasma and laser. Material can be stacked and parts can be nested, significantly reducing production time and material costs.

GlobalMAX abrasive waterjet systems are available in three different cutting bed sizes, 2’7” x 5’, 10’ x 5’, and 13’3” x 6’8”. There are also two direct drive pump sizes available, 20HP and 30HP. The machine does X/Y axis cutting with three degrees of freedom. A number of compatible accessories are available for the GlobalMAX line, including a terrain follower, a pneumatic drill, a laser feature finder, and a bulk garnet feed hopper. All components of this new line are designed, manufactured, assembled and tested at our headquarters in Kent, Washington to ensure quality and component compatibility.
