This capability is based on extensively researched and patented algorithms. Our algorithms design diverse folding structures with programmed expansion rates and customizable deployment architectures. The algorithms enable direct access to the key design features that control the deployment sequence and generate an infinite assortment of patterns.
The technology extends to linkage systems. A membrane is packed within an expanding space truss so that the two systems deploy in unison. This was developed by taking a multi-laminate folding configuration and cutting out center portions on one of the laminates. The exact solution to the linkage equations from the multi-laminate folding tessellation transfers to the structure with cutouts. The folding patterns can also be integrated with strut systems and dynamic space trusses with additional methodologies by designing the tessellation and the linkage to have the same periods and relative rates of movement. Expanding cylindrical vessels are also a key area of Foldstar research.
