    BOFA International

BOFA International launched in 1987 as a small family business and has developed into a multi-award-winning global leader in fume extraction and filtration, acknowledged as number one in the industry.

It now employs over 260 people at its headquarters in Poole, Dorset, and in offices in Germany and the USA and exports to 120 countries around the world. Its expertise in providing reliable, high quality fume extraction solutions has become well established over the last 33 years and trusted by all sizes of business in a wide cross section of industries including laser, electronics, mechanical engineering, printing, 3D printing, dental, medical, pharmaceutical and beauty.

In September 2018, BOFA International was acquired by US-based Donaldson Company, Inc, a global leader in the industrial filtration market, manufacturing filtration systems and parts.

  • From medical visors to components for spacecraft, 3D printing is transforming our understanding of how things are made.

The adoption of additive manufacturing technologies is accelerating, and with this is an increasing awareness of the potential health and safety risks presented by the fume and particulate emitted by these processes.

BOFA International, a global leader in portable industrial fume and dust extraction, is seeing growing demand for its specialized range of 3D print systems that remove process odors and help capture potentially harmful airborne contaminants at source. Without this filtration, fume and particulate could enter the breathing zones of operators, with the potential to impact on human health.

The company is at the forefront of 3D print extraction system design for additive manufacturing and will be showcasing its technology line-up at the RAPID + TCT exhibition (Booth E7841) taking place in Chicago, September 13th-15th.

“3D printing covers lots of different additive manufacturing processes but they share a need for effective removal of particulate and fume – including nanoparticles – to help operators meet their Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulatory obligations,” said Haydn Knight, Sales & Marketing Director at BOFA.

“BOFA technology not only helps remove potentially harmful airborne contaminants and odors, but it can also capture print residue that would otherwise build-up on expensive machinery. In time, this debris would likely degrade high-value components, affect product quality and impact productivity.”

Many customers also report an additional benefit. Venting the print chamber to atmosphere or recirculating the air can provide temperature control within the chamber. Accurate flow control systems featured on many BOFA products adjust the rate at which the air is moved; enabling thermal precision during printing processes through active convection.

BOFA has developed a range of solutions covering the many different processes involved in additive manufacturing, with filter technology and extraction performance matched to specific applications.

The latest innovations include a new design for a sealed filter exchange to remove the risk of thermal events in pyrophoric material operations, as featured in the company’s new AM400 model.

The AM400 will be on display at RAPID + TCT, alongside BOFA’s 3D PrintPRO line-up, which includes a redesigned larger capacity 3D PrintPRO 4 and the brand new 3D PrintPRO HT, which can filter high temperature particulate and gases emitted by advanced 3D print units.

In September 2018, BOFA International was acquired by US-based Donaldson Company, Inc, a global leader in the industrial filtration market, manufacturing filtration systems and parts.

  • BOFA International has developed a world first innovation in fume extraction to make the exchange of filters in metal additive manufacturing processes safer, faster and better for productivity.

The new stand-alone AM 400 system uses patented technology that enables the filters that remove potentially harmful fume, gases and particulate from metal additive manufacturing to be exchanged on site without risking a thermal event. BOFA will be launching the new product at the RAPID + TCT show taking place in Chicago, September 13th-15th, where BOFA will be exhibiting in booth E7841.

The laser powder bed fusion process used in metal additive manufacturing needs to operate in an inert atmosphere because the materials worked risk spontaneous ignition should they come into contact with oxygen. As a consequence, when new filters are needed for these systems, up until now, equipment had to be shut down and moved to a safe area for the saturated filters to be removed and replaced by operatives wearing full PPE.

With BOFA’s AM 400, filters are contained within a separate housing with a robust seal, enabling filter exchange to be completed quickly and safely without isolating the additive manufacturing equipment.

Haydn Knight, Sales & Marketing Director at BOFA, commented: “This innovation in filtration design will lead to significant productivity gains for businesses involved in metal additive manufacturing. This production process is used across multiple industry sectors to create high value components and products, and by enabling easier and safer filter exchange, end users are able to benefit from reduced downtime which translates into tangible productivity gains.”

The AM 400 extraction system has been developed specifically for the metal additive manufacturing market, offering high air flow potential up to a maximum flow of 190 cu ft/min and a maximum operating pressure of 250mBar, with low leakage at <30ml/min @ -10mBar.

In addition to enhancing filter exchange efficiency and safety, AM 400 system users will also benefit from patented innovations that optimize filter performance, enabling operators to monitor filter status and coordinate exchanges to match maintenance schedules.

Added Haydn Knight: “The AM 400 marks a significant advancement in extraction technology for metal additive manufacturing through a design that helps safeguard human health and product quality while delivering value-adding productivity improvements.”

The AM 400 will be featured in the BOFA line-up at RAPID + TCT, alongside a new high temperature 3D PrintPRO model (3D PrintPRO HT) and a redesigned 3D PrintPRO 4 system as part of its full line-up of 3D PrintPRO units (3D PrintPRO 2, 3, 4 and HT).
