‘DRYWISE’, ADVANCED INLINE 3D PRINTING DRYING SOLUTION, LAUNCH IN U.S. MARKET ANNOUNCED

Developed in Malta by Thought3D, this innovative advancement provides reliable and consistent filament drying during printing.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – MAY 16, 2022 – Thought3D Ltd. (Thought3D) today announced the upcoming U.S. launch of Drywise, its innovative new in-line filament dryer for FFF 3D printers. Drywise unlocks the true potential of printing with engineering materials as it eliminates the guesswork out of 3D printing with hygroscopic materials. The patent-pending, active, in-line drying technology ensures the material is at the best possible conditions throughout the duration of the 3D printing job. Drywise will be unveiled and officially released in the U.S. with a live demonstration at the Rapid+TCT Tradeshow in Detroit, Michigan on May 17-19, 2022.

“We’re really excited to bring this innovation in 3D printing from our labs in Malta to the United States,” said Andrei-Andy Linnas, co-founder, Thought3D. “We believe the 3D printing process should be about creativity and productivity – not worrying about reliability. Drywise eliminates the longer drying cycles and pre-planning routines with a drying solution that is fast, intelligent, user friendly and consistent.”

Drywise is designed to be used in tandem with a 3D printer to dry hygroscopic filaments in real time during printing. After a short pre-dry cycle on the first portion of the filament, the user can load this filament and print with ease and peace of mind as the filament will be dried consistently for the whole duration of the print.

Thought3D leveraged the most advanced technology to make Drywise an incomparable solution. Drywise ensures the filament is at the best condition for 3D printing and can also detect any idle moments to guarantee consistency and safety. The device’s user-friendly interface guides the user all the way and exchangeable and rechargeable desiccant cartridges eliminate down time. The list of materials certified to work with Drywise is always constantly growing.

Most thermoplastic materials tend to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. It is also common, that newly opened filaments already contain a significant amount of moisture that affects the printing process. Hissing and popping sounds, are the first tell-tale signs that one is printing with wet filament. This happens because the water absorbed by the plastic is very quickly vaporized by the heated nozzle. As a result of this rapid phase change, inconsistent material extrusion and nozzle blockages are a common occurrence.

This inconsistent material extrusion will have several visible effects on your prints. Stringing and oozing in prints will be more pronounced as the added pressure in the hot end results in less control over the amount of extruded material. The strength of the print will also be negatively affected. As water changes to steam, voids (bubbles) will be trapped inside the filament and ultimately the print, reducing layer adhesion and the overall part strength. Parts printed with correctly dried filament tend to show less of these artifacts, resulting in a better surface finish and superior strength.

There are several conventional ways to dry wet filament with most manufacturers recommending an oven to heat up the filament and drive the moisture out. However, that strategy has several drawbacks. Conventional filament drying methods tend to be overly time and energy consuming as the filament must be dried for several hours before it can be used for printing. The spools themselves, onto which the filament is wound, need to be from specific materials to be able to withstand the heat in the oven. In some cases, the material might not be consistently dried throughout the filament spool.  During longer prints some materials tend to pick up enough moisture to negatively affect their quality, even after being correctly dried before unless stored in special filament storage solutions during printing which help to reduce this issue.

Drywise was created to fill the gap left by these conventional solutions as 3D printer users want to spend less time preparing and more time completing their 3D printing projects, whether they are for tooling, functional prototyping, industrial modelling, or end-use parts production.

Active in-line drying, as made possible by Drywise, solves drying issues once and for all:

    • In-line drying allows for perfect drying over the whole duration of the printing cycle regardless of how long the print is.
    • Consistent drying is guaranteed regardless of the initial material conditions.
    • Material heat cycling is eliminated as only the right amount of filament needed for printing just in time for printing is dried.
    • No spool size or material limitation as the drying happens inline
    • Easy operation with pre-calibrated material specific drying profiles making the whole process seamless.
    • Specific add-on developed (sold separately), for especially hard to process materials

Drywise lets the end-user focus on what is important – getting their project done.

Drywise is priced at $1,663 and available now. Learn more about Drywise at drywise.co or visit booth 1543 at the Rapid+TCT tradeshow in Detroit, MI from May 17-19.

Andrei-Andy Linnas can be made available for select in-person interviews with the media during the tradeshow as well as select interviews with international outlets before and after the show via phone or Zoom.

  • About Drywise filament in-line dryer

Drywise is a stand alone machine to be used in tandem with a 3D printer to dry hygroscopic filaments in real time while printing. After a pre-dry cycle of under 50 minutes, on the first portion of filament, a user is free to print the freshly dried filament with ease, and consistency.

Why is drying filament a thing?

Hygroscopic FDM filaments tend to absorb significant amounts of moisture from the environment  as soon as they are opened and over the course of a few hours to a few days this moisture can render the material unprintable. Some materials, due to high moisture levels already present in the material, would need to be dried even before the first use. The presence of moisture in filaments can cause visible artefacts during printing, including: poor surface finish, stringing and oozing. Moisture in filaments can potentially cause print failure and affect the mechanical properties of the printed part. As a result moisture sensitive materials need to be dried prior to printing, however without special storage or pre -treatment the print quality can still degrade noticeably during the print, especially during the course of a longer print

How have we ever lived without drying?

To combat this, most 3D printer users are resorting to drying filament in ovens and using material stations that reduce the uptake of additional moisture. In other cases either bulky and costly commercial products are used or for money-saving make-shift boxes with desiccant are crafted. This all is cumbersome and can take tens of hours of drying time. Many users have to follow filament manufacturers instructions for drying the filament and having multitude of unstandardised ways of treatment leave a lot of room for error and lead to unreliable results. Moreover, pre-treatingfilament spools multiple times may degrade the quality of the material.

How does Drywise change the game?

Drywise takes out the guesswork when 3D printing hygroscopic materials.

Drywise needs just 50 minutes to pre-treat a short portion of filament and bring it to the best printing conditions before 3D printing can start. An in-line drying design assures that long 3D prints will always be printed with consistent material dried to best printing conditions.
