  • At FABTECH in booth #D45755, Marposs, a world leader in measurement and process monitoring technologies, will be demonstrating its Brankamp X3S intelligent process monitoring system for metal forming and stamping operations. These real-time monitoring units help to immediately identify manufacturing faults as well as part or tool variations, enabling manufacturers to optimize machine efficiency, improve part quality, and limit unplanned downtime and tooling costs.

    The trend toward lightweight construction and increasing part complexity can result in higher deformation levels. Process-integrated monitoring provides an effective way to detect a broad range of quality defects such as cracks in components, strip marks, broken tool elements or turned or mis-introduced parts, which provides 100 percent workpiece quality control. The X3S is an economical solution for this type of monitoring with 12 channels for receiving sensor signals that are measuring things such as force, acoustic emission, distance, temperature, etc.

    A new feature of the X3s for the automatic control of the plunging depth for high speed stamping presses. This means that systematic changes in various process parameters such as sheet thickness, material hardness, tool and machine temperature that change during the manufacturing process can be automatically compensated in connection with the plc of the machine.

    The systems work in the following manner. Sensors are placed on the machine or tool in relevant locations, converting energy into electrical signals that monitor tool and machine performances related to the forces applied. From these sensors, the systems learn the normal limits of the process. The control unit then observes the signals of each cycle and compares it with the stored curve. When the signal moves outside of the envelope curve, the formed part is sorted out or the machine is stopped.

    The X3s features a 9-inch touch screen with an intuitive operator interface. In addition to the multi-channel display, the systems have various analysis functions, e.g. automatic recording of run and set-up times or downtimes, as well as different counters and storage media to ensure repeatability of the various processes.

    Integration with FactoryNet® 4.0
    The X3S has data collection masks for connecting to FactoryNet®4.0, Marposs MES software suite, designed to provide a powerful interface between machine, operator, production and resource planning and higher-level ERP systems. FactoryNET 4.0 enables end-to-end documentation of the processes due to its connection directly with process monitoring. This connection delivers knowledge that can be used to reduce set-up and downtime, optimize lead times, and enhance machine utilization.

Unlike other data acquisition systems, FactoryNET 4.0 enables end-to-end documentation of the machine processes due to its connection directly with process monitoring. This connection delivers knowledge that can be used to reduce set-up and downtime, optimize lead times, and enhance machine utilization.

    Systems without process monitoring like automatic sorters, hardening furnaces or packaging machines can also be included in the data acquisition and integrated in the FactoryNET 4.0 information loop. The T1 terminal can be connected to the FactoryNET 4.0 by network interface.  Real-time data from all the connected machines are automatically collected and delivered, providing information on production cycles, processes, and quality as well as resources available and required. This interconnectivity helps to optimize production flow from preventative maintenance, process stabilization, and quality assurance to resource planning.  Production costs and quality are always transparent and traceable through the statistical recording and evaluation of performance indicators.

  • At FABTECH 2019 in booth #D45755, Marposs will demonstrate its Brankamp X3S monitoring, control and measurement unit with a new plunging depth feature for high speed stamping presses. This capability automatically compensates for machine process parameters—such as sheet thickness, material hardness, tool and machine temperature—that change during the stamping process via a connection with the press PLC.  

    Although advanced presses can automatically correct the ram position during the manufacturing process and adapt it to changed production speeds, employing the Brankamp monitoring system enables a more extensive plunging depth control system.  This approach can detect and evaluate stop block forces during the stamping process using special control algorithms to carry out a step-by-step adjustment (step size 2 um or 10 um) of the ram position.

    The stamping process and its clamping forces at the machine's lower reversal point are kept constant. At the same time, the machine operators are informed “on the fly” about plunging depth setting when the tools are set up, and the insertion height can be automatically adjusted to the optimum range. Depending on the complexity of the tool and the number of equipped stop blocks, a different number of limit stop forces can be included in the control system.

    The X3S control system visualizes the calibrated force progressions and displays the control variables executed for the user. A standardized interface to the PLC makes it easy to connect the Brankamp control system to automatic stamping machines.
