  • When it comes to being an educator, it can feel like there aren't enough hours in the day. To help shoulder the load, AWS has developed a comprehensive welding curriculum for high schools, technical colleges, and career training institutions. This full suite of digital and print resources lets instructors focus on teaching and helps spark their students’ interest in welding.

The AWS Fundamentals of Welding curriculum covers health and safety, welding symbols and joint design, arc welding (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW), thermal cutting (OFC, PAC, CAC-A), and welding inspection. It aligns with the governing standards of the SENSE program and was created and reviewed in tandem with subject matter experts (SMEs) and welding education professionals. Whether a school is currently part of the SENSE program or is simply looking to improve their current welding program, this curriculum can help deliver quality instruction in an effective and structured manner.

"In just about every discussion we’ve had with welding educators and administrators, the lack of high-quality educational materials was cited as a serious concern," said Eduardo Guerra, Instructional Design Manager, Education and Training. "The AWS Fundamentals of Welding curriculum was developed to address that void, and we're proud to offer a product that supports welding education and aligns with the spirit of the AWS mission."

The AWS Fundamentals of Welding curriculum package consists of the following:

    Print Materials
    • 25 copies of the Fundamentals of Welding textbook
    • 25 copies of the Fundamentals of Welding Lab Manual – 100+ guided laboratory activities
    • 12 classroom posters – 8 informational and 4 decorative/inspirational

    Digital Content

  • The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential is one of the most respected professional credentials in the welding industry. CWIs are often highly regarded and sought-after throughout the world. These people are trained to evaluate weldments for imperfections that, if not identified and corrected, could result in product failure, as well as possible loss of revenue, property and more.

To become a CWI, candidates must pass a 3-part exam that is intentionally challenging, to make sure those who get certified are equipped to carry out their inspection responsibilities in the field, on the job site or shop floor. CWI exam participants say that preparing for it is critical, because taking it can be overwhelming and intense.

Most CWI hopefuls choose to prepare for the exam in a classroom setting, so they can get real-time, in-person training and feedback from their instructors. At the onset of the pandemic, many training facilities shut their doors or pivoted to offering only online instruction.

Anticipating an increased post-pandemic demand once restrictions were lifted, AWS inventoried their CWI exam training and seminar options for programming opportunities. The review showed AWS offers sufficient online options, but only one in-person training option; a one-week seminar.

“When we asked our members, many felt that six days isn’t enough to absorb all the material to feel confident taking the CWI exam,” said Alicia Garcia, Director of Education and Training. As a result of this feedback, AWS created a comprehensive two-week in-person seminar package. “While there are other organizations that offer a two-week in-person seminar; we provide more value at a lower price point,” continued Garcia.

The AWS new Two-Week, In-Person Seminar Package includes instruction by credentialed CWIs and CWEs (Certified Welding Educators) early receipt of code book, tools and study materials, and daily lunch.

FEATURE BENEFIT! FREE ACCESS (A $750 value!) to the Online CWI Pre-Seminar.  Upon registration for either of the two sessions below, you will receive free access to the AWS Online CWI Pre-Seminar. This self-paced online program is designed to help you learn or brush up on fundamental concepts before your live, instructor-led training. With 80 hours of engaging, multimedia course work, the Pre-Seminar covers a wide array of topics in a modular, self-study format:

Two seminar/exam sessions have been scheduled and are accepting applicants:

    FRESNO, CA | SEPTEMBER:  Seminar: September 27 – October 8, 2021 | Exam: October 9 | Application Deadline: September 13 | Location: Ironworkers Training Center - 1380 S. Channing Way - Fresno, CA 93706

    MIAMI, FL | DECEMBER: Seminar: December 6 – 17, 2021 | Exam: December 18 | Application Deadline: November 22 | Location: American Welding Society Headquarters - 8669 NW 36 Street - Miami, FL 33166

In many ways, Certified Welding Inspectors have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Failing to properly inspect and qualify welds can jeopardize the integrity of the building, vehicle, appliance, or other product being manufactured. It’s vital that their knowledge, skill and ability to inspect weldments, solve problems and determine remedial action has been verified through AWS exam certification and preparation. Now, CWI candidates have a new, comprehensive and affordable way to get in-person instruction through AWS.

  • Resistance welding is one of the most robust, proven and simple of the various welding processes, and is used primarily in the manufacture of automobiles, appliances, wire products, sheet metal products, and more. It is a competitive, high-production industry, using costly and valuable equipment operated by skilled technicians and engineers.

The American Welding Society’s newest certification credential, the Certified Resistance Welding Technician (CRWT) Co-developed by the American Welding Society and Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA), provides a benchmark to evaluate resistance welding personnel and separates the qualified from the untested. All staffing levels who work daily in resistance welding - engineers, technicians, skilled tradesmen, quality control managers, supervisors and more - can benefit from becoming CRWT certified.

The CRWT exam tests the candidate’s knowledge, skills and abilities in conducting the setup, operation, maintenance, testing and quality control of resistance welding equipment. To help prepare CRWT candidates prepare prior to taking the exam, AWS now has a week-long online, instructor-led seminar, with two sessions being offered in March and July. The first online session starts March 16-24; the second is July 19-28. Both sessions are accepting registrants.

“Until now, the only real measuring stick for employers to gauge an individual’s knowledge of the resistance welding process was to ask if they had taken the RWMA welding course,” Don DeCorte, Vice President, RoMan Manufacturing, Inc. explains. “The fact that it will be managed and maintained in the same way that all AWS certifications are managed will allow employers to know before they hire someone that they have a specific working knowledge of the process. This is win/win for both employer and employee.”

When employers hire CRWTs - or have existing personnel certified – they reinforce their organization’s commitment to quality by retaining skilled personnel who have the knowledge and experience to operate and maintain equipment, improve product quality, increase productivity, reduce fabrication costs, and positively impact the bottom line. Well-trained resistance welding operators, technicians and engineers with the CRWT credential can have created a viable path toward a rewarding and lucrative career in the resistance welding industry.
